Seems the same company that built the rig had the same problem back in 1979 and back then as with today are using the same outdated methods trying to cap the flow. They eventually did it by drilling other wells into it relieving the pressure. Same as what BP wants to do now. But it won't be until august at earliest! BP doesn't care though and quite frankly the govt had dragged its feet, which proves the govt no matter WHO IS IN OFFICE cannot be relied on, remember the stellar response for Katrina, the winter ice storms around the Kentucky region and the recent floods in the TN valley area, and to think they now run our banking, education, and health industry, but thats a different topic for a different day.

Bottom line, BP does not want to lose that well, otherwise billions in investments is lost, so they will do what it takes investing money using their lobbying powers to politicians to keep BP in charge. This lobby method was used for years dating back into the '70s and is still in use. Safety inspections? Wink wink money under the table to a politician and inspections are done only on paper. People should be jailed for this crap.

Bottom line something has to be done, all fingers pointing in Washington should wait until the leak is plugged, this blasting option should be looked into as a last resort if it had work before, but only if its a proven technique. But again by doing this would eliminate BP from drilling there for good. Again billions lost. My gut and I pray to God I am wrong, they will at best slow the flow with half ass methods until other wells are drilled sometime by September to cap it. And BP will stay in control with investments to political parties of their concern, the govt will stop all off shore drilling indefinitely a saving face to the public, but will cause gas and oil to skyrocket. When meanwhile just 100 miles off the Keys Cuba is drilling using the same unsure methods where as a major leak can easily occur causing the same results in the region.

What to do? Wish I knew. Maybe before drilling again in deep water a sure fire 100% disaster method should be in place so to stop a major oil leak.

Bill I to pray each day. Also to the lives lost on that rig and to the people in the area effected. I think we're all screwed.

OOOOHH! Lookie here! Follow the money. They knew it! Transocean insured rig far more than worth.

"Eighteen Democratic senators have asked the Justice Department to investigate the operator of the Deepwater Horizon offshore drilling rig after the company announced it would dole out $1 billion to shareholders as oil continues to pour into the Gulf of Mexico. " BP lollygagging and dropping the ball, they won't have to pay out for cleanup. Gov. says "Bad company" and will take over cleanup. Guess who gets to foot the bill? Like always.

Could it work? Seems to have worked in the past with far better odds than BP's 30 year old attempt methods. Last resort? I know BP would be against it as some politicians that would be it for their huge money investment lost. All else has failed and the last other choice is to let it keep flowing oil until September when they complete neighboring wells. By then you can scratch the Florida coast as well the gulf.

My opinion would be for the administration to come down off their "out of touch attitude" and grow a pair and take over the area, seize all BP's American assets to be used as compensation for the damage. And be firm about it, they don't like it too f'ing bad. Then screw this cold war right wing attitude crap and work with the Soviets and blast the sh1t out of the well and be done with it. Screw the left and screw the right with their political beliefs, just do the damn thing and plug it.

So, they are going to cut a clean edge on this pipe and place a funnel type fitting on the end that will then be attached to a pipe leading up to a tanker ship.
My question is, why not place a shut off valve over that pipe after it's cut?
Place it over the pipe with the valve in the open position, weld it onto the pipe, (I assume they can weld underwater with those robots.) and then turn the valve to the off position?

    :idea2:

Or, pinch the pipe closed. From what I understand that is how these blowout preventers work. They have several hydraulic rams that close in on the pipe and choke it off. Kind of like kinking a garden hose.

Goldman Sucks shorted BP just before the explosion. Hmmm. They got huge bailouts ,too that all will be paying for for years to come. Writing your Congressman won't help.

No joke: Goldman Sachs shorted Gulf of Mexico
It turns out that Goldman Sachs really did place shorts on TransOcean stock days before the explosions rocked the rig in the Gulf of Mexico sending stocks plunging while GS profits soared -- benefitting once again from a huge disaster, having done the same with airline stocks prior to 911 then again with the housing bubble.

BP clashes with critics on Gulf of Mexico oil crisis response
    By David Hammer, The Times-Picayune
    May 31, 2010, 10:07PM

With no progress to report Monday in stopping the massive oil leak at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico, BP continued stirring controversy with disputed statements and criticized actions over Memorial Day weekend.

First came an argument over the effect of chemical dispersants on the oil itself.

BP Continues Work at the Oil Leak SiteJohn McCusker/The Times-PicayuneShips positioned Saturday where the Deepwater Horizon rig exploded and collapsed in April.BP chief executive Tony Hayward contradicted scientists and some of his company's previous statements on the issue by denying that dispersants applied at the source of the leak, 5,000 feet below the sea's surface, are creating unseen underwater oil plumes that could emerge later to wreak havoc on marine life and coastal marshes.

"The oil is on the surface. There aren't any plumes." Hayward told The Associated Press.

Hayward may have been guilty of an oversimplification: Observers have spotted clouds of dispersants and droplets of what was once oil, but the droplets' chemical makeup have been altered from petroleum in its complete form. Boats full of scientists continue to analyze the effect of the Corexit dispersants on the oil underwater, and findings haven't been conclusive.

Samantha Joye, a University of Georgia scientist who is part of a team taking samples out in the Gulf, filed a report on her blog Sunday evening saying they found oil floating in the water column and samples smelled distinctly of petroleum. The website showed photographs of clear surface water and another sample from about 1,200 feet deep with brown streaks of oil.

    "Visible oil!"
she proclaimed on the blog, www.gulfblog.uga.edu.

BP spokesman John Curry said that two other vessels with scientists are continuing to study whether the plumes should be a concern, and the company is eager to know the results.

Then came an emerging fight over what dispersants sprayed at the surface might be doing to people hired by BP to clean up the spill.

A fisherman, who was among nine cleanup workers airlifted to New Orleans-area hospitals with signs of illness last week, filed a complaint in federal court Sunday alleging that BP made him take a decontamination shower and confiscated his clothes before he entered West Jefferson Medical Center. The fisherman, James Wunstell of Galliano, is asking a federal judge to order BP to stop taking items that could provide evidence of the dispersants' toxic effect.

(ME here:) Has BP been told IN PLAIN ENGLISH TO STOP THIS DISPERSANT BY THE EPA????? DOES THE GOV HOLA ANY POWER!?!?!?!?)

"At West Jefferson, there were tents set up outside the hospital, where I was stripped of my clothing, washed with water and several showers, before I was allowed into the hospital," said Wunstell in a sworn statement from his hospital bed Saturday. "When I asked for my clothing, I was told that BP had confiscated my clothing and it would not be returned."

BP spokesman John Curry declined to comment on pending litigation, but it appears that BP was simply following federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulations, which require decontamination of people working in hazardous materials zones and proper collection and disposal of their protective clothing.

Wunstell's affidavit says he suffered headaches, nose irritation and a spike in blood pressure while working on his boat in the spill zone, where he said planes were spraying chemical dispersants. But the dispersants are not on a federal list of hazardous materials, and Curry said that BP is performing constant air-quality tests that have shown no dangerous readings.

"We want to ensure workers' health and safety are protected, so we give them Tyvek suits, nitrile gloves, safety glasses, hard hats when working near overhead hazards, rubber boots, plus hearing protection, insect repellant, sunscreen, lip balm, personal floatation devices and steel-toe boots," Curry said.

He said that if any air-quality concerns arise, BP is prepared to give workers respirators, (ME Again: They are prepared, but won't 'cause it will show a possible danger and , of course, become a liability)but so far all readings have shown no toxins.

Hayward again joined the debate, this time regarding the sick workers. In an interview on CNN, he suggested it could be food poisoning.

"I'm sure they were genuinely ill, but whether it was anything to do with dispersants and oil, whether it was food poisoning or some other reason for them being ill," Hayward said. "You know, food poisoning is clearly a big issue when you have a concentration of this number of people in temporary camps, temporary accommodation. It's something we have to be very, very mindful of. It's one of the big issues of keeping the army operating. You know, armies march on their stomachs."

West Jefferson Medical Center announced Monday that it had set up a first-aid tent on Grand Isle specifically to treat cleanup workers, and the federal government said it had sent a mobile medical unit to Venice.

Meanwhile Monday, The AP, citing an anonymous White House official, reported that President Obama planned to meet today with the co-chairman of an independent commission he formed to investigate the spill(WHOOPEE!!!!!!!!!!!).

Also, the state announced new oil sightings Monday along coastlines in Jefferson and Lafourche parishes: a gray sheen on the bay side of the Camanida Bridge and a sheen with tar balls near Camanida Pass; an oil slick with tar patties floating in it a mile souteast of Elmer Island; a gray sheen with quarter-size tar balls in the mouth of Belle Pass; rainbow sheen with tar balls in Pass Fourchon; and ribbons of sheen coming from Little Lake into Grand Bayou Blue with 150 feet of metallic sheen three miles to the north. :ball:

Re: Free Oil!!!!! Come Get'cha Free Oil!!!!

Heard this morning on the news that our officials from Washington stated that there is a strong possibility that the oil will continue to flow into the gulf until the other shafts are completed sometime in August. Hmmm, thats some three three months at least. I cannot not wait until Florida gets hit. Meanwhile obama talks a good talk and thats about as far as it goes. I still stand on the facts at hand the federal govt should seize all of BP's assets in lew of clean up costs and take over the area and do what ever has to be done regardless. And for me to say this who I believe in no govt control shows my feelings on this. Again the Constitution leaves the Federal Govt's main responsibility on protecting American citizens. Geez can you imagine if we are ever attacked?

Leaving it be with oil spilling into the gulf will be far worse than any other extreme method on capping it. Every and all methods should be used that have the greatest chances on stopping it. If anyone objects tell the govt seizing BP's assets should then get in line or stick it where the sun don't shine. Obama is losing ratings by far on his way on being the worst president ever, this I feel taking a firm stance growing some balls for Americans and America would be a home run for him and the country. But as we know logic and politics in DC are like opposites on a magnet. A place where stupidity and corruption prevails.

Oh and up north here, you don't here much about the leak, its getting down played I guess hoping people will ignore it. Info has to be obtained off the net. For this I blame the media which of course would rather talk about things Washington wants them to. The entire thing just makes me sick.

The Bank of England in the City of London basically owns the Federal Reserve, which basically owns the United States through bankruptcy. I am pretty sure that Bank of England is a major shareholder of BP also. Nawww. BP will come out well and probably nothing will happen regarding siezures and so forth. Maybe a dog and pony show with fines levied we will see. Why do you think BP is running the show?

I think it's all ready too late. Way too late. Best thing to do is just keep a low profile and go with the flow and look out for your own people. Strive to keep yourself "aware" so at least you'll know where you stand in situations that may crop up. There's a lot of deception going.
