It was stated that he tried to get full coverage and it would have cost the value of the car (~ $2,000) every year so his decision was to only cover it with liability. I cant say I argue with that decision either - I dropped the collosion on my RoadMonster once its value went below 5K. At that point its a disposable car to me BUT I still carry fire/theft/vandalism/glass I have full coverage on BigRed with an appraised value of 25K (a few years old - been meaning to have it reappraised), second car use only (not for work but OK for anything else) and Im the only driver - it costs me $1400/yr. so I dont think it would be a stretch to say 2k/yr for upping that to first car status - if they would write the policy... I've had it this way for years because I want to be able (and often times do) use the car anytime/anyplace I want - zero restictions other than not to work on a daily basis.
Alan, you're paying too much. I have a policy with ANPAC with four cars on it. Stated/appraised values $15k, $33K, $19K, and $101K. Full coverage, BI 250/500k, PD 250k, Uninsured 250/500k, Comp $500 ded, Coll $500 ded, Medical $5k. Total for all four cars is $438 for six months. It is a pain to keep them happy with appraisals and pictures, but worth it.
Here's the deal with the insurance. The car only had liability on it, meaning what ever I hit, my insurance will pay for. That is the minimum requirement in California. When you're going to school living on a student loan, you are not too fat. But I wanted to keep my dream alive and have an old classic American car. The liability insurance cost me something like $800 for a year, and it was alot more for full coverage. If you then have a car for $2000, you can't really justify a huge insuarence cost on it. I knew I took a chance, I knew that every day. The car took a few hits in the last few years by other people, and maybe it was just a matter of time before something really bad happened. Maybe I misjudged the value of the time I put into the car, but when you're living barely paycheck to paycheck, often selling Buick parts on Ebay that you would much rather sell for a decent price to someone here, just to pay next month's rent, then full coverage insurance is a little down the list. This is Los Angeles, and not a small town in I don't know where, where you can have full coverage, rent, etc. for little money. I like where I live, lots of stuff goes on here, but I paid the price for it too. If I could have afforded to have full coverage, of course I would have gotten it. If I could have afforded a garage for it, I would have gotten it. Having your car burned down by someone who sets the trash on fire is probably something like 100000:1, this was just my bad break.. Hopefully I am a little better prepared next time.
Kimson, I was just noticing since Alan is in his 40s and I'm in my 50s that we should be getting similar prices on insurance. He seems to be paying a lot more than I do. Wasn't suggesting that you can get those rates. I recall when I was in my 20s way back in the mid 70s... I had a 65 Corvette when I was 22. I was paying over $100 per month insurance when I only grossed $9600 per year salary. It was brutal and I don't think I had full coverage. I hated it. Anyways, what you decided to do for insurance (to me anyhow) isn't the point. There's a few of us here going to help you get another car. That's all it is. Hope you find a good replacement that makes you happy.
Mike - you cant compare Long Island NY insurance to some farmland in MS - I think we're the 2nd or 3rd highest nationwide ratewise (not that Im proud of it ) heck, my rates went up over $300 just moving from Nassau to Suffolk and Suffolk is more rural ou: Kimson - you do what you have to do ...as long as its in a BUICK :beer
It was finally time to eat, and to try to think about something else than the insurance situation, this all feels like it's besides the point. It's been a long day, and I guess I'll have to mention the setbacks first. We get to the tow yard (-$461), and someone has snagged the emblem from the front of the hood. I had some kind of plan to cut a small piece of the hood out with the emblem on, and keep in the garage as a memory of the car, but I guess we can't have it that way. Then Mr. AAA arrives and is the worst idiot I have ever come across. First thing he yells out, I won't take it, AAA don't take burned cars (like it would matter to him). We had already explained the situation over the phone to the AAA operator. This guy just wasn't interested in getting paid or something. He then starts saying he wants a hundred bucks to tow it, and I'm the boss da da da . This goes on and on and we are on the phone with AAA again to sort this, and at the end this guy leaves with a F U following him, and Lisa is in tears, and we have to wait for another AAA guy. This was like you were deep in South America somewhere, totally nuts. Next guy is super cool, picks it up and takes it to Galpin Auto Sports, where they shot Pimp My Ride. Nick White really came through for us, he's there waiting, checks us in, sets up a spot, super cool :beer .. A huge break in this madness. What a place, you should really go there to check out their show room :eek2: .. The wrenching begines and I have so far collected: Four note horns Two 15*7 Rallye rims Seven blade fan Exhaust manifolds Rear axle Custom air filter box 1 headlight bezel. Tomorrow I'm going back for the rear lights, sending unit, and Nick White will get both bumpers as cores for his car. I'm not sure about the engine yet, I don't have a cherry picker, so I'll have to research this a bit more. I would also need some help by someone who has made such an extraction before. Here's the car out on the street waiting to be pickd up by AAA.
So it begins. I thought I didn't really have much to loose, so I cut a hole in the core support to have easy access to the engine if we grab it.
Camp "save what you can".. That's my pickup I bought when gas hit $3. I Found the rims at the yard, helps the looks of that one quite a bit.
What do you think guys, is it worth it? The air cleaner was off when I first saw it, I'm not sure if it swallowed some water or not.
I sawed off the top control arms, I'm just amazed by the power that battery powered reciprocating saw has. That made the extraction a little easier, and quicker.
Kimson, are you going to keep those parts to use again, or part it out? If the latter, put me in line for those four-note horns! Frank
Change the oil and filter and start it up before it's in too many pieces. Even video it running; you can sell it for much more that way. :TU:
X2. You might want to turn it over with the plugs out, 1st just incase there is water in the cyls. It would be good to fire it anyway, it will burn out any residual moisture.
Hey Kimson - first off, good luck with this. I hope the funds continue to flow in to help you out. I am very glad we're off the insurance issue. ChinaMike nailed it. That's not what this is all about. We're here to help a bud who needs help. Not matter the reason help is needed. You're a stand up guy and the truth is, you're first in line to help with advice and guidance when one of us has needed it. You didn't ask for this to happen and you didn't ask for us to help. Both just happened. Keep us posted on what your plans are. Seems there may be a few options for you, but I say take your time and see where this goes. If you part her, there are plenty who need this and that. Keep us in the loop. I'd save them for now... at least till you decide what to do. And Turbo, for the record, if you're ever dealt a raw hand and need help... let us know. I'd pony up to help you out too! Time to go cruise a bit boys. See ya.
