I use prolly all the time. when typing anyway. cause i can never rember how to spell probably. and yes things like what was said, the english language is changing, and has always done so. I have a feeling text online vs verbal spoken word will change.

this kinda [ut there is another one]. reminds me of my grandma, she complains if she is out with her lady friends and the waiter/waitress addresses them by saying Hello guys, what can i get for you. since they're all ladies. IMHO if that is all you have to worry about more power to you. or you need something to do if your taking that much time about it. dont take this as a cut it's just that arn't there better things to think about?

Oh, while we are being super correct-

You don't have a 70' GS455. Nobody does. Nobody has a 57' Chevy either, it doesn't exist as far as I know unless somebody in the limo business has made a world's record attempt

That would be a seventy foot long GS455, and a fifty-seven foot long Chevy. You have a '70 GS455 and a '57 Chevy :TU:

I don't mind that the English language is changing, I just would prefer that it evolve as opposed to devolving on account of laziness or inability to spell correctly. Remember when a school district in Oakland wanted to teach Ebonics as a language!?

I don't normally complain on bulletin boards, but since that is the actual topic of this thread...

It is "I COULDN'T care less" not "I COULD care less." If you could care less, than the spectrum of value of the topic is that it COULD be the most important thing in your life (or not, but we just don't know). If you "COULDN'T" care less, than the topic has absolutely no value to you.

I'm sure there are many who couldn't care less about this thread either.

You must mean me. I use "prolly" when the topic is light-hearted, and probably when I'm trying to be more serious.

You should see how teenagers communicate on AIM-- creative for sure, but what would the English teacher say?

Just occurred to me, JW uses "prolly" ALL the time when he posts here.

I suspect many of the shortcuts guys use are due in part to many of us not being accomplished typists. Hunt-n-peck takes a lot longer with words like "probably". We can't all type 70 wpm. :Comp:

Always amazes me that many, if not most, of the ads I see for soft top cars state that they are CONVERTABLES.

You would think that somebody who owned a CONVERTIBLE and thought that was a major selling feature would know how to spell the word.

thank god, somebody finally did it. been meaning to use those words properly in a sentance for months now just to try to get people to use them right.

    to, two, too,:

lets go to the nats to buy two new mufflers if they dont cost too much.

also, i dont know about all computers, but on mine, if i hit the "enter" button twice it will make paragraphs. this would make some posts easier to read.

ebay spelling is often good for a chuckle. the mopar desota, the chevy camero, and of course the buick grand sport. how does a camaro owner not know how to spell camaro ? its only six letters.

dont want to sound like i know it all. cuz i no eye huv maid sum airors in my spelling too. stepping down from high horse now.

Good Lord, two pages already? I figured I'd get slammed with two responses, and that would be it. I resisted as long as I could!

Hey, I know not everyone spells or types perfectly. I hate making spelling mistakes, but that's just my own pet peeve. I guess I had just seen "prolly" one too many times, and wondered if people were using it as shorthand, or actually thought it was a word. I wasn't lecturing, :Smarty: I was helping!

Language does evolve and change as new words and terms come into useage, such as 'politically correct'. I wouldn't call 'irregardless' a new term, however. It's wrong, period. There has to be a better reason for creating new words than laziness (this means YOU, rappers).

Here's another one that bugs me: saw and seen.
"I seen a cool GSX yesterday."
WRONG! You SAW a cool GSX.

"I have seen cool Buicks in my life."
    Acceptable.

Enough. At least I did get a few responses in agreement, and those of you who disagreed did it with tact. It's been good for a laugh, anyway.

  19. GSJohn

GSJohn BUICK is a beauty too!!

OK, OK,.....If I may get my two, to, too, "scents" in here,.....LOL :Brow:
I have found that people usually write the way they speak, if a person has a higher education, they usually write that way, with higher vocabulary. Whereas, if they have a high school education only,......their communication skills will be less.
I guess that's what makes the world go 'round,..huh?
    :Smarty:
(Now to find the spell check and grammer setting on this here dang computer!)

    Have a great day,......y'all !! :eek2:
