Why not put a 455 in it instead? Cheaper, more parts available, more options for transmissions, etc.

Sweet looking car, I've never seen one that color.

Here are some pics of my 64 Special Convertible. 300 cu in V8 2 bbl automatic. It's a 38K mile numbers matching survivor and is unrestored. One repaint in late 70's. Other than doing some intensive cleaning over the past year and a half it's all original. The car has Kelsey Hayes Magstar wheels (introduced in 1965) with the rare tri-bar spinner center caps. Kelsey Hayes wheels are pretty rare for a GM vehicle. The original center caps were in a box in the trunk along with all of the warranty books, repair manuals and the original Buick spinner hubcaps. This Buick has been in the same family for 42 years and in a garage under a cover most of that time, I'm the third owner. I owned one exactly like this 40 years ago and have been looking for a clean original 64 Special Convertible for a number of years now and finally this one became avaliable.

You got to be kidding me!!!

They're only original once. Paint looks real nice.

    I wish I could get a 65 like that.

    Absolutly beautiful.

Can you tell me if that is the original steering wheel? I have a 64 vert as well but mine has a steering wheel exactly like my 65 special HT which is the same as my 65 GS post car and they are different than yours.

    Thank you,
    Gary

Interesting how many of us 64 owners must agree that that big knob grille emblem is ugly and we have taken it off.

NOt trying to discourage you, but putting a 455 in is a much easier and likely cheaper swap unless you can find a gran sport donor car. THe nailhead has the starter on th wrong side and requires a different battery tray and wiring harness. exhaust manifolds are gran sport specific as are motor mounts.

That is one very cool car. That would be a blast to drive.

As for putting a 455 in mine. It would be simpler, and a lot cheaper. But that's not what building a car is about. I got the money from the 67 to get a bunch of this project done, and I just want a Nailhead, and I want the biggest one! It's correct vintage for the car, it's a cool hotrod engine, and it's Buick. You may go to a Buick show and see a half dozen 64 - 65 cars with a big block in them, but probably not a 425! I've got some addional ideas for this car, but we'll take one step at a time. First I've got to get her running fairly well, then buy the engine that I want, then after I get the mounts for the engine and tranny I've got brakes and rear end to work out.

Yes, this is the car from Dallas Oregon, but I didn't end up paying anything near the craigslist price. Plus I saved it. The guy that had it was going to but a Chebby engine in it and there was a kid looking at buying it and doing the same thing to it.

As for D-con, I like my grill! Every one has their likes and dislikes. I think the 64 looks darn good from stem to stern!

Gary, looking at the pictures in the 1964 Buicl dealer book I have shows this to be the correct steering wheel.

The center grill emblem didn't come on the 64 Special, only the Skylark. I agree and like the cleaner look as well. I am a big fan on keeping a vintage vehicle all original.

Hi Joe; Here's mine again. I was taking pictures of it to see the difference in rear heigth. I put in a 2" lift kit as it seem's all 65 Skylarks seem to be ass dragers. Finally got the 350 running, also the overheating problem sloved. I've got the 350-4 High Compression decal on the air cleaner. People were asking what the hell is that? Buick never made an engine like that. Denny Manner came by to help a bit with my over heating problem and I told him about the questions. He just smiled and shook his head. I gotta get over to "The Old Guy's" place and have him help me tune the carb. The weather here has been so guanoie that it's hard to get out. Plus Joe seem's to have a lot on his plate and I don't want to be a pain in the rectal area. Also here's a pic of the emblem I was messing with. I just painted it White and used a paint brush on the raised area. And, no, I don't have the same on the other side. I just wanted to see how it looked...LATER

Ponch your car is an amazing specimen!! Really gorgous dude!! And the paint looks brand new!!

Wish you were closer so I can take it for a nice cruise with flowing hair!!!

I'm not sure how the emblems will be recieved. They look trick!!

I'm into anything different. That's exactly why I don't have torq thrust wheels on my car. Just not my style. I need to be different!!

    So there!:Smarty:

Don't want to put anyone down for their own prefrence, just found it interesting that others were missing too (and learned that Specials didn't have them at-all!).

I'm considering selling my 64; I've just got too many projects. Stage 2 455, 200-4R, 12-bolt, Wilwwod front discs, pretty-much everything but the EFI install completed and 17's to be a pro-tourer, or to be left a sleeper as-is. I just have too many projects and it sits and sits. Makes me sad for her to sit all the time :(

I didn't take offense to what you said or think it was stirring the pot at all. We all like what we like and to me that's part of what makes the car hobby fun. If we all had to try and make them look and act stock I wouldn't even enjoy it. By the time that I'm done with my 64 there is going to be plenty that Buick never did. Some of it plenty noticeable. Like maybe a shaker hood, if I can make it come out good. Probably a nice street rod color to boot.
I like my grill, but it would look good without also. I didn't know that the special didn't come with it either.

Hi Joe; Thank's for the compliments. Doesn't it just scream Mid Life Crisis? Like I said, I was just messing around with the emblem. I'll probably take it back off and stick it back on my garage wall where it came from. You can tell it's the wrong emblem by the partial hole in the pic. I've got a bunch of stuff like that stuck to the wall. Lest there be any doubt about which brand of car I like!
