I've never been a huge Sunburst Yellow fan but with black top/interior & all the black '72 accents (I'd put the orig. black body side molding back on too), it'll look stunning.
Thanks for the feedback. I should have mentioned in my original post that I am not targeting an absolute 'correct' restoration to the window sticker. I am changing the interior to buckets and console. And I will be adding an N25 bumper. In the case of the interior, it will come from the wrecked parts car. The N25 bumper, newly re-chromed, came with the car. I am planning to sell the car after enjoying it for a few months. So ultimately I need to target highest re-sale value, which obviously combines market size and buyer preference. This is where the sunburst yellow has me somewhat concerned. Looking at sold stats, I just don't see many yellow GS - in fact very very few.
I was thinking the body side moldings more to add mkre black trim & break up the yellow and bonus that it came w/'em orig. Finding a nice set might not be easy. Idk as far as re-sale. The color change would be a deal killer for me but maybe not most. Freshly done yellow might help since you don't see it often but "re-sale red" is called that for a reason. But the more I think about the yellow & look at the pics posted on the prev. page the more I like it (even w/o the moldings).
For me red is a no go, I would choose anything over that. The n-25 is a plus though. You'll never know if a color change and floor console brings more. Since it is just a flipper as well as a 350 then probably not much of a gamble either way. I like original, even if it has green interior.
I would repaint it the original Suburst Yellow. You don't see many Sunburst cars today because 1972 GS Convertibles are pretty rare, only 852 produced vs 7723 hardtops. But, Sunburst was actually the #4 most popular color out of 20 available colors in 1972. 1) Burnished Copper 2) Flame Orange 3) Stratomist Blue 4) Sunburst Yellow 5) Cortez Gold & Fire Red are tied for 5th We have a Sunburst Yellow Convertible in our GS group here in Central Florida and it gets a lot of attention. Here it is at a show next to my Seamist Green '70. Both colors, rare back in the day, are popular today.
No on fire red but check out Titian Red.............. That is a great looking car, right color, no body side molding and no vinyl top....... .
Got the car (& parts) into the booth for primer/surfacer today. A little hit & miss with the pics today. Got one of the parts before & one of the car after. Now days more sanding. I am about 99% certain I will go with the original sunburst yellow. While I was at the paint store today I had them check on pricing. Interestingly they could not find the formulation for the color. It was not my normal paint store, they were closed for the holiday wkend. I will check again next week at my regular supply store. Have any of you had an issue with getting the paint formulation?
I was just looking at pics from my last 72 convertible and noticed it had stainless trim on the lower quarters. Neither my current 72 nor the 70 parts car have them. Curious, were these options?
I think it had something to do with the difference between a skylark and skylark custom or something like that. Nice looking car, I like the rear spoiler.
I did not get mirrors with the car, but there are 2 sport mirrors on the 70 GS parts car that I plan to use. I have taken them apart for paint and to check the casting numbers. Odd numbers. I have searched all of the sport mirror threads and cannot find anything on these casting numbers. Anybody have any ideas? Left Side - Base: 52812 Housing: 52811 Glass: 52813. Looks like a 71 and 76 camaro or firebird mirrors. 1970 - 1981 Camaro Trans Am R/H Side Mirror Mounting Base GM 52812
My regular paint supply store was back open today. They were able to locate the formulation for sunburst yellow. Painting should commence within the next few days.
Question. What is the proper color for the decklid hinges? I have seen them body color and also black. Thanks.
As Redmanf1 said, those are F-body mirrors. The 52812 passenger side is mentioned in this thread: The Ultimate 70-72 A-body Sport Mirror Guide | V8buick.com I like the Sunburst Yellow very much. That car will be very sharp when completed. Keep up the good work and updates too.
