That’s great. In our state that is not what we were taught in class. Especially if the glove box doesn’t have a lock on it.

Guys, can we all agree that ANY amount of innocents killed by criminals with guns is unacceptable? Clearly, what we currently have in place is not working. We need imaginative new ways to deal with what is clearly a National problem. That is the job of our legislators, and will require a lot of hard work, compromise, and thinking outside the box. If you believe the polls, a clear majority of the American people favor doing SOMETHING. Failure is not an option, as we all know, G-d forbid, that one day, it might be one of us, or someone we love. I hate to think that it will take that to change a person's perspective.

I’m not surprised as Florida is pretty well known as a very “gun friendly” state anyway.

"can we all agree that ANY amount of innocents killed by criminals "by any means" is unacceptable"?

Mild change to what Larry wrote above to be more inclusive;)

But yes. True. As far as I know you can carry in the open, say on the front seat. In your vehicle without a ccw. In our state it’s called the castle law. I do know some truckers that do this.

Yes John, dead is dead, and the means will matter not when it affects one of us directly. I'm trying to be serious, and you can't help but poke me, right? It's not a laughing matter.

Red flag laws- someone reports you anonymously to the police saying your a danger to yourself or others. Maybe it's just someone who's pissed off at you.

The police come to your door and confiscate your weapons. Then you have to petition the court to prove your innocence.....not how it works in the US. You want to confiscate my personal property? Go to a judge, tell him what you want and why you want it, and let him sign it. Then come to my house with a warrant.

Just like I believe people on the terrorist watch list should be allowed to purchase a firearm..

Even in NY, the red flag laws were deemed unconstitutional. Even in NY....damming. Thank God for due process

Define "compromise" Larry as it pertains to gun laws

No, you are trying to draw me into this dumpster fire of a thread. Something you always try to do:). You do realize I am ignoring the group text where you try to do the same thing?

Nice try Clem, but I'm not biting.:)

Compromise- to settle a dispute by mutual concession. Key word being concession. We always seem to be the ones conceding. The other side gives up nothing. Thst is not compromise

I do kind of agree with some group's opposition to Red Flag laws. I think that is a far far more slippery slope than trying to ban the latest high-tech weapons.

I base my opinions on gun owners on the actions of the NRA, and from what I've seen over the years there is no concession. At all. Even over things you would think are common sense. The NRA lobbyed and got repealed a law that prevented the mentally ill from getting guns is the most glaring example off the top of my head.

Hard to prove US Citizens are the ones bringing in fentanyl if reliable factual reports are dismissed out of hand, but...
    • United States citizens comprised 86% of fentanyl trafficking convictions in 2021.6 1,322 of the 1,533 charged fentanyl trafficking offenders were US citizens.7 Even the CATO Institute, a libertarian think tank, acknowledges this point. In fact, just 0.02% of people arrested by Border Patrol for illegally crossing possessed fentanyl.8
    • More than 96% of fentanyl seizures along the border since the start of fiscal year 2023 have been at legal US ports of entry.9 Fentanyl is rarely carried over the border through the desert. It’s being smuggled across legal points of entry inside seat cushions, car batteries, even inside the metal frame of a walker.

I agree about red flag laws. Although I oppose the slippery slope of banning guns with specific features for several reasons, we did it once and it was a national statute with no grey area. A red flag law is much, much more subjective and every single decision would hinge upon an individual judge’s opinion of another person’s statements and an individual’s rebuttal. These individual judges might let their personal beliefs influence their judgement. Combine that with ‘abundance of caution’ and maybe mix in ulterior motives and a fellow might never get his guns back.
Two very significant Supreme Court decisions regarding 2A were prompted by individuals’ behavior and personal opinions regarding guns (NY Rifle and Pistol and Heller).

From the Cato institute, which is a pretty middle-of-the-road / left-right kinda place

Fentanyl overdoses tragically caused tens of thousands of preventable deaths last year. Many politicians who want to end U.S. asylum law claim that immigrants crossing the border illegally are responsible. An NPR‐Ipsos poll last week found that 39 percent of Americans and 60 percent of Republicans believe, “Most of the fentanyl entering the U.S. is smuggled in by unauthorized migrants crossing the border illegally.” A more accurate summary is that fentanyl is overwhelmingly smuggled by U.S. citizens almost entirely for U.S. citizen consumers.

Larry no poke or laughing matter.
People rarely talk about the other folks that die or are hurt by other means. In the last few weeks a tech owner was stabbed outside his San Francisco apartment (assailant still on the loose) . The retired Fire Chief attacked and beaten with a pipe by a homeless man. Many examples those are 2 that I heard about this past week.
As for hitting close to home?????
My son Steven. active duty Marine, took his own life with a handgun. He had had enough of the pain from his injuries and was told " almost all of the previous surgeries would need to be redone. He had enough.
I don't blame him or the gun, nor do I have negative feelings about it. Love and an extreme sense of loss is my burden to carry.
I'm also a range safety officer and educator. Rifle range director, assistant jr.shooters educator. My wife , Son and I all have concealed carry licenses and this state doesn't even require it.
Larry please get past the people are out to get you as I look at you as a Friend. Do friends always need to agree on everything? Hope not as life would get boring.
    Now back to the thread.

Yeah, the best way to end up with a shot citizen is to bring cops into the situation.

John, I am sorry for your loss, but you were being glib, when I posted something serious, and I pushed back. I don't think people are out to get me, not sure where that came from. I don't mind disagreements among friends, hell, if I let that bother me, I'd have a lot less friends. Not my style. It wasn't a big deal. We are OK.
