    Steve,
I asked Bill what year Bolt, is it a brand new one? That will make a difference as EV's like their ICE counterparts are constantly improving. I don't know a lot about the new Bolt, but I would want to know what kind of HVAC system it uses. Is it a conventional electric heater, like a toaster, or is it a heat pump? Heat pumps are a lot more efficient. As far as A/C vs. heat is concerned, maybe it takes less energy to lower temperatures from say 95* to 72*, than it takes to increase temperatures from 30* to 72*, especially with a heat pump?

I think Bill has a great opportunity here. I know he probably isn't a big fan of EVs. I for one would like his honest real world experience, good or bad.

The amount of electrical energy to turn the compressor for the AC is substantial, assuming it's a conventional AC system and they have not engineered some type of work around for the power robbing compressor.. think about what it does to the mileage on a ICE vehicle, to run the air..

I would as it's as least a much juice to run the AC as the heat, if both systems are conventional, with the Heat using elements for the heat source. The batteries give off heat, but I think that is mainly when charging.. so not sure there is any source on an EV for any time of heat pump system.

But, I will admit to be completely uniformed on what exactly the Bolt has for systems.. because I could really care less... Where I live, any type of EV is totally impractical.

    Topcat Got TORQUE?

Yes Bruce....at the Rose.....i been there a few times :)

Read a lot on the Bolt owners forum last night.

Here is something i found out.....there is a battery conditioning system.....it cools the battery when it is charging or when the car is being driven and it is hot outside......or when it is parked over a 100 degree parking lot of which the Bolt will be sitting on for several hours....that takes power while you are not even using the car.
Since it will be close to two in the morning when we get home and i am sure there are not a lot of "fast" charging stations in rural indiana if we need one...i am leaning on taking the Sonic.

As Larry said....i would love to make the trip in the Bolt and give you all my real world evaluation of the car......under the circumstances, this might not be the trip for that.....

    Peace WildBill

Electric cars just aren’t practical when you have to dissect each and every trip that may require recharging

I’m sorry, I disagree. I think I will be dead before I have to eat those kind of words. I do like string beans, asparagus, peas, carrots, and all the other vegetables. I think electric cars are useless.

That's OK John, no need to be sorry. It's coming, and no amount of Poo-Pooing EVs will prevent that.

I don’t think electric cars are useless; I think we’re close to having tech good enough for them to be useful for a lot of daily commuting (for people who can afford them and a garage or regular place to charge). I see them being like battery powered tools. My wife’s Dewalt chainsaw is great for little and medium stuff around the house and it’s ready to go with a click in of a battery; no mixing fuel and tugging until a blister forms just to trim a few trees. No, I wouldn’t try to fell fifty acres of trees with it and it’ll be a long time (if ever) before a battery saw can be a lumberjack’s all day saw. Same with cars-I could see using a cheap (used) one like a Volt, Bolt or Leaf for the 10 miles to town and back to drop off a kid or run to the store while having a nice, ICE vehicle that seats six to nine, holds luggage and debris and can tow for longer trips.
The driving future won’t be 100% electric ANY time soon (no matter how bad some in politics want it) but it could be 50-75% for some people very soon.

That said, I don’t like electric cars, they’re soulless appliances. But they’re fine for soulless tasks.

Agreed. And as far as affordability goes, I think that will go the way of most new products. Remember monster TVs when they first came out? Now anybody can afford one.

It's impressive this thread has morphed into the newly classic EV rant fest.. anything new to report besides more EVs are selling and the world is still turning?

Looks like they are redesigning vehicles so they need less chips. That should be helpful.

"GM still expects to increase production this year by 25-30%, despite continuing pressure on semiconductor supplies globally. Barra said GM is working to redesign vehicles to reduce the number of processors required by 95%."

I live a few miles from a coal fired power plant. Today it was 99* with 76* dew point and almost 70% humidity. My electricity went out earlier due to high demand from everyone running their AC. At the same time they want everyone to switch to electric heat, cook tops, cars etc etc. Don’t have the capacity to power what we have now. Clown world…

That's my rub with this whole thing. If you are building a new house do you tear the old one down before it is complete? Yes, build the new, but keep the old till your new is up and running. The other part they miss is that a lot of fossil fuel is used for plastic as well as making fertilizer. Do you think there will be rolling black outs in Washington DC this summer?

    No. to last question.

now my wife tells me that there is a charging station at the auto dealers so if you do use the electric car to make the trip you should be able to go to the dealer to get the car charged back up right?
I would take the electric car and give a full report good or bad, the only way to find out is to do it.

it ought to be interesting today as it will hit 95 in the NE so will the electric grid hold up? probably not the infrastructure has not been fixed yet. Who takes their car out without being finished? and I don't mean no paint.

Just think, it will be a thousands of electric cars sitting at the lot pretty soon.
We are jumping off a cliff
