My challenger was a 8 speed. My recently sold F150 was a 10 speed.

I almost bought an automatic ZL1 Camaro based solely on the fact its a 10speed and from a roll or stop is unreal,...the 5.0s are 10speeds,..they will roll with hellcats from certain mphs

I figure I’m making soccer mom horsepower at 5:50hp at the crank i’ll tell you this.... the only thing that will hook are drag radials a fat street tire loses traction every time I put my foot in it 482 Stage one aluminum heads port and polish roller cam headers and 3 inch exhaust and is one of JW’s motors. Hell it puts a smile on my face every time I go for a spin new cars are great but they just don’t have the soul Of a 60s or 70s car

You'll be enjoying that new found hp a LOT sooner if you upgrade your current engine vs having a new one built. A LOT sooner.

This is exactly why you should NOT build your engine to “70 specs” or “Stage1 specs”,like some say. Sure, that was powerful back in 1970 when they were built, but 50 years later,it’s a dud. You are completely stiff arming the advantage of modern engine components and technology,to make more power, better drivability, and better mileage than they ever had back then.

Part of me is tempted to buy a top end, and then buying a short block to swap over this winter.

That is what I did over the years. My iron 462 engine consisted of Speed Pro pistons untouched Stage1 heads, intake, KB118 cam, and MT headers. I bought a pair of TA Performance Stage1SE heads and Edelbrock Performer intake from Greg Gessler. I had Greg do some entry level porting to them. The heads flowed 313/225@ .550" lift. He also milled them .040" to bring my chamber size down to 59cc, and increase my static compression from 9.4:1 (iron) to 10.4:1. When bolted on, it brought my track performance from low 13's to mid 12's. With an SP1 intake and 1000 DP carburetor, my best was 12.11 @ 112 MPH. It is important to bring your static compression up to 10.5 to 11:1 compression to get the most out of the aluminum heads. The flow increase will give you a performance boost for sure, but the compression is important. Later on, I had Jim Weise build me a roller cam short block and sent him my aluminum heads, DP carburetor, and SP1 to complete the engine.

If you do not have headers, but intend to buy some, go with the Stage2 SE heads. They are very close in price.

You could build a 600+ HP engine but the rest of the car has no business tangling with the “newer stuff”. Brakes, chassis work, steering, suspension, etc, or make sure you have your will up to date if you’re messing around on the street.

Actually, the first thing I do is address all of the safety issues that come with making more power. I go through the whole chassis and suspension to modernize and improve everything. That technology and chassis design was barely enough back then. The usual tough decision is whether you want to put a cage in the car or not.

Who cares if newer cars are faster? I could not care less.
Back when my car still had an engine all BMW's and Mercedes guys messed around when they came closer...don't know what it is maybe the rear spoiler and the N-25 exhaust....they all watch Fast and Furious and think it's reality....

My car is set up pretty nice, hotchkins front and UTI rear suspension, hotchkins shocks all the way around, 4 way disc brakes, etc. just lacking enough power to make it as fun as I want.

Don't fret about modern cars too much. I blasted a WRX with my Buick and nobody here believed me anyway as apparently they are untouchable, so it doesn't matter anyway.

Are you comparing performance from a roll or dead stop?
At TNT, my 350 GS will blow away a Hemi Challenger off the line, but he catches me and pulls away bout half track.
