GUYS why cant we come up with a way to allow the law abiding american to have his guns and also do a better job of screening the gun buyer HERE is my thought make it similar to a drivers lic a frist time buyer would have to fill out all the normal info BUT include a more indepth questionare to help gauge the mental health of the buyer AND then like a driver lic the new buyer should have to attend x hours of a class on gun safty where he can be evaluated by a instructor that has been trained to look for (nuts) or unstable people....... in most carry states they have this type of setup NOW this may upset some die hard gun NUTS but it may have saved those 33 lives AND yes im a gun lover /between me and my sons (two who are cops ) we have over 100 guns///my state is not a carry state yet but i carry when ever i feel i need to and it could cost me but if i get gaught it will be because ive used a gun to stop bad guy and ill gladly pay the price thats where i stand pete

I figured I'd skip most of this thread - so just skimmed, and it is typical of what we've had here before.

I would like to mention there were some shootings on campus during my undergrad. First a shooting with no injuries, then, a month or so later, someone was killed. It still took time before they caught the guy.

There was a good stretch of time in which we really didn't have anything to go on. There wasn't much we could do, except be careful and go about our business.

I agree entirely. That is why I mentioned that I am glad that they defend our rights to have guns. I am a firm believer that if we all carried a gun, the killings would decrease by 75%, just for the fact that the thugs would know they would drop just as fast as they would see thier victom go.

100% true... GUNS DO NOT KILL !!! There has never been a case that a gun went off on its own in anger at any person, never. They do not mind who handles them, and just ask to be held and treated with respect. If you do not respect them, they still do not take it personally.

I know that hind sight is 20/20 and we may easily say that it could have been prevented. The problem is, there was signs and they were overlooked. There is no one person or group to blame. The funny thing about what will come out of this is sort of like EVERY safety regulation out there, they are made after an incident has occurred. That is when we realize the danger is there.

Just a few more cents from the peanut gallery...

I don't own a fire arm of any sort but I know this from history.
    Prohibition didn't eliminate alcohol.
    Drugs laws haven't eliminated drugs.
    Prohibiting guns won't eliminate guns.
The current registration laws are adequate I think.
It is ironic that a lot of high schools have metal detectors before you enter.
I guess universities might have to start that too.

the last bit of violence on my campus was one of my friends being mugged for 6 bucks. the guy knocked him out with a rock and took his 6 dollars.

i guess its good that he didnt have more money on him, but it still sucks that he got knocked out and needed stitches.

There is no way to prevent a tragedy like this from happening, there are so many crazy people in this world. My thoughts are with the families,of everyone. I couldnt imagine being the murderers parents.
unfortuanately nothing will change from this as terrible as it is,many people will talk ,many will propose solutions but i will be suprised if anything comes of it.
I dont have a gun ,havent fired one, dont see myself getting one in the future but i do like the fact that i could get one legally if i wanted to,thats the joy of living in this country
After hearing all of this persons problems i have to ask why wasn't his student visa revoked and his crazy a$$ sent packing.Let his own country deal with him. Oh well we will see what the future will bring

Rather than adding metal detectors that will be costly in both time lost and money, perhaps Universities should look for ways to increase the number of active and retired law enforcement officers on their campus. Tuition assistance in exchange for officers carrying their weapons and radios concealed when attending class would benifit both sides. The Universities should set a minimum number of years experience for the partipating officers, and establish some sort of recognition system. One of the biggest risks for a person taking action against an active shooter is getting shot by responding police.

That is also ironic, now that I think about it the local high schools all have a permanent police officer on site.
I guess we have been more afraid of high school idiots than college idiots.
Some one as crazy as this guy probably wouldn't have been detered by an army!

It might have something to do with the fact that he was a legal, green card holding permanent legal resident, here in the country with his parents since he was eight years old. No student VISA, for all intents and purposes he was a naturalized citizen albeit without formal citizenship. That's how he was able to purchase the guns. From what we know now, the behavior he showed during the last few years should have been more than enough to legally intervene and hopefully prevent what we saw happen but that's not the case.

There is so much misinformation about guns in our country, the bottom line is no matter what laws we have the criminals like Cho will still find a way to get them and kill people with them. More gun laws won't do anything but put more innocent people in danger because we won't be able to defend ourselves from an attack.

    Sheesh...

Sad deal and yes-the gun debate gets revved up again. As the new world developed, guns were a part of life=a tool for hunting food and protection from natives. Those needs have passed, but the reality now is the millions of firearms that are 'out there'. A goal of some is for no firearms in the hands of any save the military. Others point to the 'right to bear arms'. Many might support the first viewpoint excepting that most logical folks realize that there would never be any 'retrieval program' that would truly work. Criminals would always keep or have guns-leaving the innocent and law abiding helpless. This guy seemed sick and alienated-not happy with moneyed and materialistic people.

Most Universities, around here at least, have their own police or armed security. But just as with regular police patroling city streets, they have too much territory to cover and avoid certain areas, unless called, to avoid disrupting classes.

a police officer on every corner wouldn't have stopped this nutball and will never stop a nutball with a gun in the future.

beating the "we need more cops" drum is totally irrelevant to this specific situation..

ooo i bet our segway ropo (rowan police) could have taken care of buisiness!!! once we had a girl faint in a second floor classroom in the science building and the segway cop came up the elevator and screeched into the room.

the guy knocked him out with a rock and took his 6 dollars.

that was kinda my point earlier. the scary thing is, once your friend was unconcious the only thing keeping the assailant from killing him was that he didn't want to deal with the hassle.

ooo i bet our segway ropo (rowan police) could have taken care of buisiness!!!

okay, NOW you're just being a goofball. :spank:

Cops on Segways?? You are kidding, aren't you? 10 speed bikes would be more realistic and definitely less costly!
This cold blooded killing isn't just a university thing. It only happened to take place at a university. This could have happened anywhere,in any city or town. Turning universities into prison compounds won't help very much.Someone with a gun and enough ammo would be able to get through any security checkout simply by shooting the guards and continue right on through. The idea of retired police officers is a good one for starters.

its just kinda sad that hindsight is 20/20 all the time. i mean, he was referred to counseling a few times, and nothing was done about the rest of his behavior. maybe people should have to go through a psychological test before purchasing a gun (or is that one of the requirements already). i believe he bought it legitimately.

yea we have one segway cop, i guess they figure he can chase people around campus without getting tired from pedaling (gotta love how they spend our tuition money).

they didnt even steal his cell phone or watch, just the few bucks on him. luckily the police found him soon afterwards and took him to the hospital. it was on st patties day, he was walking back from a bar at 2am and the campus was empty because it was spring break. it was on a surface street, not in the middle of campus. it was probably some townies that wanted money for drugs

years ago,i dated a lady that sufferred from depression.

one night,to get attention, she pointed a loaded .45 at me.

if she had shot me,i wouldn't have blamed the gun,the cops,or her parents.

i already knew she was sick, and i didnt hide the clip.

it would have been my own damn fault.

Well here's a classic argument based in Minimization and the reason why every American citizen should carry a bomb. Oklahoma 168 DEAD, HIROSHIMA 49,000 DEAD, NAGASAKI 49,000 DEAD. Russians exterminated in Gulag 1905-1954, 66,000,000 DEAD.

And this is precisely the problem with guns & bombs the killing is made easy.
Its not the same as feeling broken teeth on torn knuckles, the fluid of the eye ball popping over the thumb or the snapping of the digits between the teeth.

And it's the fear that makes people want guns that specifically kill other people because they were beaten up or robbed or because the Russians are coming!

And then it's the anger at being afraid, at being weak and spineless without your gun and a god when its the biggest and most powerfull.

Get over your fear, outlaw guns designed to kill people!

These 30 are sisters and brothers. It hasn't been a week and their lives are being made trivial.

The real irony here is the fact that several dozen (at least)people knew this man's history with violence, writings and how he acted. Apparently, we as a bunch think its better to not say anything or get involved in someones problems or to report this to the proper people to get this person help. I am not trying to minimize the situation,as several others who knew him personally did that already. It is a terrible shame these people died or were injured by a gun,but from what I hear, this person planned this meticulously and it wouldn't have mattered what instrument he used. He could have as easy used explosives that could have been bought, assembled by someone who is at an engineering type of school. It really upsets me that all of these people who witnessed his behavior now are stepping up and saying he had a problem. Where were they a week ago? I know we will never agree on gun ownership or banning of guns, but as a human,we need to start informing the correct people of persons that have insane or insecure tendencies. I feel that the press is also to blame for letting us see what they want us to see. I think NBC showing the pictures, video and such from this madman did absolutely no good at all..Shame on the Media. They should rot in Hell for doing that to the families of the victims..

Jim, I agree with the peace officers in classes. Tuition exchange to stop felony actions would be a big plus. Maybe the possibility of a armed person in these areas would deter some crazed student. We will never know though.

We all wish we knew the answer that would prevent another tragic event like this from happening again. It's WAY too late for gun control in this country. We are in full reactive and preventative mode. If you stopped the importing of weapons, producing american firearmsm and outlawed firearms today, it would not make a dent. There are millions of guns floating around in the US. Mine are kept in a big 800 lb locked safe (21 of them) to keep them where they should be. Where is yours?

That fricken weasel that killed those students chose the absolute easiest way to get the Glock. However he would have bought one in the alley if that would not have worked. It is just a small part of the puzzle right?

And, the media sucks. WHY, WHY, WHY release the video of that idiot???
