And here is a shot of the earlier manifolds ports... not banked, and the casting is not as nice as the new ones... this was the stuff we had to go in and clean up, above and beyond a port match.

As always, Mike is continually making his good parts even better..

You can see the new name on the pics of the new manifold I have posted.. just "SP-1"

Here is the old manifolds name that was cast in.. it's how to tell the difference at a glance.

I will be dyno testing the old vs the new manifold, as they come out of the box, with just a port match.. no plenum work in either, and we will see if all the new features are worth any power. It should be.. we consistantly saw 10-15 HP from working the plenum of the old manifold, to make it look much more like the new one pictured here.

This is the old SP-1, for easy id..

    Now, if only it had
    FIRING ORDER
    1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2
cast on it in front of the carb so we could straight-faced to the brand-x guys, "Yeah, that's original factory....." :puzzled:

Um........why not call it the "SP-2"??????? no confusions:Do No:

Because the SP-2 is the High port version of this manifold, which has been around for a number of years.

    That is purdy!!!!
    Not even polished yet.
So hopefully just a little port matching is all that will be needed.
    Way Cool!!!:TU:

Dang, that's purdy! They sure have come a long ways from when I got mine! I wish I had photos of the way mine used to be. Cyl's 6, 8, & 5, 7 had HUGE pieces of casting flash right at runner entrance. Luckily (for me) my head porter that fixed it didn't whine too much!! But he claimed to have spent quite a bit of time on fixing it.:Do No: He also said he was impressed at how much more flow potential there was left in it.

Actually I prefer the manifold to say nothing.... some red paint....ummm, no that's the stock manifold.:Do No::bglasses:

What performance difference would we have seen if this version of sp1 would have been avalible during the Car Craft build up in Oct 2001.
Could the buick have taking the torque title too.even though it's been said that the torque #s were tampered with anyway.

Where did you hear this? I was more than just a little miffed myself than Buick didn't get the Torque Title.

    Tell me more..

Seriously it wasn't Jim, but someone that had a major hand in the set up and the dyno results.
I dont want to say who without contacting that person first and getting permission. I think we where talking in confidence. but a conflict started with the torque results and was contested by one of the other motor camps.and I dont want to add to it.
Jim might give us little more details on the subject.he's in a position to say more without crossing the line.

    Well do tell.

If the results were intentionally skewed somehow, I think it fair to tell US why:stmad:

Was it chevy, or mopar that cried?:Brow:

    I'm waiting for Jim.

The reason that topic came up was I had noticed that all the top torque engines were using a wilson spacer. with the four holes that taper off to a open spacer.

Which from articles I'd read on them are worth considerable torque and horse power on most applications.even the Olds motor picked up with one after the do over with the different intake.
So I was calling to ask why wasn't it tried on the buick motor.along with my answer to that question,(that that tid bit was given).

If you're wondering the reason for not trying the spacer, was that It had been tried years ago, along with other designs with not much gain.
and that being that it was the most costly build up by a large margin it wasn't used.
I know Jim will tell all more on the subject.

I would hazard a guess that you would see an increase of about 10 numbers, both HP and TQ.

I know alot about that test, and that motor, but am unaware of any "number tampering" either for or against the TA motor.

If you stuck this intake on a stock 71 455 with a free flowing exhaust and Stage1 heads, what kind of increases would one expect?

Can you guess which car I'm talking about?:Brow:

I think the main reason for not taking the torque title also was because we only have access to a low profile dual plane. If we had a RPM air gap for the BBB we would have kicked out alot more torque.:Brow:

I personnal asked Edelbrock to reconsider making one for our motor but they declined for now.

I know the old SP1 picks up alot with just a small amount of work in the plenum. I had mine off on the street car and noticed that with the Thermo 1000 the air was hitting the 1/2" tapper 180 deg. on the rear. I blended all the openings while I was at it and reassembled with an oil shield. Car picked up 2 mph and 1.5 tenths with no other changes. 30-45 minutes well spent!:bglasses: :beer

    Thanks Jim,

The new design looks like it will give the performance of what would be a 300.00 plus port job.on our current intakes,It aloso looks to be very nitrous friendly, with the turtle hump.
Do you think this one would be able to take better advantage of the Wilson or HVH four hole spacers that taper to an open spacer.
I have one I can ship to you for dyno comparisons I know a lot of us would be interested in the results.

If you're unaware of any dyno issues I'm going to leave that subject alone and let that Pandora's box stay closed.

    Terrance,

Yes, I was very happy to see that I can pretty much just take the manifold out of the box, port match, shield and polish it, and put it on.

Will help keep the costs of these motors in line, as the parts continually keep getting more expensive.

Sure, I would love to try your Wilson Spacer.. I have seen them, but never had a chance to dyno with one. Send it on up!

I was just having an email conversation with another guy recently about that spacer.. his seat of the pants feel was that he got more bottom end, and mid range, but lost some up on top.

The motor this manifold will be on should go to the dyno the middle of this month.

    Thanks Jim,
I will be sending it out quickly, I know you're a busy man.I dont have a Wilson spacer, I went with High Velocity Heads super sucker.
after reading a dyno comparison between the two.

I really feel that these spacers are better suited for the KB wildcat intake but this might be different with the new TA intake.

This is a reprint of the articles that that made me chose the HVH.
pay close attention to articles 1 and 3.
