That's weird actually, most people have told me that there is a belt that should run it, but I know for a fact that I only had 2 belts on the crank pulley. One for the powersteering and one for the alternator, there wasn't one for the a/c compressor, and I also know there wasn't one for my fan/waterpump either! There is no place on the crank pulley for an extra belt, except for that one space in the middle, and that is for the A/C compressor, which I took off anyhow. :Do No:

The fan if it is stock should be a mechanical fan. Its driven by the crankshaft indirectly. The belt for the alternator should go around the alternator pulley, around the crank and also over one of the cam pulleys. This turns the water pump which the fan is directly bolted to. Thats why if you cruising along the highway and lose a belt, especially on newer cars with serpentine belts you see your dash light up REAL quick!. If you have this belt on and it isnt turning there isnt enough tension.

Thanks Rob, I was getting kind of worried there for a moment. I have heard people use the term "fan belt" before, but I guess they weren't talking about the same cars I am thinking about, lol. I coulda swore my car didn't have a belt for the fan, so I guess I was right. Once again though, thanks :TU:

Going by your picture there is no pulley on the water pump. There must be a waterpump pulley and it's driven by the crank pulley. Usually the crank turns the alternator and waterpump using the same belt, sometimes it also turns the A/C too. The waterpump pulley is what drives the fan, if the water pump is not turning you have no coolent circulation through the motor and she'll be hot right away. Put the pulley off the v6s waterpump on and stand to the side of the car and see what groove in crank pulley it lines up with.

Hope this will help with your fan belt problem. (as long as the attachment posted, first time doing this) On the crank pulley the groove closest to the engine carries the PS belt. The next groove toward the front of the car is for the water pump/fan/ alternator belt. This belt goes from the crank pulley to the water pump/fan pulley then to the alternator and back to the crank. If you have A/C you need to have a third pulley on the crank and a second groove on the water pump/fan pulley because this belt goes from the crank around the fan pulley to the A/C compressor and back to the crank. At least thats how it would have been on the 1970 350. They may have changed things slightly by 76. An easy way to find out is to ask your local parts store if you can look at their fan/accessory belt cataloge it should have an exploded view. As far as I know all GM vehicles of tha period used the fan belt to drive the water pump, fan, & alternator.

I guess it does run by a pulley. I went out and inspected it today, I do not have a pulley for the water pump off of the V6, and I know it did not have one as I haven't lost nothing yet in the swap, as I have kept and documented every single piece I took off and am doing the same for everything that goes on, and nowhere did I document a water pump pulley off of the v6. I will have to change the water pump to a shorter nose one, as the pulleys will not line up if I use the V6 crank pulley. On the other hand, I'd really love to just take the water pump off of the v6(shortnose I think?) and use it on the v8 if I can do that, if it's at all feasible?

    Thanks!

That water pump will work but you might want to buy a new one. It'll save you an inevitable headache shortly down the road changing it while it's in the car.

    alec296 i need another buick

actually you have it backwards the short pump might be on the 350 if it didnt have ac
long pump should be on the v6 since 70 was about the last year for short pumps. v8

Thanks for the opinions/info! I went to the junkyard today and got the water pump pulley off of a 350 buick motor, and I lined up the pulley w/ the crank pulley, and it's going to line up perfectly. So I guess I don't have to change it if it's not necessary! If I can, I will try to time it and get it running good on the weekend! :TU:

    Another snag I ran into!

Well, now I can't get the darned fuel pump to work. I got a new fuel pump, and put it on, hooked everything up, and it won't pump. So I took it back, and I know for a fact that the one I had on my v6 worked, otherwise the car wouldn't start nor run. And of course, both fuel pumps are identical, so I took the one off the 6 and put it on the v8 and it still won't pump fuel. I don't think this has anything to do w/ it, but the one that came on the motor had 3 outlets on the bottom, and the one on my v6 only had 2. So I can only use one w/ the 2, as I have the line that goes from the fuel pump up to the carb, and of course I have the line that goes from the fuel pump to the gas lines that lead into the tank. What could be the problem? Thanks

2 or 3 outlets don't matter. That should be pumping. Can you look in the hole? Is the eccentric in place behind the cam gear? Are you sliding the pump in with the arm on top of the eccentric? I think (think) If you have the engine up on number one that the fuel pump will slide in un-loaded and work fine.

Orrrrrrrr, is there a problem getting fuel to the pump?

Thanks for the advice/and info. I thought I had installed it correctly, but you know me. :Dou: I'll have to take a look at it this weekend or whenever I can get around to it. Once again, thanks! :TU:
