Dee, I won't be able to be there, and I certainly can't speak for others, but I don't think you understand - for a gearhead like me, taking a look at your car would be a PART of the fun, fellowship, and food (well, maybe not food, but...). It's a sickness, I know, but heck, I'd get a kick out of being part of a 'pit crew' figuring out what's up with your car. :beer

As far as you being a pain, well, I ain't seen any of that yet.

Didn't make it to Chucks. Was going to bring the GS but got busy working on it and didn't realize it was already 5:00 p.m. :ball:

I have a new Stage 1 line but it runs a little too close to the motor for my liking right now so I didn't put it on.

I have my stock metal line from the pump rerouted away from the engine way out front of everything. It does have some rubber line from the end of the metal line to the carb since I have an Edelbrock on it with an external filter. The rubber line is not touching anything.

I know for sure it's not the fuel pump. Maybe my car doesn't run in the 11's and 12's because it's not getting enough fuel! :Brow: :Dou:

If it doesn't pour rain like our last Temple event at the first of the year, I'll be taking the GS to Rusk.

I'm trying my hardest to be a pain. I've found being a pain is one of the things I do best! :beer

My first run in the car, without even trying, spinning 1/2 way down the track in Temple, I ran a 14.5! After that, everything went downhill! :moonu:

How much clutch dust in the pan is too much?

Sounds like a problem that can be resolved to me. :TU: Did you have them replace the filter and fluid. How much dust was in the pan?

New filter and fluid. Fluid looked excellent before it was changed. The guy said it looked good too, until we dropped the pan.

Lots of grey goo in the bottom. Stick your finger straight down in it and in places it was 1/8 inch thick.

Little bit of metal shavings but not too bad. Filter had a few shavings on it.

When I've seen goo like this before, it was only a matter of time..... :ball:

Transmission is not slipping (and wasn't slipping before) but I'm sure it will be by the end of the trip.

And no, I didn't go to a transmission shop. I hate transmission shops! :af:

Almost forgot to ask....and how can this be resolved? Tranny rebuild = $$$$$

Dee, Clutch dust in the pan is not the best sign. It is telling you that your 2-3 clutches are about to fail or have failed many times than not due to overheating. I hate to say this but your on the verge of a rebuild and may be the reason for the way the car ran as a whole. Hope this helps.

I asked the guy that did the service about excessive fluid temp. being a cause for failure of clutches/bands, etc. and he said no???!!!! :Do No:

Are you talking about fluid temp. overheating or clutch overheating from excessive use like racing, etc.?

Overheating is usually measured by the fluid temprature. Fluid Temprature is the #1 falure of clutches in a transmission this is according to my uncle who owns a transmission shop.

    That's what I thought.

I asked the guy that owned the shop if hot fluid from the lines running right on the headers would cause the gunk in the pan because of high temps in the transmission causing premature wear (reason why I put an external cooler on the car recently) but he said he didn't think the lines being right on the headers would do that. :eek2:

That's what I get for having a Dodge guy do some work for me. Seems like since he owns a Viper, he'd be a little smarter. Guess just because you own a fancy car it doesn't mean you know everything. :puzzled:

Dee, I wouldn't worry about your trans. Grey goo in the bottom of the tranny pan isn't that big a deal, I've seen them with twice that much and they were still working fine. If your fluid doesn't look or smell burned and the tranny isn't acting up, then I'd keep on driving it without worry. Since your trans cooler lines aren't right up against your headers, I wouldn't worry that much about it - if you're concerned, you can get a trans temp gauge in there pretty easily. Since you've got the cooler in the radiator plus an extra one, I'll bet your temps are fine.

Edelbrock carb? Well, there's your problem - you need a Q-jet! :Smarty:

I did some talking about the goo also to the shop. They say it is pretty standard to see goo on the bottom of the pan. :TU:

The transmission lines to the cool ARE ON the headers. Smashed against the headers. :eek2:

I bypassed the cooler in the radiator to stay away from the engine heat.

I was going to get some super-dooper transmission lines to run through the frame but I got the wrong kind of cooler to use the lines with. The lines use AN fittings. Didn't know about the lines until AFTER I bought and installed the cooler. :Dou:

I know I need a Q-jet. I've got one ready to send to John O., but I need to save up the money. Plus I need a computer at home. With the way my jobs are going on the GS, I'm ready to stop feeding it $$$$$ and buy something I want, like a computer. :af:

This was quite a bit of goo in the pan. I've seen goo but this was a lot.

HEY PHIL, can you e-mail me please? I had another bout of stupidity last night and need some advice. :ball:

    Dee
I will be bringing a spare, known good, Q-jet and at least one spare, known good, distributor. Bring the metal Stage 1 line from the pump to the carb. We can use it with the Q-jet and get rid of the rubber line. I'll have all my diagnostic stuff--timing light, multimeter to check for voltage to the dist, etc.
Like James said, working on someone's car is just as much fun as racing. Hell, I can race any week; don't get to help someone with their Buick that often.

Lastly, I don't think 1/8" of sludge is very much... I'd say pretty typical.

When I put in the 455 about three years ago, I pulled the TH350 along with the engine. After draining and pulling the pan, there was what I would consider a lot of silver-ish goo in the bottom. The fluid was normal though, so I ended up just cleaning it up and putting in a new filter and fluid.

This was three years ago, prior to having a 455 in place, and prior to countless shreddings through the gears with a 455. I keep my fingers crossed every day, but it still shifts just as hard as it did three years ago.

Hopefully I have not just jinxed myself and it blows up in Rusk :Dou:.

Hey Phil -- How many Buicks are you expecting at this bash? Does not seem to be as much buzz about this one on the board. I am not having much luck stirring up the troops on my end. Will probably just be me and another Olds dude that lives in Rusk.

Well, my car just stopped working again at lunch :Dou:. Been fighting some electrical gremlins the last week. Hopefully will get it going again by Sat. However, I will probably head out a little later than you guys, assuming I can get the POS to work.
