Do you have light beer with ght or not??? :laugh: :laugh: I prefer non light beer, but sometimes all I can find is beer with ght. :laugh: Actually I've been finding a few containers of Rotella T under the old CI-4 specification still in the stores, and when I do I buy them. :TU: When that's all gone I'll stay with Rotella T and just use GM EOS. Interesting, the oil consumption on my 95 Riviera went way down after the switch to Rotella T. :idea2:
Im with Dale too! Ive been using Quaker State 10w-30 oil in all my cars for as long as I can remember (when you needed a can opener to do an oil change) I havent had any problems with any engine. Even the solid cammed 71, which by the way had been together for at least 10 years I'll worry about all this when I build my new 494 stage 2:Brow:
Anyone running the new Ultra Low Sulfur diesel might want to start using the new diesel oils in their trucks. This week a Ford rep told me about the new fuel breaking down regular oil. Ford has their own oil for the new fuel according to him. Also, my local parts supplier has the new labeled Rotella which is safe for the new fuel too. Also, Tennesse doesn't require a Cetane rating to be posted on the pumps so we have a low rating. They told me not to use lower than a 45 rating in the new F-450. They told me to run Cetane booster in the tank for now with each fill up. We've been using Low Sulfur thinking we were using Ultra Low Sulfur in the new truck and it caused problems this week. The scanner showed the fuel being the problem. I called the station and they verified that they sell old fuel. Anyway it's an akward time to own a Diesel truck!
I stopped out at Fleet Farm last night, and while all they had for Rotella was the new CJ-4 formula, they had a ton of Resolute brand diesel oil. The 15-40 is CI-4, and 10-30 is CH-4. Bought a 5 gallon pail of the 10-30 CH-4 for $36.00.
i emailed castrol oil company concerning whether or not castrol gtx still contained any zinc additive. here is the reply: "GTX 10w 40 does still have the zinc additive in it but it has been reduced. If you do have concerns regarding flat tappets we do have a product , Castrol 20w-50 Classic Car Formulation with ZDDP levels of 1200 PPM " i am not about to use 20w50, way too heavy. that grade is what is used in the 60s, 70's jaguars. i replied and asked for the quantity of zinc still remaining in the oil. will let u guys know their response. Man, with how some of you guys have muddied the waters in this thread:laugh: my head is still spinning. Can you tell I don't like beating around the bush:rant: The response that seems clearest regarding the older street machinery was that made by JW himself saying he uses 10w-30 Rotella.
I've been having a hard time finding Rotella 10/30 lately-plenty of 15/40 around that I don't want. I got some of the syntheic 5/40 (new design container) that I use in a turbo car-when I got home the spec was the same as last years 'old container' except something about "Not suitable for 2007 diesel engines" -what's with that!?!
The new formula has reduced zinc courtesy of the EPA since even the new diesels will have catalytic converters now and the EPA believes the zinc in the oil blow by going out the exhaust will contaminate the catalyst in the catalytic converters thus rendering them ineffective. I find Rotella 10W30 at Rural King store, about the same as Tractor Supply or any farm type supply store. I'm gonna continue to use it in the Skylark with a bottle of ZDDPlus thrown it for good measure. I run Valvoline durablend 10W30 in the Turbo car and it's getting ZDDPlus this year too since I'm all out of GM EOS. Who'ed think this tread would last this long. :eek2:
i was born & raised on the farm and we had diesel ford tractors from 1961 onward. since we purchased fuel & gasoline from white rose, then shell oil, rotella/rotella t were the oils of choice and we purchased them by the case. i in used it in my 70 chevelle 350.
Some bad info has been posted and needs to be cleared up as to not confused or mislead people. I'm too new to post links, so head over to highperformancepontiac.com and check out the story called Juggling the Truth About Today's Oil-Engine Oil Tech. Lots of very good, oil expert confirmed information in that article in regards to ZDDP and which oils/additives contain it. In a nutshell, there's nothing wrong with using Diesel oil and the level of ZDDP in it is still very, very high in comparison to gasoline oils.:beer
