200 of course much less of a swap and less hacking into your car, remember that these were never installed as oem but can be adapted to work very well but these will never 100% perfect but they do work.

Keep in mind the 700 R4 requires an adapter for the BOP engine pattern. No big deal but noteworthy. For mild engines the 200r4 is fine, unless you drive like me lol...

The 200R4 is a really good swap because the length is the same as the St-300 and th350 trans.

For cars equiped with a th-400 trans the best swap is the 4L80E but this getts pricey for all the electrical stuff.

Art Carr offers a 200 4R tranny that handles up past 450hp for around $1800 plus shipping and I've seen the page in Original Parts Group catalog (California Performance Transmission) has a couple for around the $1300-$1600 price range for 250-400+ horsepower range ...little pricey, but like a Moser axle probably near bulletproof.

Thanks Wayne, the truck has a TH-400 now so I just had another built up that way I could keep the same driveshafts and mounting points, plus cheeper. For a car I'd go with a trans like that art car one though forsure especially in place of a th350.

Remember the 200r4 is in the Grand National. The guy that built mine has his car in the nines so don't count out the 200r4. If you use a billet drum you can use plenty of horsepower. I don't have this in mine but if this part breaks you will not damage the trans except for this part. I have run in the high 11s with mine and I have a full weight car 3800lbs with driver. This has been 2 years now and going on my 3rd. Plus this trans is only a 1/2 inch larger than the 350 trans and bolts right up to everything. The only real modifying that I had to do was with the dipstick from the new trans. It had to be bent a little bit and had to fabricate a bracket to bolt it to the trans to get it out of the way of everything. Oh I had to bend the trans lines a little to fit but that was it.

I'm in re-assembly stage on my P*ntiac (check the progress in the link in my signature) and the Jeep is waiting till next summer when I can take it off the road for upgrades.

    Yep.
I'll probably start back in on the 2004r in a few weeks. Maybe put a few go fast parts in it, whatever I can afford to do. I bought a valve body from a 700r4e or 4L60E, whatever. It doesn't look real simple to graft the solenoids onto the 2004r valve body, but I'm still thinking about what can be done to change this auto into a manual, part time.

Don't forget the Gear Vendor overdrive which can be bolted onto a TH 350 or 400

I've had good luck with my TCI Streetfighter 200r4. Except for the CK performance converter crapping out and the TV cable seal going out. :puzzled:

I am eagerly looking forward to trying out a 4L60 which came out of a caprice taxi of 1990 vintage with 500,000 KM (trans was rebuilt I am sure). It has none of the computer that the 4L80E has and worked easilly with propane conversion where as a 4L80E (unless going with manual valvebody) would have needed mods to retain with the propane.

There's differing opinions on which tranny is better, 700r4 of 200r4, even in the professional world of high performance transmission rebuilders.

Check this article out from Popular Hot Rodding(2/2009) on 700R4's:

    http://www.popularhotrodding.com/tech/0902phr_1975_chevy_laguna_700_r4_transmission/index.html

In the latest Car Craft magazine(3/2009) there is a very good article on rebuilding 200R4's by Art Carr from www.cpttransmission.com who proclaims it the best OD transmission. It is not on line yet.

Both are good reading if you're really interested in finding out their good and bad points.

I'm wondering why this is in the small block area and not the transmission area. I think it should be moved over there.

I have a 3spd 200 gm transmission and want to replace it with a 2004R 4spd. Will I have to cut or extend my driveline?

According to TCI they will have a manual valve body available for the 4L80 transmission this quarter. I believe an adapter plate is needed (and a ratchet shifter), but as Sean said, it's still an "easy" swap for a TH400.

There are manual valvebodys out now, now sure who from though off the top of my head... There is a guy on the board who made paddle shifter buttons on his steering wheel to manualy shift his 4L80E! He sounded willing to help others set it up!

I received my transmission adapter kit for my Buick 215 bolt pattern to GM turbohydromatic from Kennedy engineered products (KEP) yesterday...

So yes you 215 guys can run an OD trans..
I plan on running 2004R as well.

Hoffbug, are you putting 200-4R in a stock bodied 61, 62, 63 Buick? What body mods are required?
