hey Frank, remember me? I was the first reply to this thread. It looks like you are having too much fun now!! I just had to ask, are you keeping a record of the hours? If so, how many so far?

wow....that was you...you gave great advice...and very true

no i didnt keep tabs of hrs...but for the amount of time i spend in garage I get plenty done....I work after my real job after 9pm everyday..I dont have visitors or distractions...so its constant..i get lost in it sort of to say....sometime I spend 4-5 hours after work bcs i lose track of time...no clocks in garage...just like Vegas... :bglasses:

Good for you :beer sounds like you are really enjoying the work! I never count hours either unless someone is going to pay me by the hour... I think it's funny when I hear some people say, "I can't, I don't have the time." Then they sit there and watch TV every night for 4-5 hours. :Dou:

well....got the passenger side all stripped ..was surprised 2 find some more bondo on the 1/4's....looked 2 good 2 have any...surprise surprise.....seems someone mudded up a few dents and dings....we can pop them out and grind and use way way less bondo... :Dou: also am amazed at how well paint stripper takes off/dissolves bondo......havnt been using the da sander at all....only hand sanding .....noise travels at night...and late night is all my garage time..cant get the neighbors mad...

practiced mig welding lastnight....3 hrs of welding abtract art on the bench...and I still weld like crapola.....pop zap snap burn through.... :Dou: :(

go slow go fast..steady hand...spot at a time..different speed different power settings.. different wire size...different tensions....less gas more gas..read the book..those weld patterns they show are not in my garage.....turn the lights off in garage...watch the welding video that comes with it,, again....go 2 bed.... :Dou:

what the heck am i doing wrong?

Well without being there its pretty tough to see whats going on. Just keep practicing, make sure the metal is clean, might help to back it up to help prevent blowing through. Start cold and work up (you'll know because no penetration)....welding is one of those things that looks really easy but is not necesarily so.

    Keep on pluggin...

    later

Frank, I'd recommend one of those vocational ed classes at community colleges. the time you waste doing it wrong makes up and pays for the time it takes and knowledge gained and spending in learning to do it right.

last week I went and ordered a Tabco quarter panel for the drivers side..thinking that we can toss on while shell is on rottiserie.......but I asked a few pro's from here about changing a quarter panel while shell was on rottiserie...and they said No No....shouldnt do ..has 2 be on frame...and on ground.....I have frame all apart of its components....to much to do for putting it back on frame now....kind of like point of no return ...next time the shell hits the frame will be next year maybe...

so the quarter is comming anyway...so i figure i cut it up for patching ..kind of a shame isnt it......and whats realy ashame is that I sold my original whole rear section with nice 1/4's before I stripped and anylized...should of hanged on a bit... :Dou: never fails ...its the fault of the person that bought it..

here is a pic of that delicate body line comming off the point off the fender lip...(uh what line :Dou: )...its been smacked in the past....its crumpled up...pic dont show exact...this is the worst part of the shell...

also exact patch i can use here as well....and maybe cut up just a bit larger

Last nite ..within 10 whole minutes...Rexxy became a professional mig welder...scratch that more like an instructor of mig welding... :Dou: :Dou:

my neighbor walked in on me in my garage while I was practicing welding a bit..snappin poppin all over the place...started a cardboard box on fire...

he unplugged the mig and said something is completley wrong...took him 20 second 2 figure it out...the spool that the wire rides on the groove was for the larger wire.....ME STUPID...it was so simple...we flipped it around for my size wire (.25).....he said try it...."OMG "BY GEORGE I THINK WE GOT IT"

this thing welds smoooothy smooth...now I see what they mean by puddle

OK.who need some quarter panels welded on...stop on by...I'm ready now !!

I know of a shop that took in-excess of one thousand hours (1000) to do paint and body work on a car that was already dissassembled. The car was returned to the owner two years later as a partially assembled rolling chassis. The owner then did the entire restoration himself.

The shop also charged another person approx. $800 to remove the front trim from a 65 GS. :Do No:

The shop does not own a hoist and a large part of the facility is unheated with dirt floors and has no storage shelving. :puzzled:
