    GS44667 Worlds First Stage1 Conv

I know of one 70X non-stage auto that the original owners wife did not like the saturn yellow color and the only way he could bring it home is if it was pianted a different color, and they picked a gold color...I will ask the current owner if I can post some pictures,I almost like it better...

And another that a priest had and was in the church scandal.its still around and in choice shape

In the early 80's seen pictures of a yellow X parted, rusted out shell in a field...unknown fate

Another one that about three years ago was t-boned in the drivers side by a lady...the floor pan in the back seat area was tweeked, passenger side quarter was buckled...the russian body shop that had it was going to butcher two to make one...yellow 4spd stage1,have not seen since.

In the early 70's a friend had a white S1 auto that he had bought from the local Ford dealer and got hammered one night at the bar and tried to shove it under a parked truck. Everything from the firewall forward was trashed. The salvage yard sold the drivetrain and it went into a 70 S1 car. The salvage yard soon after flooded and the remainder went to the crusher. The car had less that 40,000 on it at that time. No idea what happened to the GS S1 car. All this took place around 1974.

There was a 1971 stratomist blue GSX near Charleston/ Goose creek, SC around 1993; owner had 87 GN also.

Yeah, but on the flip side--I am saving some project cars (inside I may add) that I might not get to. But if I do it will be great and they are mine to decide what to do with.

I have had at least 25 people try to buy my 70stage 1 basketcase ragtop, usually for some insulting offer of less than the rearend is worth. Then I get the--"well at least I would restore it" line which I counter with--"I didn't see you pony up the money it took to buy this pile of parts when it was for sale, or trade the parts to get original parts back and drive 300 miles to pick it up to keep it from being parted out, etc. etc.)

I would bet GSX project car owners get a bunch of unsolicited interest due to the high profile they have achieved.

In the spring of 1970, there was a loaded white GSX in the lot of Bertonazzi Buick in Milford, Mass. I was a junior in high school, and the $5,000 sticker price was more than I could afford with my $1.60 per hour dishwashing job....:Do No:

It stayed on the lot about a month, then it was gone. I never saw it on the road either.

At the same time, there was a 70 AMC Rebel Machine at a local dealership. An equally different car for sure.

    Here's one for you guys.

Maybe around 1980, a friend of mine owned a yellow 1970 GSX with a vinyl top. I've never seen nor heard of one, and I'd suspect it was not a fake (EDIT: originally, I had "real" here but I misspoke) GSX (even that early in the game). However, he's owned over 100 cars, and while he's not sharp on musclecars at this stage in his life, he is what I'd consider a true-blue historian, so I am normally happy to defer to his claim. All I've seen are pics, so that's not proof one way or another.

    Comments?

Vinyl Tops were very popular back in the day- could have been dealer or aftermarket installed.

None made in 1970 from the factory, but the GSX's in '71 & '72 were available w/ the vinyl tops, but maybe not all colors of the tops. I thought the factory stated something like the vinyl tops were "not recommended", or something like that.

I bought that car in about 1998 or so, kept it for about 5 years and it has changed hands several times since then. Don't know where it is now. It was a pretty nice car after I had it re-painted and took the "dealer installed" (!!) vinyl top off!

Well, this is getting very interesting!

My friend emailed me and said the following:

"The only history that came with that GSX was that it had seen considerable service as a drag car. Did you remember it had no power steering? I thought it remarkable that the dealer would have gone to the lengths to install the Buick badges on the top sail panels, if that indeed was how it got the top. That would make one think that at least it was done at time of delivery. A guy named Bruce from Minnesota owned it for many years, after buying it from me. He sent photos not too many years ago but I dont know where they are at the moment.

Checked [v8buick.com] and saw this...it is referring to my former car and the man who bought it from me..."

He then posted Mark Asher's comment, to which you've replied below.

Wow. I guess I never really expected anything to happen from that post.
It was Bruce. He is a great guy, and was a pretty meticulous owner. It's funny
what your memory does to you after so many years. I recall it having no power
steering, but I simply don't remember a vinyl top on it. I can visualize getting into that car, and one or two test drives with it (no, I never thrashed on it).
    This was around 1981-83.
I'd love to see pics of it!

I also remember this car. I remembered it as the "manual trans", "manual steering" car. The memory I have of it was at one of the Win Stephens Buick car shows as he was parking it. It looked like a real handful with the manual steering box. I don't remember it having a vinyl top either, but it sure could have. I remember it sitting next to a red 72 Suncoupe with a GS hood.(I don't remember if it was a GS suncoupe or just a skylark with a GS hood)

This would have been in the early eighties I am guessing. I was in high school.

I sold a 69 Stage 1 posi rearend to Bruce in the early 80's off my mom's patio, he was a nice guy and decent to talk to about Buick stuff, even though I was a high school kid.

I wonder if I still have the records from that car around here somewhere. It had the correct power steering on it when I got the car and it seems like I would have noticed in the Wayne Roberts records if it came without p/s but I don't remember that at all. Possibly removed for racing? I also seem to remember that Terry Boyce, a magazine editor in Florida owned that car for a while before Bruce and I. Back then it seems like someone had put a radio antenna on the fender for a while and the car was jacked up in the back. Car # 273.

It's possible Terry could have had that car. I think Terry lived in Wisconsin before relocating to Florida. Terry had some rare cars before they became sought after. I know he had a Z-16 Chevelle, and a 68 Impala SS427 convert.

Bingo - it's Terry. He now lives in MI, and I do know he owned a yellow SS427 ragtop.

    Diego,

Not to derail this thread, but I know where the SS427 convert is and the owner.
I took photos of it last year. It's present condition is appalling.
The guy who bought it from Terry lived in MN, and it sat outside for the better
    part of two decades.
The current owner has it stored inside at least.

I'll be sure to pass along the news.

I always lose track of what Terry owns these days, but I think he has a '41 Caddy convertible and one of those 1970s Seville "San Remo" ragtops. He's a Buick guy through and through, though.
