I agree, it should be part of the discussion, and it will be once all of the facts are known. We don't know yet whether his mother secured them inadequately, or not at all. One thing is sure, she paid with her life, and was her son's first victim. From what I have read, he shot her several times in the head while she was in bed.

    You know you're right.
Just before I logged on to the site, I was on line looking at buying a gun safe. I'll probably go get one tomorrow.

I too agree. Part of responsible fire arm ownership is to assure, as best as one can, that their personal fire arms are not accessible for irresponsible use by others. I am not opposed to a law requiring it, so long as the penalty for violation stops short of that of complicity to the actual crime committed by the irresponsible party.

Additionally, fire arm security should be taught as a part of all fire arm training courses.

Well, they also defend themselves with full-on machine guns, hand grenades, flme throwers, land mines, and a variety of other lethal devices, and for some reason we as a society see the value of infringing on the second amendment by banning possesion of those things too. So yeah, I would have no problems telling a vet he can't use his arsenal after he gets home, assault rifles included.

My post that you quoted clearly says"assault style rifle" in quotes. The reason I worded it like that is because thats the title that has been put on some firearms similar to the one used in this terrible tragedy. Not grenades or flame throwers, etc,,,

The right to live free has been and still is defended with firearms among many other things by people from this country. Free people.

And when they start looking for people to go around and tell any free American they cant keep their guns, I wont be submitting a resume.

I could not have said this better.

had he ever showed a danger before. he had used these guns for years without incident. he never showed signs of being lethal till that day. you cant read minds otherwise we would never have murders, suicides, rapes or any crimes really.

Can you show me where you got this information from? Seems to me that this person was deeply disturbed for years, and lots of people noticed.

Human beings are social animals. I think if a person is isolated for long enough, they snap.

90% of hospitals that served the mentally ill are now closed.

The ability to get some admitted to a hospital for mental health issues is close to impossible.

Most of the homeless people you see living on the streets have mental ilness.

I believe that the mother of the shooter was very protective of her son, and she knew that he had real issues.

Unfortunately, she did not get him the help that he needed.

It is really, really sad to have those kids taken in that manner.

from everything i read he was autistic but never had been violent or anything and had used the guns also.

that article said he was weird is all i see people saying. alot of kids not in clicks are classified as weird. i was by some kids even. i own guns i didnt go shoot up a school. but it says nothing about him being violent and wanting to kill someone. his uncle is a pd officer and didnt notice it and saw him everyday. all ive heard is we need to do this do that. it would still be the same ending. its a very sad situation and thats it. we can look back pick it apart but nothing would have stopped it aside from dropping him before he made it in the school or shot the first child. he lost it had issues no one knew the depth of.

He had Asperger syndrome, a disorder related to Autism. It is characterized by significant difficulties in social interaction. If you read the link in my last post, Adam Lanza did not feel pain in some instances. He had to be watched all the time. His difficulties isolated him from the rest of the world. My point is, that if you took a completely normal person, and isolated him totally, it would just be a matter of time before that person went insane, and became violent. Most autism can be treated. Adam Lanza wasn't getting the treatment he needed. I don't know why that was. His mother and father were very well off. Nancy Lanza's alimony payments approached 300,000.00.

The kid was mentally ill, and had violent tendencies. His mother told the babysitter not to turn his back on the kid Why?because the mother knew the kid was mentally ill and violent yet still thought that it was a good idea to teach him how to fire a gun.

Unless you are a doctor, you don't know it's the same thing, and you don't know if they are ticking time bombs either.

We both know that neither of those things will happen. It would be nice if we could somehow come up with a list, like the "no fly" list, and keep crazy people from buying guns. I'm sure someone will say this will not work, so lets just accept the fact that every so often, lots of people are going to die, and there is nothing we can do about it.

I will tell you all one thing for sure, this tragedy has proven one thing, that there is still so much good in this world. My wife and son and I took a ride to Newtown yesterday and visited the Town Hall. They were doing an all day prayer vigil. There were so many people, so many memorials, flowers and people from all over the country sending food gifts and prayers for all the families. Pretty emotional. Larry I completely agree with you that when sick people "caged" or kept away for too long will indeed snap. I am not sure what really happened, but yesterday proved to me that we are still a nation of love and care and genuion support for our neighbors near or far.

I just noticed this thread. It's six pages. I don't blame anyone for trying to make sense of the tragedy, but what good comes from making sense out of nonsense?

The truth is that we don't know what happened, we don't know the circumstances of the shooter or his mom . . . nothing!

So why spend so much energy speculating without all the facts? In this age of the Internet, where information trickles into the public domain, there often are inaccuracies because media outlets want to be first with the news. Hell, even the police are guilty of this, thinking the killer was the brother! It serves no good purpose to speculate what happened without all the facts - it's just needless drama to keep us distracted from other things while giving morons (politicians, NRA, talking heads, etc.) the pulpit.

It would be nice for the above to address the real problems we are having in the US.

Not only is this an important issue, but it's winter. This car-oriented forum is dominated by northeastern members, and it's winter. There is less car related stuff to talk about.

No, but future crazies might. My point is that we should do everything possible to prevent crazy people or criminals from buying guns. Will it work 100% of the time? No, it won't, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't try to do everything possible, and we haven't. 40% of guns sales take place with no checks whatsoever. If that is the case, why have any checks at all?
