I can handle a non painted one. Beats my cracked and glued one all to pieces!! Also, I can wait 10 months. Let's hear from others now.

    Frank,
The answer to that is no. People are still bitching about the way I painted my repro grills. I did not use all three colors when I painted them, it was too expensive to build such a mask for a part with that low a volume. I left it up to the customer to repaint them correctly.

If you are going to do the grills, my advise would be to paint them correctly and add that cost to the price of the part from the start. I have found that if you don't supply a ready to "bolt on" part you end up limiting your sales drastically.

For me, price is more of a concern than it being painted. So yes, as long as the price is appropriate for the 'condition'.

Thanks Duane I was trying to keep the costs within reason. Frank

Frank, I'd be fine with a repo Grille that I had to paint, I'd rather it be painted but paint wouldn't stop me. After seeing the prices that these grilles are getting I will be sure to buy two....at least two!

I would buy in advance to help get the repo underway. Painted or unpainted, I would buy one.

Having to paint it would not be an issue with me. Allbeit a pain, the hard work of getting it made would be done, painting it would just be my contribution to help it happen, keep costs down. Maybe price them differently painted vs. non-painted should it come to be. I think that would be an atrractive option.

Put me down for one 71 grill, painted or unpainted, or two if the price is right. I would also be interested in a 72 grill. Keep us posted. Thanks to anyone for your efforts in this area.

I'll go with what 70lark said.Plus, I beleive a repo in this case could be made alot stronger than an a orginal. My money is up on the table.

Duane, I think the $2000 grilles have changed what people will accept.

Maybe you could offer it painted & not painted.:Do No:

I don't need one now(mine is in good shape), but I'd get one if someone is going to make a mold, and put it on a shelf...:3gears:

Sorry guys, I didn't mean to stir up this old subject again. Just found the ad amusing since that NOS 71 grille just went for such big bucks a few days ago.

I've offered to help before and will again. I know nothing about plastic injection parts. But if someone who does wants me to look around in China for a factory, that's easily done. I have good contacts for this sort of stuff both through my company and the 'friends' I've got over here. President of China Boeing and Ford are in our golf club for example. I haven't met them but would be possible if there was some business to do.

I wouldn't drop names ordinarily, but I started this again and we've been around in circles about it countless times already. Seems time to either make a decision to do something or quit talking about it.

In my mind, it would be sad if it couldn't be done domestically. Don't know if I could deal with a Chinese-made grill on my American iron.
I know everyone keeps saying that it's a "global economy" but I still would like to support US unless it is a last resort.

Bruce, I'm quite happy not to help if people want USA made parts. The repro made in USA would cost about three times as much but that's a decision somebody else will have to make.

    Guys,
I don't have a problem with parts being made overseas, most of the repro parts for our cars are made there. MY parts are one of the few exceptions to this rule.

I am sticking to my advise that the grills should be offered in a painted form. It will cost less to paint a volume part initially, then to do it by hand. (To mask and paint a 71 grill correctly, by hand, takes around 6 hours.) Plus, the manufacturer will have more control of the appearance of the finished part. Also, many people will not want a part that costs hundreds of dollars to purchase, and then will cost more to have it professionally painted. Many people do not have the skills or patience to do this.

Also, I have always found it easier to sell a finished part then an unfinished one.

    Frank,
I will offer 1 further piece of advice, and then let this topic go, If you are going to do the 70 grills, have them molded in gray plastic and do not put in the thin brace at the front. That is how the originals were built. If you make them look like they did from the factory, people will be more interested in buying the repro's,
even if the NOS replacements start to come out of hiding, and they will.
    Duane

PS. Frank, If you have any questions, or would like to discuss anything, my door is always open.

Painting a 71 GS grill is a real pain. Masking off all the areas to be painted black is extremely time consuming....But, I would gladly buy a repro grill unpainted. I cant wait to take my original grill out of my car and install a repro. Put me down for at least one for sure, maybe two. Maybe then I can relax a little when driving the 71!

I have to say this thread is making me think of not cutting my 71 up yet . I would gladly buy it painted or not . The main question is why don't you repop guys get together and figure it out $$$ wise and put it up on here . You know just come out and say " have to sell 200 Grilles at 500.00 unpainted to get it repoped" Buyers must pay 50%down and put the money in escrow until there is enough there to make it work . Jeez I want to buy one now but I will wait until next year if I had to .
