if you build it right even with 73 & newer stock rods and pistons, turning 6k is once in a while. next step is to get rid of the cast pistons and go to at least hyper's. they will go to 7500. we did it all the time. new setup has 283 forged pistons and nascar rods w/1.88 rod bearing. rpm's are not a problem.
i have to build the engine to be like a nascar engine. the driver likes to do laps with. he does it with the dragster too.

Sorry guys, a little behind on this thread,... Johnny thanks for the reply,..

*** Johnny, its good to know somebody know's how to build a high reving SBB,... I have x-tra blocks that might aquire your knowledge... thanks..!
My goal here is to build around the stock short block keeping things low budget even though I have aquried some good parts to do this. I'm still not sure how the straight cut duration 310 cam will work with this combo, but will see., I traded a small sbb cam for this cam,.. I will play with some timing seeing how the low 9-8 or 10-1 comp. will hinder it some, maybe 34* to 38*.. shifting at 5500 RPM..
I'm hoping the other parts I've listed in the above posts will help me squeeze out the 375 hp Im looking for, although my desk top dyno is telling me 390 hp to 410 hp at 5000 RPM,... and the torque was 500 ft. lbs starting at 3000 rpm..I think the rpm is a little low for this hp and torque is questionable...

Back to the winter project... Brrrrr... 9* in michigan right now,...Baby its cold outside...

    Comments are still accepted...

    J.Staged My Therapy...!!

I was asked to bring this thread back up to let everybody know where were at on the buick 350 / 310 cam build,..Stock short blk. 70" 350 2bbl. motor...

So we just put the motor/ trans and rear axle in 2 1/2 weeks ago, we missed the fall high school nationals by a day because of a used 750 holley issue and fuel pressure problems during break in,..the car would have never made a good pass down the track...

If you have read the thread up until now most everything was done except a few things and some info is still guess-temated,...

The mechanical fuel pump was traded for a elec. 140 black holley look a like pump mounted right at the fuel tank with 6" line off the sending unit going into the stock line then 3/8 line from the frt outlet line to the fuel regulator to now my 850 holley re-jetted and with big shooters 36/38 4 hole wood spacer on top of ported t/a intake and loves it as long as the fuel pressure stays up,... thats still my problem,.
_ Fuel pressure still falls off setting in the driveway idling at 950 rpm..from 8.5 lbs to 6 lbs within 10 mins..and then I look and its at 4 lbs,.. pulled the tank and it was like brand new inside and the sock was good , but cut sock off anyway,.. and I still have the same problem..
_ Went for some back road test runs and the car felt really good, trying too get use to the loose 3500 TCI conv... Considering fuel pressure,.. If I load the conv. at 2000 rpm and stand on it,.it blows the drag radials off up through 2nd gear and shift into 3rd and varys from there on the pull and fuel pressure.. Had one good pass shifting at 5800 and the motor felt great,.. temp was 50+ degrees out... Still thinking a 13:20 to 13:50 pass maybe near 100 mph..

    SPECS and tid-bits..
-This is still a stock 70" 350 2bbl short blk. checked rod bearings then retorqed rods 5 lbs xtra..
    - Found out heads were cut .030 guessing 52-53 cc, did not cc heads... I did smooth out the chambers..
-Compression maybe 9.4 0r 9.5 -1, using .020 head gaskets retorqed twice... ARP head studs,
    - did not use small crank shaft pulley due to alignment problems, all stock pulleys.
-Stock oil pump with t/a adj. regulator. set at 80 lbs start up drops to 25 lbs at 950 rpm... SAE 30 wt. oil with ZDDP..about 40 miles on break in..
    - Timing set at 32* all in at 2200rpm, intial is at 14*-16*... MSD 6al, HEI
    - TCI 3500 conv. and 8.2 axle replaced with 8.5 axle 3:73 gearing, and shift kit in the stock 350 trans...
    - AC box still on firewall all other ac componets removed and saved..full interior car ,and removed carpet and deadner..
    - Using cherry bomb header mufflers, because they were laying in the garage on short notice for break in and left them on for now,..still deciding on 2 1/2" or 3" exhaust to dump at the rearaxle...Will track test with the cherry bombs...:Brow:

-- Now, Im going to use a -8 braided line from the elec. fuel pump to the reg. to carb and see if that fixes the fuel problem or it maybe the new fuel pump...:Do No:
-Everything else said in the earlier post stayed the same...

__ We will try to get some time slips Wed. at Milan Dragway if the weather holds up,.. temps are staying in the 50"s.. Hopefully everything go's well, my son will be driving...:TU:

    Stay tuned... thanks jerrold,..

Check your alternator, my buddy had a regulator that was intermittent and it cause the fuel pressure to change.

    Good idea..

If it is not the above then I would guess the fuel pump might be overheating the fuel due to mostly re-circulating of fuel at idle. Try raising the fuel level and see if that solves it.

Plumb with metal lines or braided to the carb. The rubber hose will cause a pressure drop.

Well,.. changed fuel line to -8 braided line today,. pressure started at 8 lbs then dropped to 6 1/2 while sitting idling at 950 rpm within ten mins.

Tried to go for a test pass ( back roads) holding 6 1/2 lbs. but started spitting rain and spun the tires quick to 6 grand going into 2nd gear,..unsafe, aborted testing went back home,..
The car did feel snappier, but pressure still not holding at 8 lbs... checked pressure when I got home still at 6 1/2 lbs..but still might be dropping at full throttle.

-Rob,.. great idea about the alternater, its the original and the battery has been losing its charge after a couple days..could be both causing the problem..I hope..

-Wayne...I"ve been running the elec. pump thru. the factory steel line and braided line to the carb.., but thanks for the suggestion..

Still shooting for time slips on Wednesday, but calling for rain..

    Thanks for the comments.. jerrold

What brand fuel pressure regulator are you using?

    J.Staged My Therapy...!!

Sean, its the basic holley reg. that I got with one of my holley blue pumps,.. this is the 2nd one I"ve switched out since last week.

I also have one of those steel 3/8 pot belly fuel filters about 26" before the regulator, I dont think it could be the problem,..just might be the alternater..

Yes if you suspect low voltage to the fuel pump just check the voltage at the pump using a volt meter.

    J.Staged My Therapy...!!

Sean, how much voltage should I be looking for,.. about 12.8 at idle...

When setting up an SX Performance pump I used a relay with 10 gauge wire. Runs a constant 13.8 volts at the back bumper. Not sure why you run 8 psi. I always thought 6 to 7 psi was good. Run my blown motor with 6.5 psi initial and never have a fuel problem.

The main thing is consistency not really the voltage number as much... Just be sure it does flucuate.

You really need to see what voltage is at the pump AND at the battery. I'd hope for a 1/2 volt drop at the bump or better. If bigger, look at wire size and quality of your grounds etc.

---------- Post added at 09:41 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:37 PM ----------

12.8 is what a good battery should read fully charged and engine off. Running with a good working charging system 13.1-13.6 or so. But as Sean said it does need to fluctuate to ensure the system is regulating.

-Doug, I used 12 ga. wire and did not put my relay in yet,..I was losing patience that day and trying to teach my son about using elec. pumps and etc..:Smarty:... and if Im pushing fuel thru the stock lines I"ve always set the fuel pressure at 8 lbs. cause of all the bends the fuel go's thru... but now will back down to 7 maybe 7 1/2 with the -8 line...:

Sean,. thanks for the info.. - still more to do.

    Rob,. thanks for the info,..

    thanks,.. jerrold

Good move on the -8. 12 gauge wire should be fine especially when you get it on a relay. It always gets back to the basics.

Went out and played with sons buick today,.. Couple buddies came over and watched the fuel gauge on start up and it was showing 12 lbs all of a sudden with no flooding problems,..
Now we think the gauge could be bad, but the pressure did drop down to 7 lbs after 15 mins of warm up time...

So we go for a ride,. 3 guys knocking on 200+ lbs a piece in the car,.. so I say, auh!! were not going to set any records here fellas,..lol.
    - The car is now warmed up to 160, car feels snappy and they like it..Get to my favorite test road and do a slow craw at 2000 rpm and stand on it,..it bites hard, picks the front end up and hauls butt to the top of 3rd gear without a whimper...
_ Peanut gallery;.. friend:: This thing runs better than my 383- 55 chevy,.. friend:: I cant believe this 850 holley never bogged, coughed,.. its johnny on the spot..
-Next run-- stop and load the conv.. to 2000 rpm, stand on it, pulls the left frt fender up hard, pushing the car to the right with 10 feet of rubber down and digging, straight thru 2nd and 3rd gears too the 5600 rpm mark without missing a beat,.. Friends;.. WOW,. this thing hauls, can't believe its a stock block... Me .. smiling big, good runs..
-Get back home check FP its at 5 1/2 - 6 lbs not happy,..did not ck voltage all day, just grabbed my good 64 amp alt, put it on and the pressure jumped to 7 1/2 lbs... thanks Rob.

-Took the car for a short run by myself and it felt real strong, blowing the tires off up thru 2nd gear, ..7 lbs pressure when I got home,.. real happy now..
_ trying not to tear it up before Wednesday,.. Tomro teaching son to get use to his car... he's driven my car on the street so this should be easy,..
_ Lets hope everything goes well for Wednesday at the track... with good time slips..

    thanks,.. jerrold & chandler

Sweet! Glad you got it running good for the last Wendsday test and tune! FYI you may get your cam(s) delivered the same day.

The guy finally called me yesterday, and said he would be in Ohio "maybe wendsday" but will try to give me a 24 hour notice when he'll be there.:TU:
