Any body know of any unicorns left outstanding?

This topic should make for some good lore?

I'll start......supposedly somewhere in northeast WI is a 70 GSX apollo Stage I car that was converted into a Stage II car sometime in 72.

The car was dramatically faster with the stage II package than the stage I. Anyways the rumor is, the original owner sold it off to a guy who died, his mother kept it for years. She died, and now the sister has it somewhere in the northwoods. Wish I new where abouts it is.

Anybody know any stories like this? How many GSX's are still unaccounted for?

I guess you would have to define unaccounted. There are several GSX that are not registered including some on the board.

I do believe that there are several GSX that are owned by people that are not neccessarily "car guys" and are sitting in a barn or back yard. With the prices of the cars going up in the last few years a lot of these cars have been pubicized nationally to be sold but I do believe there are others that are out there.

I do not believe that there will ever be an accurate accounting of all remaining GSX. There are simply too many people that do not have any interest in registering a car for a whole host of reasons.

I have known of one that's in a field in the Antigo area. Talked with the owner 20 plus years ago in a bar. Showed me pictures ect.
He wrote down his name and # on a coaster...said he might sell. I called him a couple days later and said he may keep it and restore it:rolleyes: but call back in a year or so.
I've called him about every year or so. About 10 years ago he said it was pretty much shot....ya think?
I still have his info in my wallet...I called him about two years ago, still has it...sad

Why do people do that? Actually I know why- Because comapnies buy these old cars pump thousands of dollars in them- and re sell them for thousands more, every Average Joe thinks hes got a goldmine sitting in his backyard. Pisses me off

If you can take it- go to www.carsinbarns.com I stumbled across the site one nite when I was looking for classifieds before I bought my car. I can only tolerate going there about once a year before I have to close down the internet.

I know where a complete numbers matching 70 Yellow Stage 1 auto is. It's all there but totally dismantled. Just waiting for the phone call to pick it up.

PS. This one is at least out of the weather.

PSS. It's less then an hour since I posted this and I am already getting requests about selling it. You guys are funny.

A friend of a family member has "most" of a 70 QQ Stage 1 GSX that was wrecked in 1978. It is missing the motor, trans and steering wheel and column. Not rusty, but has frame horn damage and a mangled fender and hood. I have been trying to buy it for 18 years and counting. Not going to happen.

He had to put a cover on it and hide it because he got sick of people stopping when his garage door was up offering to buy the Buick.

He won't register it and does not tell anybody about it because he has enough people hounding him already.(like me)

And no, I won't tell you where it is or who has it, either.

I bet there are quite a few that are in this condition or were wrecked and crushed in the 70s and 80's before the boom. I know of at least one other that was parted out in the early 80s in the twin cities. The drivetrain and trim all ended up on a bondoed up 70 GS 455 convertible. Anybody own a rusty/putty filled convertible with a GSX steering wheel, dash pad, spoilers and hood tach? Last time I saw it was 1985 when it was sold to someone from Wisconsin, near Milwaukee. At the time it was Bamboo Cream with Black interior and stripes.

Those are the pictures I remember, Rick! That looks like a hurst t-handle, so I'd say we're looking at 4-spd car to boot! Sad Sad Sad

I know the core support in my old Blue 71 Convert is from a 70 GSX that was rear ended and crushed in the early 70's. I got the core support from the original owner who showed me a picture of the car after the accident. So that's one less also:rolleyes: On a brighter note I got the core support for $200.

A friend of mine passed on a GSX back in '80 or '81 because it was pretty rough. Asking price $500.00.
I'm sure that car didn't live much longer afterwards.

Does anyone know the whereabouts of a yellow 70 GSX 4 speed (non-Stage) that was (or maybe still is) owned by a retired shoe saleman from Edina, MN in the early 80s? I know his name, but I don't want to blast it out there.
I used to do periodic maintenance on that car for a few years at a shop I used to work at looong ago. PM me if anyone knows.

I have a 71 X-clone & I ran into a guy who gave me his Dad's number. I called & his dad was a Buick guy who had an orig 70 Saturn Yellow GSX that he bought new here in the South East Pa. area. He told me that he totalled his because his throttle stuck open one day while romping on it. He slammed it into a tree. So I asked, why didn't you just put it in neutral & turn off the key? He had no response. Hell, put it in neutral hit the brakes & let it blow up. Shame. That's another one down. (if the story's true).

    Duane,

You know of a non Stage1, total dismantle, too. Not on registry.

I have the two doors of an '70 Apollo White GSX that probably is not listed on the registry.

Thru the years, these cars, along with many others, are JUST cars. Assembly workers didn't give these any special attention. Painted stripes were a PITA for line workers and remember in the day... cars only had a 12 month 12,000 mile warranty. Cars were assembled as quickly as possible. No one EVER thought anyone would care about them ten, twenty, or even thirty years later.

    SmittyDawg Need another garage....

That is a fact, Mark. There is a gentleman I know here in MN that has two Stage 1 '70 GSX's, three Stage 1 GS's, and a shop full of parts. He just loves the cars, has restored them all, and they now sit stored in a garage on his property up north. He has no interest in any clubs or registries whatsoever, but he has no intention of selling anything at this time. He is in his sixties, so I am biding my time....he says I will be his first call if or when he ever is ready to let anything go.

My best guess at this point is roughly half of the cars are still in existinance today in some condition from completely restored to sitting in a field.

    Currently there are
    235 or 678 1970 GSX Registered - 35%
    39 of 124 1971 GSX Registered - 31%
    7 of 44 1972 GSX Registered - 16%

    All years
    281 of 846 GSX Registered - 33%

To make it 50% there would need to be another 124 cars that are unregistered. That is completely believeable to me.
