Update for today is minimal, as my son had to work, and I did some Hunny-do list stuff. When Haydn came home, he installed new Remflex header gaskets, and got the headers back onto the engine...by himself! I gave him a hand with flushing out the heater core, and rad...both had some mud in them, but after reverse flushing them a few times, all is clean and clear now. Got the radiator in too, along with the electric fans, and controller. He says it's gonna run tomorrow....
Its a good idea to start off with plain water with maybe some Water Wetter for the anti-corrosion additives it has but if you only run straight water for a couple of hours you should be alright without the W/W. The reason to start off with just water without anti-freeze for the initial startup is just in case there is a coolant leak into the oil. Anti-freeze ruins bearings, so you don't want to chance it getting in the crankcase. Add anti-freeze after you're sure everything is sealing like it is supposed to(that's how I do it anyway). Saved my but before doing it this way because of a badly machined intake manifold mounting surface that puked water into the oil, would of been really bummed if anti-freeze dumped in the crankcase!
I was wondering what the difference was...if it leaks into the oil, it needs to be dumped and flushed anyways...but now knowing that coolant eats bearings...straight water for sure on the startup. (We had to get the intake cut on both sides so it sat low enough for the ports to line up.) Had 0.030" cut off each side.
I can tell you this, that SP3 will spin it past 6 grand like nothing. I just did it today ran to 6200 and was still pulling. Good luck I want to hear this hot rod. It looks real good nice job there.
It's alive! Initial settings: 12*BTDC Left the carb as it was on the old engine. Could not get the regulator to drop the fuel pressure below 10psi. (Was at 14psi when we initially primed the system. Primed the engine before we installed the distributor, purged the oil pressure line out, then hooked it up...hit 80psi. Almost instantly fired, but it sneezed, and quit. (Sent video to Sean, as he should see it first for all the help he has given us.) Tried again, and it fired right up. Ran it up a bit, checked oil pressure, (80psi cold), ran it up to 2000 just to run everything in. Got worried when we saw smoke coming off the headers, so we shut it down, and checked for leaks...no leaks...just burning in the header gaskets, and paint on the heads,. Ran it a bit longer, and was worried something happened to the electric fans, as the temperature gauge was reading 230*...shut it down again. Grabbed the temperature gun, and checked several points all over the engine...nothing was even close to 230*...heck, nothing was even over 150*...that's why the fans were not running. Started it again, and ran it up till the fans cut in...did a walk around, and checked under the car for any leaks...all good. Have a walk around video...sent it to Sean as well. I have no idea how to post it here...
After Haydn and I had a beer...I said, I'm going for a drive! I jumped in and fired it up. Stuck it in gear, and with my foot on the brake pedal, I just barely revved it up....well if the damn car didn't start to go sideways in the garage! You should of seen the look on my son's face! I think he was shocked to say the least. He's in love!
Thank you Sean for posting the video. It looks and sounds better on my phone...I'll check the video settings.
Sounds about the same as my car does at the exhaust. I get that 80 lbs of oil pressure too and will hit 90 or so if I rev it up some. Sounds real good. Time to blast down the road!
Haydn works again today.lol He's gotta wait till after work to drive it. (Still needs the grill, bumper, and hood.) Gonna be the longest day ever for him.
Great vids man, now that we can hear and see what's happening, lol. That thing sounds nasty! Job well done I'd say.
Not sure why the video got messed up when i tried to upload them? Oh well thats cool and now you know how to post videos of the upcoming burnouts!!
