In another thread I posted I listed my winter "Buick To-Do List". So what do you have planned for your ride this winter???o No:
couple of posi projects for me Posi rear upgrades for both of my Buicks! I have a 8.2 Buick 10 bolt (thanks Steve David!) and purchased a 2.93 posi carrier with gears (thanks Delerious!). I'll clean and finish the rear and farm out the install/ set up to a qualified specialist. After that, I'll have a 72 Olds 8.5 rear with 3.08 open rear end for sale which is currently in the GS and working nicely for a peg leg. As for as the TR, I'll need to locate and purchase a 8.5 GM Posi Carrier for 28 spline axles and will be able to use the 3.42's in the open rear I'm now running which came stock. If anyone has a GM 8.5 posi carrier for sale at a reasonable price, I will soon be in the market to buy one. Those ought to keep me busy for the winter. May also have the timing chain replaced on the TR too once the GS is very road worthy.
Well, without heat in the garage, my options are limited, but I was thinking about bringing in the 15" rims and doing some chrome polishing in the house. I haven't decided yet if I will do the 14 to 15 upgrade next spring, or wait another year. I really do have enough tread on the 14's to go another summer. o No:
Lessee... Get the car, spend time sanding it and making it straight for paint, have friend come over and teach me to paint it. Reassemble it, get the 455 set up to run low 13's/high 12's, install that, get a TH400 rebuilt and a mild convertor, assemble drivetrain. Hopefully that can all happen by the spring and be ready to hit the track with it.
Where do I start? I need to install a new fuel tank and sending unit, install new convertible top, new wiring harnesses, get my dash back in, motor and tranny in and shifter set up and adjusted. I also need to put in my new upholstery and carpet and door panels, new exhaust and restore my grille and put the bumpers back on. OK I have what, five months till April? :ball: Wish me Luck
Winter blues I plan on pulling my engine to find out why it is making such a terrible noise. Probably wrist pins, so I will upgrade to new pistons/pins, have the rods resized and see what machine work needs to be done. If I can get it all put back together, I plan on a new convertible top and interior carpet...maybe some electric exhaust cut outs... ...and oh yeah...I need to seal my rims too!:Brow:
Dump my noisy holley blue pump and replace it with Tri-Shields new billet mechanical pump. I have it already, I need to figure out how I'm going to plumb it. I currently have -8 stainless line from the tank running to a regulator on the passenger side at the rear base of the inner wheel housing. I then have 2 -6 lines running to the carb. I think I might replumb the whole thing with that Earls black braided line, running the line up the drivers side. I can't wait to hear only the engine, not that Holley blue pump whine!
I think you're ahead of me, Chris! I just last week got my GS totally disassembled, and have decided to put new rear quarters on before I take the body off the frame! Then it's strip, blast, clean, paint, re-wire, new top, new windshield, new carpet, upholstery, run lines, new tranny and engine built by Tri-Shield Performance :Brow: , new tires for my new 15x7's......you get the idea! Got to have it ready by the BPG Nats, but I'm hoping maybe a little sooner so I can enjoy it a bit over the summer!
Well I just bought this Buick, waiting for it to get here, cleaned up the garage, sold the Camaro, bought a new 360 watt, system today so I can jam while I work, hoping it just needs taken down, cleaned up, fix somethings, and paint, heres the thread. http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=28849 can't wait to see it :Brow:
My car is already getting a winter treatment....new upholstery!!! WOO HOO!!! Many pics to come:grin: Possible cam upgrade - if I feel crazy enough More detailing of small parts - this car needs a cleaning with a fine tooth comb. Lots of dirt I still haven't seen. Should be a good time next year!
Winter?????? What's that????? I do think my local race series takes January off, so I guess that's what y'all are talking about. uzzled: I'm upgrading from 3.55 8.2 to 3.42 8.5, but hope to have that done before the December race.
Won't get to the Buick until spring. Currently doing 65 Musatng. Cleaning and painting engine bay, rebuilding steering system (Ford power steeting SUCKS) put in new HIPO exhaust, detail and paint motor reinstall motor and tranny. Buick, have the a-piller joint repaire. Pull old motor and tranny, detail engine pay. Then put in the new motor with PAE SP 1400-3000. New motor: 70 stage 1, KB pistons, cleaned up heads with new vavles, TA 413, rhodes lifters, TA roller rockers, clean up the fuel system to make sure there is enough fuel for it. Will start out with Postons S-divider and 800 qjet because I know it works. Also Dave Ray ignition. Think it will go 12's?
I'm planning to pull my motor and replace it with a Trishield motor. I also plan to do a complete engine compartment detail while it's out. Be prepared for LOTS of questions... ou:
Ken's core... Welp, since Ken decided to put his original motor in storage, and wanted us to put together one for him, we started looking for a suitable core.. His orginal motor was an early 71 block, with "738" as the last three casting numbers, and it certainly is nice to at least put the correct casting number block back in the car, even if it is just a "play" motor. Unfortuantly, I was fresh out of "738" blocks, and am always concerned with using that number, since the '70 block is the one which can have the most core shift in it. I have seen these things with paper thin lifter bores.. A day after I had spoken with Ken on his project, a local Buick guy and friend of Mine, Greg Johnson, call and asked if I was interested in a good '70 core shortblock.. Now there is good timing for 'ya.. He dropped it off, and I was out of the shop when he was here, but Mike looked at it... and when I got back, he told me Greg dropped off the shortblock for Ken's motor, but it couild not be the right year.. it looks way too " beefy ".. I had to tend to agree, looking at the lifter bores, and the deck surfaces.. seemed almost like a '76 block.. But scraping the gook off the rear of the block, exposed the correct "738" number we were after.. One of the nicest '70-early 71 blocks I have ever seen.. I think we can make something nice out of this iron..
Nice crank snout.... love to see that.. Also of note, is the fact that "70" is not cast into the front of this block, in the recess above the cam, like it is on a lot of blocks, regardless of if they are this casting number or not.. Leads me to believe that this block came out of a different mold, than others that I have seen of this number.. first time I can recall the number not being there, on 738 block..
Why isn't there a smiley for salivating??? o No:  Jim, I'm excited to hear that you not only found a correct casting number core, but that it's also a beefy one without major core shift issues! Awesome! I'm really excited to get this project going. I'm *almost* as excited as Yardley! The plan is starting to come together and I'll be getting things ready for the day the old one comes out. I'm starting today by working on getting the garage cleaned. Edit: Just updated my avatar. :Brow:
I'm going to be installing an 8-track player, map light mirror, and any other little goodies that I've managed to accumulate over the last year or so. Oh yeah, a passenger side mirror.
My winter projects ,now that I have replaced the 455 in my 72 GS, consist of changing the rack and pinion steering in my 37 Buick coupe (street rod) , and replacing the front brakes on my 40 Super with Roadmaster units. The 40 has 1 3/4 X12 brake shoes and the Roadmaster has 2 1/4 X12,so it may help the stopping considerably. :beer :beer :beer
I'm gonna have my new fiberglass doors and fenders mounted and have the whole car stripped and painted. It's been eight rough years since it was painted. It wasn't very nice the day it was done....And it ain't been gettin' any better lately! ou: The crack in the bondo in the left quarterpanel, which I first noticed in Bowling Green, has become a hole! I think this is gonna cost me!!
