A friend of mine back in high school had a Saturn 70 GSX. I honestly don't remember what it was as far as stg1, auto, 4 spd, etc. All I know for certain is that he had a bad accident with it and he was killed. Years later I looked for the totaled car in the local yards but no luck. I was told it was crushed. I haven't thought about him or this car for a long tme. One more accounted for and never to return! Steve
I bought a transmission from a fella here in nebraska about 6 months back and told him I liked Buicks,he is a Chevy guy, anyway he said about ten years back he sent a Yellow GSX to the scrapper because it was in pretty bad shape...He did keep and sell the GS hood and aircleaner though.......
33% registered overall for the 3 years seems like quite a bit, actually. That must be a pretty decent percentage and is higher than I thought. I think its a lock that over 50% of the GSX cars are still in existence. I just hope someday I can end up with a 71 GSX. I almost traded my basketcase 70 Stage 1 for a basketcase 71 X but as usual the fact it could not be documented caused me to chicken out. I do know that there are still all sorts of cars left to discover out there, I just hope one is a Stratomist Blue or Lime Mist 71 GSX with at least 1 shred of documentation!
There was a brand new yellow GSX at Bertonazzi Buick in Milford, Mass. in the spring of 1970. It was an automatic car that was loaded with options. I don't know what happened to it.
There's a nice mostly original paint, QQ, Stage 1, not far from where I live...it's not in the registry, and the owner is not affiliated with any of the Buick clubs.
Thank you Mark! Without your dedication to this hobby, we couldn't have gotten this far with the numbers. :beer
I have been trying to buy a 70 QQ Saturn Yellow Stage 1 Auto Non AC 3:64 GSX since 1993. The car is identical to my GSX, but no matter what happens, it is never for sale! This car is definetly not in GSX registry. I feel that because these are special cars people keep them around even if owned by a Brand X guy. I think you could possibly add 50 % to GSX #'s that truly still exist . ie 235 70 GSX's in registry plus 50 % = 352 70 GSX's still in existance other half of production lost due to attrition.
The first GSX I ever saw was at a gas station on Vestal Parkway in Vestal, NY during our usual Saturday Family trip to Federal Electonics on Vestal Parkway to get parts for the Owego NY Fire Department Plectrons, that my father repaired for parts for free. We never stopped and checked it out, I don't even remember how I even knew of such a car unless I had seen something in Hot Rod Magazine, I got a subscription from my Mom when I was 16, for my Birthday! As others have stated, I think there's a few more out there, that aren't interested in the clubs, so we don't know about them, eventually over the years they will show up, I bet.l
Dang ... there are some loooong memories out there. I wasn't even a itch in my Dad's pants yet. I used to go scrounging in the rural (not even sticks around) countryside junkyards in college. I came across a junkyard owner who described a 'customized' yellow '70 Buick 'Skylark' with black stripes and spoilers that he sold as a builder ... three weeks before I was there. He got the car from a rancher in the area. I'm sure is was a GSX because he described it as an unusual dull yellow with side & hood stripes, spoilers, black bucket interior and some kind of 'vent' on the hood in front of the driver's seat ... and a white 'X' on the grille. It took me a long time to get over that one. It would not surprise me that the GSX's have a relatively high survival rate because the Buick crowd just seems the be a little different than most of the Chevy and Ford crowd and the cost of entry alone means that there was something special from the beginning for these cars. I'm sure there were some that were raced, but wouldn't most intentional racers have chosen a lighter car w/ less options? I mean, you could have ordered every performance option on a base GS 455 that could be ordered on a GSX.
It's Nice and Supprising to see the '71 almost neck and neck with the '70 percentage wise. I would still like to know what all foreign countries those 40 '72's went too..... DL
I distinctly remember a Q Q GSX around here in 75 or 76. I do not recall if it was a Stage 1 or not though, nor do I recall what transmission it had. Never got a close up look at it. I think there might have also been a 10 10 car here as well, but I might have been drinking heavily that week.ou: I do not know whatever happened to the QQ car. Perhaps it awaits in some dusty garage, awaiting my discovery.
I know of two close to me that probably are not on the register. Both are yellow, one is an original 4spd Stage 1 motor (blown a long time ago) and the other is a bench seat auto. I hadn't talked to either in 20 years except for last year I talked to and got a ride in the 4spd car. He mentioned the other car just sitting and rusting away. When I told both of them (co-owners on the bench seat car) about the 4spd X back in the early 80's I just said West of town and they went on the hunt and found it. I couldn't believe it and how I missed the chance to buy it for myself. I was talking to the owners son and they talked to the owner. Gives me another reason to get a hold of him. Brian
John you would know better than me. I see where the 188 black vinyl bucket seats were standard for the 70 GSX. Call me crazy but I asked the same thing in the early 80's and the owners laughed and said yes its a lower number car than the others. That gives me something else to check into this week while I'm getting ready for BG. I think it would be cool to know (I'm going high percentage with you) so I'll see if I can come up with anything. Brian
I've been told it gets worse as you get older. My memory was completely off. Buckets! I guess this X blew its motor and also the blue GM replacement motor. Now has a 70 455 out of an Electra. At least sometime this summer I'll get the chance to see the car. Its even sitting in a barn (adds to the story  ) I even asked if he would sell and got a quick no. Brian
I remembered a bench seat but after talking to the owner yesterday that was obviously not the case. The only thing that makes sense now is that this GSX did not have a Stage 1 motor which put it in the minority for the GSX's in 1970. Marco since these cars are still around we should try and get them on the registry. One might be its located in Frankton IN. The other is located in Anderson IN and I'm sure its not. Its up to you but I'll certainly do the foot work here. Later, Brian
It would be awesome to get more existing GSX Registered. I have tried for years to get some of the cars with no success. I think it is a pretty sweet deal. You pay nothing and I send you a bunch of cool stuff for free for simply registering your car simply because I am crazy about these cars and want to increase our knowledge of this rare and intersteing part of history. The Stage-1 Registry is just as important and awesome. If they have a Stage-1 they should register with both. Mark
I know of 2 QQ GSXs (both Stage 1, autos) in my area that are not registered. I promised Mark I would get the owners to register but they haven't yet. They say they are interested in registering their cars however. Mark don't give up...I'll get the info to you somehow, even if I have to make a trip to each one....
I had dealings with a man years ago that had at LEAST 4 GSX cars...as I recall he had 3-70 X's and 1-71 X. He did not want to sell anything he owned but never took care of them either :spank: Many people think that these cars are worth big bucks and they are right. Every year the prices get higher and people sit on them letting them rust away. Lets face it if someone said there is a rust bucket GSX for sale many of us..myself included would JUMP on a chance at getting one for less than 25k or more. Prices go up everyday on these cars and this is also why many people get out of these cars. Years ago you could buy a GS for cheep now with prices going up it is pushing people that lover the cars out and investors in. Good or bad its just the way it is. I hope one day to find or Build that dream car again. This time maybe I will have sence enough to keep it.
