So, Got the timing cover off and found that the chain has 3/8" play to it . The inside of the cover has light scarring as well. New chain and gears are on car, gasket set arrives tomorrow, so will put er back together then and update everyone. Thanks again!
After looking at the fuel pump lever on the pump I just installed last Friday, I think there is some play in the camshaft. Possible cam bearings?? Why would the fuel pump lever have these scars on it. I thought they were supposed to be very smooth?? This is fuel pump I replaced last Friday. This is pump that has maybe 3 minutes of run time on it. Why would the new one be so scarred?
@TrunkMonkey here is a vid of it. I do not have same setup as the photo there. https://photos.app.goo.gl/Z8v1DYBuS22guvF56
Yeah. That was just to show the eccentric. (then I looked up and saw the images of yours.) Looking at the timing gear, things look "dry". The eccentric wear looks new and shiny, but that could also be due to normal wear. I would expect everything should be "wet" with oil. But it is hard to tell with cell phone images sometimes.
I cleaned everything really well before placing the new gearset and chain in place. Below is a pic of the set when cover first came off.
The amount of grey material concerns me. I have seen sludge, but when it looks like molybdenum coating everything, that is typically fine metal. I suspect lubrication issues, but, it is so danged hard to diagnose from a few pics. If I were there, I'd be poking a flashlight and mirror in places, and pulling things apart to look, including the oil and filter. When did you last change the oil? What did it look like, and what does the current oil look like (unless you drained it and cannot inspect it) How long have you been running the engine before the noise started, and how long after it started? I realize you changed the fuel pump that had about 3,000 miles on it, and this one only a short time, but that much wear in 3 minutes is not normal.
I changed the oil last Friday, and opened the filter. There was no shiny stuff in the filter at all. Also, the drain plug didn't have any significant metal on it. The noise started last Thursday, and the engine has been run probably 10 minutes total since then. I have 40 lb oil pressure, and good compression in a 8 cylinders. This is beginning to really stump me, lol.
All, I removed passenger side rocker shaft first, nothing wrong at all. Video below. https://photos.app.goo.gl/M9xB3jgZ3Y7UqeQP9 Then I pulled drivers side and #6 cylinder both push rods are in poor condition. See photos and video below. Please let me know what y'all think is next step. Thank you all again! https://photos.app.goo.gl/Vw4x4yzPJT5qGny47
Hanging it up for the night fellers. Have to go into office tomorrow, but work from home Thu and Fri, so will dig deeper then.
