Which Ram Air System Would Work Better ?

Good idea... I was thinking of running it through the headlights as long as I can get enough flow. I think two 4" pipes should be lots. I've noticed some fuel boil with my engine. (I know its a small block and this is the big block section, but same principles). I bought a 1" phenolic spacer and I'm blocking the exhaust x-over on the intake. Hoping to get a bit more cool air to the engine.

Having a similar setup on my Bird I run it year round with no problems, rain snow or shine.

Larry, I really like your set up. If you don't mind me asking, where did you get all your materials for your complete installation? Does your ramair box clear your stock hood without any problems? Thanks, John Biggs.

Yeah I was interested to see how you are grabbing your air below, any pictures of the bumper setup? :bglasses:

Yes the ducting runs below the core support, the box and scoops are fabricated out of aluminum, hoses are early corvette fresh air (under hood) ducting, filter is K&N, duct clamps are quick release type for fast service, or ice on manifold between runs, clears hood, will take pictures of scoop and box over the weekend and post as soon as I can. I designed the setup, mocked it in cardboard and had my friend Ken Imhoff www.kiengineering.com, build it out of aluminum.

Are you going to Bowling Green? If so come by to see what I am doing.

If, you are willing to cut both your headlight buckets and radiator core support and your battery is/will be relocated to the trunk... then......: I suggest using the Spectre headlight trumpet and wire cover, then purchased the aluminum dryer vent pipe, 4" diameter. This works great and you can shape it, since it is semi rigid. I am fabricating two sets of parts to make two systems, it attaches to your existing breather and goes to each high beam location. This eliminates any hood clearance issues. I'd be willing to sell the extra one to you after you see the setup (thus the question about BG) if you are interested. I do not know my final cost yet, I should know by Monday. Here's a couple of shots of the progress.

Remember, I do not have the breather additions complete or installed yet...work in progress.

I actually have been thinking of making them, and if I did they would be more fine detailed. I just have to talk it over with Ken Imhoff, I think he may be interested as he is currently unemployed. Here is a few photos I took of the air intake set-up. Sorry about the scuffed paint, they've been lerking in my shop storage rafters for quite some time now. I think I should have them powder coated, Classic Coatings is right here in Wisconsin, they do alot of powder for Harley-Davidson-Buell. Larry

Larry,That is the coolest ram air set-up I have ever seen on a GS. Thank you fo sharing those pictures, I want to build one like that for my 70 GS.

Craig, set up looks great !!! :TU: What intake manifold are you using ? How's your hood clearance with everything ? Spectre headlight trumpet ? Pardon my ignorance, are these from another car ? John B.

I'm using the SP-1 with a 1/2" spacer and drop base (maybe 1.5"). The breather is a 14" open breather that I was already using. The filter is about 2.8" tall I think. The housing I fabricated is installed around my standard breather to keep hood clearances to a minimum. It will reduce the hood clearance slightly, maybe .100". Here's an updated picture. I still have most of the fabricated pieces to make one more if you are interested. Did you make it to Bowling Green, and...are you going to the BPG?

Didn't make it to Bowling Green and won't be at BPG, however ....if you were to fabricate another one ( at your convinence ) I'd be very interested in it as I'm also using an SP1. Would it be something that could be shipped easily ? John Biggs.

Gents, every car is different......I'm running a rich jetted 750 QJet with a four hole wood spacer and the stock GS hood. In May I fabricated a dual hose cold air ram around the radiator to the grille, using 4" hose. Was very dissapointed with the resulting throttle response and the engine took longer to reach redline. Put the air cleaner back to the stock GS hood and got my response and crisp rpm back. Too much hose in my opinion.......but, every car is different. And, as we stand there in the garage with the hood open, asking ourselves "what else can we do to go faster?" you won't know till you try.

    Have fun.

If you do not open up your headlight buckets to at least 4" you will not reach the full potential. If you do not modify them at all you will likely loose power like above. Now I know not everyone will want to cut their car, but it looks nice once it's finished. The other good thing is the path is very non treacherous, compared to routing under the radiator core support, but lets be honest the biggest benefit is the colder outside air (vs. ram air).
