I hope you meant the "right" amount of RTV. Put too much and it can cause problems.:Smarty:

If you are handling iron manifolds by yourself, you better be extremely careful. I cannot imagine how much it would suck to have back problems later in life.:idea2:

Yep, that's how it starts alright. I remember it well. There is an important point though, and the more you go past it the worse your back will be later on. Problem is, you don't know where that point is, and if you find it by going past it, well then the damage is already done and it's cumulative. You only get one back. You'd be well advised to treat it like you hope for it to last 100 years.

I gotta be "the other guy" here. Do any of you guys do physical labor or hit the gym? It's 50 lbs we're talking about here. He ain't lifting the block out just the manifold.
Don't worry kid, lifting something heavy won't kill you- Have at it! :beers2:

I see you're still bulletproof. Well good for you! I hope it lasts you a real long time. For most of us though all that youthful indiscretion starts to catch up around 50 or so. Gotta be mindful of the odds, even if you do manage to beat them somehow. Considering how far you have to stretch out to lift that 50 lbs, well it isn't just a matter of lifting 50 lbs then is it? The tricky part is putting it back. An engine hoist can make that a perfect job. Can straining muscles do as well?

Yes it is heavy, and it is very awkward to put back on. What I do, is sit up on the radiator cover with my feet on each inner fender, and put it on from there. Never had a problem. Leaning over the fender is a bigger strain on your back. It's doable, but not advisable.

Larry, when your an XXL size, your method is somewhat more problematic. My concern would be radiator survival if my butt was parked there.

Actually, I road bike, mountain bike, coach ski racing, ski race, water ski, roller blade, wind surf and do some yoga. I also spent 6 months in rehab for my back so I could keep doing all of this. Turned 59 on Sunday and few 20 year olds can keep up with me.

I know you just having a little fun here but backs are not anything to screw around with. It is just a terrible technique to reach out and lift that way. It will only be a matter of time before the age god will reach out and make you suffer. Best of luck and I will send you the name of a good looking therapist.

ALLRIGHT you guys win. Ade- You're 17 right? - Which, I am sure by this time in life you have amassed 10-20K in tools and equipment as well as your own shop to do all this work. You really should be using the hoist. I am sure you have one right there, next to your pipe bender and shop press.:Dou:
Guys, I really am not trying to pick fights here - but if what I just wrote sounds rediculous, re-read your posts! -He is 17, working on the car in his driveway with no help!!! YES he should be careful- when lifting heavy objects- but he has 10 wrenches 2 screwdrivers and lots of ambition. Lets not Mother Hen the kid to death here.
At 40 I too have some back problems (and 2 shoulders in need of surgery), comes with the territory of being a do-it-yourselfer or a guy who works with his hands for a living(that includes the back, knees, and any other part that'll give you aches and pains)

Me too...as others have mentioned, I try to climb right in the engine bay & lift without reaching. The key is having a friend standing by for the handoff, keeping all the sheet metal in its original shape!

Since everybody is pickin' on you...

I agree with you. I took mine off once and I don't really remember the experience. It was a non-event. As I posted earlier, I think it's about like changing a tire.
