2 broken lifters, cam looks great - the story continues from link below

    http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.p...-cap-bolt-lose-in-pan-oil-pick-up-screen-crud

Crazy how the engine ran and sounded health with the back two cylinders barley working. - it is a Buick ;)

intake on driver side, exhaust on pass side, same thing, the cap or cup for the lifter has flipped on its side.

How do I fix this without spending a whole bunch?

love to change the cam but it would be to deep in the pocket, do I change all the lifters with new? Find two used ones for the two bad?
    repair or rebuild them all?

    Help Plz

Ummmm, what cam are you running?
What is your preload on the lifters?
Im thinking you have no preload on those two lifters which resulted in the lifter plunger being able to smack the snap ring.

Best thing to do is replace all the lifters. You could do just bad ones but inspect cam very well and check pushrods and rockers .

I will replace what i have to or what is best

but I just don't want to open a can of worms of parts replacing.

If I replace the cam, gotta do timing chain, better change water pump, oops best rebuild oil pump...... I can't go down that road right now.

I can spend a couple hundred not 500+

I need to get this one back on the road before winter.

the cam looks great, I bumped it around & was impressed with how it looks for the miles on it.

Course why did this happen? I have to wonder.

Must of been damage done at some point before, the whole car is way up in the front, engine lifted, pan was off a while, the lifters really drained of oil and when I ran it, those 2 popped over onto their sides? Its never been driven or off the stands since I started. which came first the chicken or the egg. bust main bolt or two funky lifters just waiting to fold over, the mystery thickens. But I got faith in the old girl, she waited till the very least of damage could happen to let me know somethings need attention. Could of waited till I was doing 90 on the e-way.

Strange stuff indeed. Have a picture of the associated rocker arms with the shaft area round it? Maybe see if the rockers are cracked or shaft is bent. Make sure the push rods are not bent either, especially now.

I'd just get two new lifters and either new pushrods or good used ones. Again, I'd be inspecting the rockers and shaft carefully to see if the shaft bolts had backed out and bent the shaft, thus allowing too much free play.

I can say that everything looks normal, nothing looks bent or "lose".

I can say that if the car sat for a while, it would sometimes have a lifter tick but it always went away rather quick, so I never worried about it.
always sounded like just one, but 2 out of 16 would sound like 1 running.

ill do a video here shortly of me poking at parts.

The rockers that aren't under load, all wiggle the same, little button in the center wiggles with them. Can kinda push the button back down after they wiggle.

its a .3gp video file off my cell 9megs https://app.box.com/s/gbehgf699cclopt564ls

will remove shafts next and give push rods a good going over, I suspect just a pool stick, they should roll evenly on a flat surface?

It's impossible to tell if the cam is good without checking the lift with a dial indicator gauge. The cam my look good but might be worn. My guess is worn parts like the rockers springs ect. The top end of these engines are known to have lifter rocker problems

pics, push rods are straight, just some wear on the shaft near the tip but not on the tip. [both flipped ones look similar.]

    IMG_20140909_145319.jpg

now that top cup on a lifter, should any of them move? when I wiggle the pushrod on the others, the suction from the oil makes that top plunger move up and down a little on some, others not. [ rocker shaft is off ]

Pushrod don't look happy. Might want a new one. No is a good time to change cam and timing chain. Suggest the rv112 or the 212. Crower has some decent cams that would work well in that motor. Just a thought. Your already here so its not far off.

Remember new lifters need too be broken in just like a new motor or as if you did a lifter / c@m change

    how much for 2?

Trying to keep cost very low, sort of the "deal" is I gotta just this one back running.

As ive been eyeballing a 455 but Im not allowed drop a bunch on both.

As I want to go through the 455 and take my time. Why Ive backed off on the whole cam swap and all new valve train parts, just fix what is broke.

I looked at your lifter pics again, and the lifter bores and surrounding iron don't look like a Buick V8, unless its just me:(
This is a Buick produced engine yes?
