I realize we all have our fortes and weak areas. I know I have mine.

I was just wondering if I should point out that "prolly" is not a word. Neither is "supposably".

    I suppose I will catch h*** now......

I wondered what that was, an honest mistake that everyone took up on or a short cut.- Mike D.

English is a living language. There's words that are in dictionaries now that weren't 100 years ago.

"Irregardless" is the classic modern example. It's in many dictionaries now, but according to the rules of the language, it's technically not a word. But it became such a common usage word that it got into dictionaries.

If you guys think this forum's bad, you should check out the ones in which English is an afterthought or actually where they spend effort breaking it's rules. U no, 71k3 t3h k1dz d0n7 wan7 u 2 no wha7 7h3y m33n, k? lol, k? nuff said11!!11!!

How about "pwned" and 1337? I agree languages are alive, but most of that is just plain on lazy crap. BTW I also hate acronyms.

AFAIK, acronyms are all good. FWIW, I use them all the time. Saves effort, IMHO

    live with it

I say, live with it. If you understand what the person is trying to get across, then what's the prob. In todays society even time issues can affect what people type. I tend to type very quicky and often have typo's and mis-spellings. If it bothers you that much don't read the posts. Plus, you have to consider, not everyone on this board has the same educational backgrounds.

I agree. I got on this board to learn about Buicks and not take english class all over again. Last year, I flew through my typing and didn't worry about typos and misspelled words. This year, I have seen several on here comment on bad grammer and typing errors along with capital letters being used. So, I try to do a little better when posting. That sucks! Why should I worry? If you understand the message, don't bother correcting people. I could call attention to people's defects every day of my life, but I'm not that kind of guy. I reckon ill get hammered now tooooo.

I have no real problem with bad grammar in and of itself, it's just that when a post is so bad, that it makes it almost impossible to understand, those are the difficult ones. Like the ones with no punctuations. You have no clue where to pause and start a new thought. Misspellings I can live with, but no periods drive me nuts, especially when I really care and want to understand what the person is saying.

I am not sure if THEY'RE coming with us.
They brought THEIR dog with them.

The same goes for TO, TOO and TWO.

    You've got to wonder

Sometimes the punctuation, grammer, and spelling are so bad you have to wonder if the writer is in actually still in grade school or if they just don't care enough about how they come across.
It is a very simple matter to just proof read the post before submitting it. :Brow:

Living with someone who loves language...

My wife loves language and it's proper use. I'm getting better but there's still a long way to go. Sometimes I find it annoying when she points out the flaws, most of the time I appreciate the help. Writing in proper sentences and taking a little time to organize your thoughts makes it easier for people to understand you, but it's not mandatory.

I agree with people who don't want to be bothered and I understand people who find mangled language annoying. I'm glad all can express themselves in their own fashion.

Now for a few of my more common mistakes:
I have to remember to talk "about" subjects not to them. As in "Henry here will talk to that point later." Well Henry the point is you should be talking to us.

Begs the question. When something begs the question it is AVOIDING the question not raising it.

    CongraDulations

does anyone know how to stop spelling Mississippissippi....

"You can send an email to Jim and I" is incorrect it should be Jim and me. Take out Jim and you see what I mean, you wouldn't say send an email to I.

I have found that people often judge your intelligence on how you communicate. It's inaccurate but common.
