---How much RPM will it take,.. was my starting thread months ago and here some pics of the project...a little winter reading...
--How fast can we go by throwing off the shelf used parts at a stock 1970 -350 sbb short block without blowing it up,... still experimenting with that part,..LOL
--I didn't want to spend much money like most guy's and looked on this board for used parts and my local craigslist, where I found most of the big parts....
-- First off,.. The short block was never taking apart but was cleaned and painted..the ported heads is a #1 must for waking up any sbb or any motor... but this motor is not the perfect combo..
----ET... 13.24 at 102.2 shifting at 5800 rpm... 60 ft. 1:90's,.. not enough stall for this cam combo... it spun a little and hooked some...weight transfer was not good..
--Parts List,.. 70" big valve ported heads .030 milled off about 50 cc., .020 steel shim head gasket... approx,.. 9:4-1 comp... port matched t/a intake and 1" 4 hole spacer with 850 holley, t/a 310 cam, hooker headers 1 3/4, stock pulleys,.. the small crank pulley in the pics was not used,...Kenne-Bell deep baffled oil pan,
-- Stock 350 trans with shift kit and TCI 3500 Stall , 71' buick-10 bolt posi - 8.5, 3:73 gears, HEI and MSD-6al,.. Auto-Meter Gauges, holley black fuel pump and dash 8 braided line to regulater and carb... and some tuning...never done..
--Work to be done,..cowl hood, remove AC box and replace with ASC fiberglass cover to retain heater also some body work,.. its a 20 footer... LOL
-- This is my sons car and he helped work on it and loves driving it, he also did real well at the drag strip with 9 passes under his belt,....and ready for high school nats in April..2014
---- Hope this helps somebody get started on a 350 sbb--- PS...I would have used a smaller cam but this 310 cam was in my bundled parts craigslist find,.. had to make it work...

    --- :3gears: Racing Video's added on the 2nd page...

    Thanks for listening,.. Jerrold..

I'm sure you can get more out of it before it blows-up, after all, it's the same basic bottom end as a Gran National. (I know about 1,000 people will lynch me for saying that)! I like to recommend a pressure plate for the oil pump. That's a plate that bolts on between the oil pump body and the cover that the filter screws on to. It redirects the oil in the pump and gives the same flow as a high volume pump without the horse power loss.

Phil,.. I do use a T/A oil reg.. set at 80 lbs start up and 25 lbs warm idle oil pressure,.. I didn't think about using the plate and have 2 laying around here,..:Do No:

Steve,.. I live southside of Metro-Airport, about an hour from you,..

Derek,.. glad you liked the post car,... I will try to squeeze some more out of it...LOL

Sounds good, and it wont blow up!
Even if was stock bottomend and nitrogen oxide in the 11s as its been done :Brow:
Just keep your max revs in check if they're stock and not ARP bolts in rods. 5800rpms are no worries :)

That pretty decent times and 102 mph .should be able to break 12s. What is that 3500 stall actually flashing to? 2800?10 in or 9 in convertor? Coan custom would be the way to go.had a tci 10 in 2800 and was a solid 2400 on my engine.what size tire? Maybe smaller tires or 4.10 gears.but I think you need to dump the TCI and get a true 3500 built for your small block not the universal built crap.call Trishield and have Jim build you a convertor.

That 310 cam is making some good power.maybe I will considere putting mine back in.

Andy,.. I'll prob. try a shorter 26" drag radial, that might get the car moving a little quicker and I'll probably keep the converter just for better driving matters on the street... The 310 cam will work with these combo guide lines, but with 10-5 cr. or 10-8 comp. and it will wake the motor up and a loose 3800 torque conv... This TCI conv. flash's at 3400 rpm, but not enough for this combo..

Ron,.. I'll see if I can do the youtube thing,.. thanks

Justin,.. were using a 28" m/t drag radial right now,.. Thanks ,.. the car looks pretty good but my son wants to drop it 1-1/2 in frt. and 2" in the back... it should look good...

As I read through my thread i was thinking is their anything else that would help a new buick guy wanting some performance out of his 350 sbb. and that is the tuning,.. whether a stock motor or even a mild build motor like this one,...
I think most of us guys thats been doing this for a while don't think twice about setting up our distributor in a motor, stock or a modified sbb..

On this HEI I took it apart and welded up the mechanical hole a little to short"n the mech. advance so I could use more initial timing on the crank balancer and recurved the distributor for a total of 32*all in at 2100 RPM... I will be bumping it to 34-36 degrees just to see how it reacts to the combo..
This kind of mod. even on a stock engine, will pickup the performance... It makes the engine a little more snappier on the bottom end...
Doing this dist. modification will put the timing at the crank marks at the 12-14*mark even 16* off the tming tab, there's no marks after 12*...and this sometimes can make the car start a little harder, there is a fine line when doing this mod. but well worth it...

This is where Larrys thread about setting up distributors comes in handy,.. I dont know how to stick that thread on here,..

Also,.. just setting up a 2 1/2 dual exhaust with headers and re-adjusting your carb air fuel mix screws and cleaning it, no matter if its 2 bb.l or 4 bbl. carb.. these things will help...
Then the next best thing is a set of gears for the rear, 3:42 or 3:73 and make it a posi. and then put in a 2800 stall conv.,.. you will never feel the difference between the stock conv. until you stab the throttle.. very easy to drive on the street..

Doing all this without opening up the engine yet will give you alot of fun on the street and track..... anybody else feel free to chime in...

    thanks for listening...jerrold,

Just wondering what head work was done if any... I have a TA 113 cam for my 350 and a converter (that stalled 3800 with a 455) mostly likely will stall less with a 350 but should get the car to boogie !!
