Well it appears that I might have good hood clearance. But I've thought about it, and if I don't I'll probably get a cowl hood or a pro stock? Which will look better?

I'm going to keep the stock exhaust manifolds, and run dual cutouts with dual 1 chamber's followed by turndowns right before the rearend.

I'm not sure what the pro stock looks like but I like the looks of the cowl induction hoods. I'm using stock manifolds as well for now and I have no idea about exhaust at this point; as little as possible probably...
The guys I got this car from had already cut a square hole in the hood and had a scoop fiberglassed on to it. But I think I might try and see if I could make that hole into a decent looking shaker hood like some 2nd gen factory camaros had.
    427...got those pics yet?

The one-chamber exhausts are super loud! Be forewarned:grin:

If I did get a 700r4, how would everything hook up? Because the one I had was electronically controlled (i think). Surely the speedo cable would still work, but what about the TV cable and whatever else there is?

I believe Reynold is right on in his assessment. But you should ask a trans shop. Junkyards might also have an old trans they'll sell you cheap (or just the tailshaft). I swapped the short tailshaft on my TH400 for another short one. Easy swap. Maybe the long to short is the same?

That 700R4 I believe is controlled by the TV cable rather than so much electronics. Of course, there is the consideration of connecting to a 12v power source to lock up the converter. Never done the swap but this is how I understand it.

Here's a decent article (even if it is fram chebbie mag) on that TV cable and adjustment.

    All most ready to fly

Well I went to a local driveshaft shop today, gave them my slip yolk and measurements and I should be getting a driveshaft either tomorrow or monday. I pretty much have everything else set up to be able to see how she drives around after I put the driveshaft in. I have a throttle control and a way to shift gears...I don't think I'd call it a shifter, but it does allow me to change gears from the cabin. I'll have to wait till I have some more cash on hand and can afford a hurst v-matic 2 or something.

427Camaro, how's the hunt for a tailhousing going? Did you have a chance to snap some pics of that yearone crossmember?

About the tailshaft, I'm just going to sell the TH400 long shaft, and buy a short shaft TH400 tranny, or maybe a 700r4. Do the 700R4's have to be built to work with a powerful 455?

Doh! I forgot about the pictures. I'll get on that. Sorry.

My trans came out of a 73 Electra so it had the long tailshaft. The tranny shop that went thru it changed it to a short shaft for almost nothing. They had some laying around and it was no big deal. I would change it out if you have already sunk some cash into it or you know it is a good tranny. Then at least you will know what you have. It's alive!

Well I picked up my driveshaft today and put it in. All I can say is that this car is the scariest I've ever driven! I don't have a speedo hooked up at this point and it's only barable to drive with ear plugs but I finally got brave enough and put it to the floor and didn't let off till I saw my life flashing before my eyes...
The temp seems to be staying down too. This is going to be a lot of fun...

    Wayne......

And your doing the swap right. A weekend swap of a 455 straight out of a old Buick into a Camaro doing nothing but pull it, drop it in, and go, would still be scary fast.

I sure hope you have plans for a good cage. Seen to many of them ripped in half buy a street sign without one.

Yup, and actually it's a 69 430, not a 455. But from what I've seen the ratings on the stock 430 are grater than the stock 455s since they dropped in compression ratio as they went into the 70's. Am I right? Yea, some more safety equipment would definatly be a good thing...

71 compression ratio dropped from 10.25:puzzled: to 8.5 I believe in the 455's.

Rating styles also went from SAE Gross to SAE Net. What that means is that prior to about 1971, engine horsepower was rated with zero engine driven accessories like water pumps, fans, alternators/generators, etc. This is called Gross Horsepower. Net is the opposite and has the most common engine configuration with all accessories installed and operating as if the engine was in the car. When that is added to the compression ratio drop, you get what appeared to be horsepower drops much more significant than they actually were.

You can figure on it costing 10-15 HP for a fan/waterpump, 5+ HP for an alternator, 3-5 HP for a powersteering pump. As RPM goes up, so does the HP required to drive each of these accessories.

I still say this is the absolute coolest swap I have heard of in a very long time. Makes the old V-8 Vegas and Pintos seem pretty tame!

Sorry guys, have to sell the project. I've already sold the 455/400 to raresun on here. The car is up for sale now along with the TH400 conversion kit.

Doh! That stinks. I was looking forward to having more than one 3rd gen around here w/ a bbb. Could you take some pics of the conversion kit and send them to me? I might be interested in it. How much would you want for it? Also, would you consider selling parts of the camaro? How's the interior of it? I'm looking at things like dash pad, door panels, other random interior panels and maybe headliner. Thanks!

    What happened Matt???

Did you catch that 1600hp Thirdgen on ESPN that was talking how the cars are really crap. They are so high off the ground it hard to break 200mph and his only option is to just add more power and hope the tires don't spin half track and / or catch too much air under the front end.

I guess there was a wing someone made that got the thirdgen over 200mph but the company is gone now. Heard stories about it on boards before.

    not that it's any consolation...

I've had the car up and running for a while now so I decided to take some more pics:
    http://www.geocities.com/mustang732/images/430inCamaro/updated/
Notice the clean way I slapped the alternator regulator on my stock buick alternator...
Also notice how close the power steering pump comes to the fittings on the steering gear...I have to take the power steering pump off to put the hoses on the steering gear...
The buick is pretty much bigger than a small block chevy... :moonu:

Yeah, I'll get those pics up for ya. I'm selling the camaro as a whole, minus engine/tranny. I've got $3000 invested in it. Will sale for $500. The tranny kit would go for $150 + S.H. The camaro is overall a nice looking car. The seats need uphosltered.

Course I should of said he was running a stock F body, stock wing and everything, no glass. Why with even 1600hp he can't break 200mph

Why I mentioned it, with the stock body and wing it just can't cut the air well enough, but someone made a stocker style one that got the thridgen over 200mph once.

I don't think it would be that hard to slam the body into the frame. Cut the lower pan and drop the body an easy 4-5 inches. I'm 6'2" and have plenty of head room.

    Matt

Course a monster rice wing would assure 300+ mph just like it does for them Hondus.
