    No air cleaner for me.......
My buddy copied my set-up for his 72 'Lark that sees alot street duty and he sets a 14''x4'' element on the plastic then a regular aircleaner lid on top.

Gary;I hear ya as far as the pan goes, but understand my GS is a Streetcar,If I secured the foam to the underside of the hood I'd be screwed in the rain, not that I drive in the rain, unless it's unavoidable.I carry a stock carb filter base and a plug for the scoop with me at all times, that way if it does rain,I can quickly change bases and plug the scoop, thereby stopping rain from entering the carb and allowing flowing air from the engine compartment into the carb.I hope your understanding what I'm describing it's hard without pic's,but like I said my hood is being painted.,so I can't show any pictures of my system at the moment.
The extra carb base and scoop plug came in real handy on the 3 1/2 hour ride home in the rain from the Cecil County Meet!
I've admired your system from previous posts and always liked it,I will improve on my own set-up with time.I'm sure you know it takes awhile to figure out new ideas and concepts. Thanks for the tips and interest .Merry Christmas:TU:

I understand what you're saying Kenny.
I only have foam at the rear and two sides,So even with the scoop plugged the car would run fine.

Thanks for the info, Kenny (& everyone else...) When K & N came out with the filter top it got me thinking about going this route--- I'm not alone, of course!!!!

Having VFN secure the scoop w/ Kens measurements (I have the B4B) then cut the hole inside the bracing myself looks like the way to go.....then fool around with the filter top and some kind of seal....Hmmmmmm...

    I love this board :beer

    Dan,
Now your getting it.I don't think there is a Set rule for this kind of fabrication, everybody has different intakes, carbs, filters, etc. Just to get the basics down, scoop placement. Then it's up to the individual set up where you begin to fabricate what you need for your own system. What does help is everybody's input on the subject, which makes this board so valuable every input can be looked at and evaluated to get a better understanding of what can and cannot be done.
Just another reason to support this board!
The information here is unreal,it's like sitting around with everybody in the country at once BSing. about Buicks!

AMEN, Kenny---- There is ALWAYS something new to learn about these cars, or a new spin on something related to them, no matter how long you've been into them, and this board REALLY does that in a big way....It is nice to see the different approaches to these scoops-- the need for a filter really affects what you have to work with....

Looking forward to some pics when the hood is painted, Kenny... like to see your plug for the scoop, too.....

Like to know your thoughts/ see pics of these with the K&N top, anybody.......

    Dan,
As soon as I get my hood back I will take a lot of detailed pictures to show everyone my set-up!
    I know a picture is worth a 1,000 words.
It may take another month or so,I told my painter I was in no hurry,I kinda regret that now.
    To be continued-----:Smarty:

When I get my Kenne Bell scoop I got a skylark hood to bolt it right up to. They look soooo sweet sitting on a Buick A-Body.

    Glad to help Bruce....
Phil is going to get the same good-looking set-up.
I'm making him a clear airpan next week.
I've got a nice template so that use a router for a very clean looking edge.
I even drilled holes in the edge of mine to hold spark plugs.

Gary, do you make them up so that you can use an airfilter for street driving? If you do I would be interested in one also, thanks.

    Phil,
It,s funny you started this thread 10 days ago and nobody has given you a Direct answer yet!!
I know someone gave a measurment from the front of the hood, but you asked from the back.
From my own experience,I asked the same question last year and I had VFN mount my scoop on a new fiberglass hood 12" from the Rear of the hood to the Rear of the scoop,if I had to do it again I would add a 1/2 or 1" to that,as you stated the scoop slopes down at the rear.
Alot depends on what intake, carb and filter you'll be using as clearence comes into the format.
After mounting the hood,I had to figure out how to seal it and what size filter element would fit,I like to use a K&N and the bigger[taller]the better. What I ended up with was a sealed scoop with a 5" tall 14"diameter K&N filter with thier filtered top[I forget the name].That is after I tried different carb spacers and different K&N filters.
Know anyone who needsa a 6"X14" K&N filter??cost $55.00 will sell for $35.00 plus shipping?

    No problem Rob....
My buddy has the same set-up as me on his 11.40 72 'Lark.(street driven, aircleaner and all)
I'll try to arrange for some photo's of his this weekend.

And don't worry about Phil.....We'll have that overweight Conv. in the .70's this coming Spring!

THANK YOU!!!! THANK YOU!!!! THANK YOU!!!! Someone finally answered my original question.:beer

Anyway, I am going over to Gary's sometime in the next week or so to peak at his setup. I'll definitely be running a 3-4" element with my "plexi-pan" (HEY, maybe that can be it's name when you start selling them through Summit, Gary!!). My car is street-driven a lot. I am considering doing what Gary did and put the foam on the hood, not the plexiglass. We'll see how it goes.

I'll also be carrying some kind of plug for the scoop in case I should get caught in the rain. Hey, wait a minute, wouldn't that make the car have a "water injection" system???:pp

11.70's? YEA BABY!!:3gears: I wonder if they'll let me make a pass with the top down??
