That guy is so clueless, he is barely worth repsonding to. He's the guy who writes the Bat Boy and Swamp Monster articles for the Star, right?

Quote: "Then in 1968, things got worse with the addition of the first emission controls retarded ignition, leaned-out carburetion, air pumps. When you punched the throttle down on the street, the Hemi coughed, sputtered and choked. Literally."

If he knew anything at all, he would know that Hemis did not get air pumps or smog equipment. And when you stomp on the gas, they go like crazey, not cough and sputter.

If Hemis were such slow worthless junk, then why is it the goal of so many brand X racers to beat a Hemi. Why is there a "Hemi Killer" cam? Does the Buick faithfull have such low standards that they can only aspire to beat the lowly, coughing sputtering, falling apart as it goes down the road Hemi? :Do No:

When I was just 20 years old in the mid sixties, I was in awe of Hemis-440 6pacs-409s-421SDs-427/435s-442/w-30s-LS6s-L88s-Fuelies-406s-429s-427 Cobras-etc-etc-etc-etc.

Having bought a NEW 1987 Buick Grand National and souping it up over the years and being into the street race scene for longer than I care to remember, I have over those years had the opportunity to go up against every one of the Muscle Cars mentioned above with all the upgrades they have available to them......................and I am proud to say to each one of those High Dollar Big Inch, chest puffed up owners...............
YOUR ASS HAS BEEN KICKED BY A V-6 !!!!!!!!!!!

My little V-6 now has to contend with not the ricers (I won't waste my gas on them)............Now I play with the Exotics !!!!!!

We have some heavy hitters on Long Island and it's so much fun to blow the doors off some dude who's been holding court all nite at the local cruise meet with his Ferrari or brand new Viper..............

My best kill to date was, and LARRY70GS was riding shotgun for this, when we blew the doors off a 1997 Porshce All Wheel Drive Twin Turbo "S" that's rated at 485hp. The poor guy could't believe his $185,000 car got beat by a lowley Regal.

Say what you want about all the cars past and present..............as far as I'm concerned..................BUICKS RULE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Woh slow down

You guys are gettin a little rough.

Staged67gspwr, I can think of more than a few things the General has screwed up over the years. Its not just Chrysler that had\has poor quality control.I do agree these cars are bringing more than they are worth.Makes it hard for me to buy more.

Tufbuick, While I respect your position that a GN makes a wicked street car you need to remember that you are not naturally aspirated. All things being equal your 3.8 would be a speck in a rear veiw mirror of any of the muscle cars mentioned. You couldn't possibly think a fuel injected hemi with a big turbo would fall short to a buick v6.

    Hemikillerstg1, That is funny

My brother has 4 Challengers. Buddy had a Barracuda and another had a 70 GTX wich eventually I owned and sold for $500 in 2001. Needed too much work. A buddy & I did a 340 for a his 79 Aspen a few years ago. It runs like million dollars. I know first hand about the Slant 6s, 318s, 340s, 383s & 440s. They all have good R/S ratios. :TU: They are all good running engines with good oiling systems. First engine I rebuilt was a 440 wich I still have. The 8 3/4 rearend is a good one. Their electronic ignition boxes leave something to be desired. Never played with a HEMI. :Do No: I have some 70s car mags that say they were really hard on spark plugs. From what I've read when used with a blower the hemispherical chamber cranks out more power than a wedge head. Perhaps this is why they are used for Top Fuel. I still like Buick though. It's different. More of a luxury car. I think a better engineered suspension. Finding parts is a pain sometimes but for the most part it is all good. Every brand has it's shortfalls.

He**!!! Up until the Germans bought the PentaStar, Dodge could not make a body or interior to save their lives.... :Dou: But...their engines go like snott... Thats why I WILL not buy a Dodge product.

    Tom,

I'm a little surprised. I've never seen such Mopar bashing around here. :Do No:

    That's well said mate !

That V6 may be quick on a short distance, but take it to a country where real speed is allowed, and try to race that Porsche again in a race over 100 miles.
Meet the real big daddy !!

And if that Porsche get's modified just like your Buick, you will even see his brake lights in what you consider to be a race: from traffic light to traffic light.... :spank:

Hmmm I don't think the guy was so clueless myself. I personally only had a 73 cuda with a 340. I really liked the interior setup (had a cockpit kind of feel like the old rivieras and Grandprixs). Obviously by 73 the 340 was not the most powerful motor but the ignition system really sucked and so did the wiring....guess it could have been age. It was fun to work the posi but it wasn't beating any of the regular racers around town. I contemplated putting a small block chevy in it because the motor and trans was just not that stellar IMO. I really loved the look and interior but eventually abandoned a transplant swap and just traded it for a GT-37 4gear that needed a motor.

I also don't think the author of that article was saying the hemi's were slow just not practical for street driving because they were poised more for Hardcore racing. He makes perfect logic in that the rarity of the car acts as evidence to support its lack of popularity. Lets face it, Crappy cars either sell big because they are cheap (Aries K, Horizon, Escort, chevette anyone?) or don't sell hardly at all because they are Super Kraptastic for a number of reasons YUGO anyone?

Obviously I am no MOPAR fan but I like the way the old mopars look and while I may be a little biased, there has to be logic behind why HEmi's and Wedgehead options were rarely purchased. Kind of like why 80s and 90s Jaguars are known for being shop cars (as in always in the shop).

But here is the thing Scatpack, The Buick GN was released out the factory like that and was designed and marketed that way.

The Hemi was released with the intent to be even more hardcore than the GN ever was and wasn't offered with any alternately Aspirated options or fuel injection (we all know that technology existed even back then).

Hey Mopar guys, We have been hearing the "but you have a turbo" B.S for almost 20 years now, give it a rest!

The fact is that you are looking at a 3600lb family car with the aerodynamics of a brick and an engine block that you can carry with one arm. Yet in the right hands can be made to run better E.T's than the Sox & Martin pro stocks did in the 60's. This is with good street manners, fuel economy and air conditioning. Enough said there will NEVER be another car like the turbo regals.

Ok this comparison is lame at best. The Buick is at a fraction of the cost. Even if you were to make it a Price per pound it would not be a valid comparison.

Hell Give me double what I pay for a GN and I would make the GN untouchable by that porshe in both Long wind races and light to light races.

Just fess up guys, the GN is a grocery getter that can't be touched by anything in that price range. It was a engineering marvel plain and simple. :3gears:

It wasn't an engineering marvel. It was a shining star in a short period when modern cars didn't have the romance of the older ones.
