Nice! I was thinking about your project just a few days ago. Keep us posted.

If you need any electrical help, I can build something for you. Shouldn't be difficult at all to make a controller for this.

It would be fun for me. I like doing this kind of stuff (plus, I do it for a living). Take me up on it!

    Looks great!

    One observation and one question:

    a) If I were to make one for myself, I would just use the 3 ambers (like a modern tree), and just on one side. That would save a little mass and perhaps a little money.

    b) What would it take to add sufficient electronics to control the tree, so that you could launch the car and use it as a full size "practice tree"?

On the input side, it would take a photo sensor of some sort- beam aimed across the road with a receiver on the other side. I think typically there are a pair of beams, right? 1 for prestage, the other for stage.
The controller could easily determine reaction time. The only decision would be how to output the data. A program to interface it to a PC could be written, or an output display of some sort would be added; either an LCD, or a large LED matrix display (like at the end of the track). A wireless RF remote would be nice if you're actually doing in-car reaction time practice. That way, it would be easy to reset and go again. The electronics could keep a running total and average of your reaction times. That could be a lot of fun if you have the room somewhere to set it up.

My plan was to just have one side operate. I wasnt planning on getting that elaborate. I'd be happy having the lights just fire off in sequence. Each floodlight buld is 100 watts. Im not sure how much draw each light has.

Keith- There was a guy on Ebay a couple weeks ago that had a complete Chrondek C-44 timing system. Complete with a tree, 12 sensors, spare boards, etc. It was fully operational. All you would need is the paved area and you would have your own private drag strip!

Amperage = Wattage/Voltage, so each floodlight will draw 0.83 Amps when lit.

115 volt bulbs? If so, 100/115= about 870mA (.87 Amps)

    Thanks.

I did a search but for some reason it didn't find the auction.

As an FYI, Chrondek got bought out by Daktronics in the 80s. From what I hear, Daktronics doesnt support any of the Chrondek systems anymore.

In my research, I did find a guy that repairs the old Chrondek stuff.

    FINISHED!!!

Complete with paint and lettering. The red lettering and the blue base really sets it off. The tree looks crooked because my driveway is a little sloped on that side.
