I bought some good condition ones from a wrecking yard a while ago. The 2.8-3.1 Chevy v6 fit perfectly, the Buick 3800 are too tall. Both require a custom made spider to hold down the guides, and a little smoothing around the tops of the lifter bosses so the guides sit flat. I drew up a couple of spider designs, but I need to un-entomb my welder to make the bracket that would slide into the lifter valley.
2.2 four cylinder lifters are the same as the 3.1(3100) and 3.4(3400) FWD V6 lifters also. Has anyone looked at a Cadillac 4.5/4.9 spider? May be pretty close. Two 86-88 Buick V6 spiders cut and spliced will work. Look at the thread above on BritishV8 for more info.
a big draw back to those factory styke GM lifters are in the actual lift they can run......too much and you run that lifter into the dog bone. and gm lifters like that are not without issue of being noisy just listen to any 3400, 5700, 7400 alot sound ticky. and I have replaced hundreds over the last 20 some years
Here is the old Turbo Buick V6 thread on the factory roller lifters: https://turbobuick.com/threads/fwd-roller-and-non-roller-cam-parts-in-gn-motor-w-pictures.224567/
Agreed, they're not without issues, but neither are the more(l) expensive options it seems. I'm running the roller version of the 212 cam, which has .296 int, .303ex lift at the lobes, plenty of clearance. My idea was to buy a bunch from low mileage, wrecked cars, and run the 16 best ones. If some act up, replacements are everywhere.
The spacing on the 3.8 Buick V6 is the same as the 350 for the dogbones. You have to get two spiders from 86-88 Buick FWD roller cam motors. Use the front 4 lifter spacing off one and the rear four off the other. Where they over lap use a center stud and spacer. On the Buick Turbo V6 thread last page is a motor that has almost .600 lift and races in the 10's. Good oil pressure, 25lbs at idle. Video of his motor:
I've been running a PTE 210 billet roller in my GN for years, I don't remember what type of roller lifters are in it tho.
Oh Boy! I have been off the board for over a year it seems. I had a 455 engine built with Morals and the lifter collapsed on the dyno and that was 4 years ago. TA sent the lifter to Morel and they replaced just one. I had the lifters for over a year waiting to build the engine. I decided a year later to buy newer updated Morels now I see this thread. The engine is still on a stand (yeah I know) but I think I may need to replace them with Johnsons if I read this correctly.
I'd replace the Morels with the Johnsons. Updated Morels?? You have a pic of the old style and updated Morels? Im curious if Marts Morels are the old style, and I have the updated style.
You may be right. Mine were always quiet. They were bought before 2012, possibly 2009. Too bad they're not part or serial numbered.
Well, on a better note, my heads are assembled, crank is done and just time to assemble needed.. everything looks ok.
Wow its been 4 years but here is the post where I asked if anybody had any issues back then. I should note this is on a Big Block. The engine has been dynoed with the replacements and seemed fine. Made 604hp 602 TQ. http://v8buick.com/index.php?threads/ta-hyd-roller-lifters.293849/
