UPS strike is looming....

    It sounds like both the unions and the companies need to have ‘come to Jesus’ moments. If unions weren’t the prickly pears (or other harsher terms) to deal with, management (and others) might not dislike them so much. If management would treat employees better and keep jobs here, then maybe unions wouldn’t have to be such SOBs. I think there’s a lot a blame to sling around, and as consumers, there’s a lot we did to ourselves. My point is no one in this current economic situation is blameless.

    Be careful with the "robber barons" narrative. Sure, the titans of industry of the 19th century were no angels, but they presided over an increase of standard of living that had never seen before or since. That increase in standard of living came to a grinding halt once unions and government got a chokehold on industry. During the time of unrestrained capitalism of the 19th century, wages went up spectacularly and the prices of goods went down as well. Even during the so-called monopoly of Standard Oil, the price of oil continuously went down. Same with steel and Carnegie. In a century, America went from a rural backwater to being the largest economy in the world by 1900. Today we live on the inertia generated by those people.

    The people in media and academia who write history (and applauded the Wagner Act) are no angels either. But they are the ones who manufacture history.

    Exactly Patrick . Everyone wants to blame unions. And rave how the Companies are the best . All the CEO's think about is how to make stuff smaller , cheaper and show a stock price increase to the stock holders . Also the corporate raiders like Carl Ichan did nothing for american workers except bankrupt them . Blame also has to be placed on the Wall street speculators . who are making millions , not paying taxes with all their loopholes and thinking about buying a bigger Yacht . And they call it Capitalism .

    I don't want to blame unions, I just want everyone to see that there is two parties in every agreement, and to demonize one side vs the other is not realistic. There is plenty of blame to go around here. Greed is the underlying cause of the demise of American Manufacturing, equally spread around amongst unions/employees as well as stockholders/management/politicians.

    Never forget that money is the root of all evil.

    Pretty weird as the stock price of yell has over doubled and no bankruptcy filing yet.
    I've been job hunting and getting the ole resume updated. Filed for unemployment and will see what kind of opportunity presents itself in the next few weeks and make a decision on what to do. Crazy to go from possible strike on Sunday to a shut down of the whole thing then next.

    While I'm not a big union supporter, I feel bad for all those now out of a job.

    I'm not an attorney in real life or on TV nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night but Chapter 11 is reorganization vs. Chapter 7 liquidation so they might not be done although it'd be very difficult/expensive to start back up now. Last I saw there was a financing opportunity on the table (private equity maybe) and I'd imagine there also exists the possibility of this being a union busting tactic.

    Absolutely Dano . Its already said that there are " Investors " jumping on with the idea of getting rid of the Union . Just another way for the company to go back on all the things they promised over the years and screw the little guy while they pocket big profits for management .

    Thats an interesting theory. With the current job market for OTR trucking I'd bet nearly every employee had a job before the day was over.

    And I'm not that knowledgeable about the different bankruptcy chapters in America. It appears to me yellow as it now operates could be done. They may resurface under another name and without the union as mentioned.

    as a former employee(though I haven't received any communications as such other than the forementioned call from the operations mgr that they were ceasing operations) my job search has commenced. I still own a decent chunk of shares so I hope they do something to keep it going until the mandatory hold on them allows me to sell(bought under an espp so I have to hold them per the deal) and I've sold the shares I could before the bankruptcy filing . did get clipped out of 72hrs of vacation time and 32 hrs of sick time. but hopefully I can get a grievance in and be able to collect on it in the future as I did submit the proper paperwork for those hrs the Friday before the operations ceased. either way I'm not holding my breath.
    I am glad for UPS on their upcoming vote on what appears to be a well earned raise. companies run roughshod over labor and as the labor supply dries up with the genx and their children the gen z the number of workers is shrinking so wages will need to adjust to attract the labor. union or not getting people to show up is a problem and ups knows it or they wouldn't be making market adjustments on the wage and stipends if you show up everyday on time.
    I don't care how good the ai and robots seem there are plenty of jobs where a human is the only way at this point .

    I hope it all works out for you in the end . I went thru one in the late 80's . After 10 years with the company I lost 3 weeks of vacation plus some sick time . On Dec 21st . A real nice Christmas present .

    But who knows about AI . The morons now have cars that stop for them when they don't pay attention , drive for them so they don't have to hold a steering wheel anymore . And Park the car for them because they don't have the skill to do it . Plus they get to stare at a TV screen in the middle of the dash . WTF ???

    In the end the real loser is the truck driver. Little guys get to take it and like it. I bet those guys were safer on the roads than what is out there now.

    There's plenty of empty seats waiting for safe professional drivers. A good number of those will be longer haul requiring several days on the road. I believe most of Yellow's drivers were home every night, but will defer to those more knowledgeable.

    There's many who believe overall truck safety was compromised with the electronic logs rules coupled with lack of truck parking in many areas, such as near larger metro areas. It's been stated the average truck driver wastes close to one hour per day trying to find a safe parking spot while not violating the 11 hour driving rule.

    Truck driver demographics have changed over the past 30 years as well. We're seeing more newer citizens and minorities getting into the industry, which is a good thing. Women truck drivers are slowly increasing as well, which is also a good thing.

    A lot of the driver demographics that are changing can be attributed to many males having DUI's and cannot get a CDL . That's why you see more women drivers these days .

    With a CDL drivers threshold being at .04 and not the usual .08 even in their personnel car it hard to find qualified drivers
