:ball:   So today was a very crappy day.
I was all stoked and pumped up about running my car for the first time at the track since starting to do all the work on it last august. On the way to the track my car overheats so we pull over let her cool off and take frontage roads to sacramento raceway.Get there sing in and go to tech the guys like "o wow nice car dont see many old buicks here mostly turbo regal and gn's"So I was like:TU: but then I get kicked back because im missing a lugnut!!:blast: Not really a big problem but my lane was comeing up for runs so I run up and down the lanes looking for someone who might have a spare I got lucky a guy with a badass 72 chevelle had one,but by the time I got it my lanes had allready ran!

SOO finally I get to run and I get paired up against some nice old guy with an aluminum v-10 dodge srt 10 pickup. I was like greeeaaat well hopefull ill give him a run he had 12.90 on his window so I get up go to do my burnout do a pretty good one,my car dies when I let off the throttle!Get it started and stage the run goes.

Did you figure out why your car overheated on the way to the track? Perhaps that had something to do with your times. Also, what mods did you do to the engine?

You definitely have something amiss... I had a basically stock 72 GS motor with a good carb,MSD ignition parts and a fresh tuneup that I ran 15.40's-15,50's with and drove it to the track. It was a daily driver car as well. Car was a 70 GS (with 72 GS parts instead) with a 4 speed and 3.42 gears..

:Do No: I know! Its my daily driver as well this was the first time it has overheated on me since I have owned it in 2005.On paper it should not overheat I have a new water pump new 190 degree thermostat I just did a coolant flush and a huge flex fan.It didnt overheat on the way back either

could you be running out of gear? 3.73s must rev pretty good with 235s at 80 mph?

I don't know why you would run a 190* thermostat. The engine won't run cooler unless the thermostat lets it. That engine will want to run at about 200* with that stat. Also, what is your total timing? The engine is definitely down on power, you only had an 80 MPH trap speed and that tells the story. It should be at least 10 MPH higher. Also, you need some sticky tires. A good ET requires a good 60' time. Trying to run the car on street tires will prove very frustrating. Was the cam degreed in? Put a good Q-jet on there, 650 is too small.

I wonder if the secondaries were even opening? Did you feel them going down the track? Im pretty sure that Holley is a vac secondary. Whats the list #? 0-6510?

I thought the same thing when I read about the carb Larry. I bet a 750 double pumper or a nice Q-Jet alone would wake it up.

What about the trans converter? What is it? Your over heat problem may be a bad distributer

To me your car hasnt got the combination right yet. My daughters stock 350 @ 3000 feet of air went 15.05 with 293 gears and no posi.

  15. why a 650 cfm carb ? the factory carb was a 750 cfm

I like the idea of a 750 q-jet as well.

Keep in mind as others have stated, it's not just a matter of bolting on the parts...that's actually the easy part. Now you have to systematically begin tuning the ignition advance curve and the carb mixture including secondary opening rate. You'll have to resist the desire to change several things at once, though...the only way to know what's happening is to change one thing at a time and record the results.

The frustrating part however, is that a new advance curve may dictate carb tuning, which may dictate tweaking the timing again. It's really not that bad of a vicious circle; with patience you'll get everything working together nicely.

Then the fever will grab you again, and you'll make another improvement for more power...then start tuning all over again! We do have a sickness, that's for sure!

What about tuning? What is your total timing? How is your carb set up?

Do you have headers? I think they'll get you a lot more benefit than just throwing a too-big carb on there.

Sometimes the mixture can go very rich after you close the throttle, and it will stall. That isn't what concerns me. Your trap speed of 80 MPH tells me the engine is down on power. The trap speed should be higher than that even if you spin the tires for 100'. Are you sure the cam is in right? Are you sure of your total timing?
