Well one time on a 1000 mile trip when the rope rear main went I stopped at Wallmart and grabbed a pack of diapers and some oil to get to my uncles.....

The poll needs to be modified to make the distinction between the drop-in neoprene seal and the cut-to-fit neoprene seal. The drop-in seal is actually the wrong size for the BBB application. In most cases it will lleak (as in my case). But the cut-to-fit seal, if done right, will be a much better fit, and will not leak like the drop-in (again as in my case after I replaced the drop-in).

so yeah my rear main leaks and so did the front... I used a rope seal to replace it and my pinky finger to jam it in... has not leaked since... the rear though has been about the same since I got it... just a few drips here and there though...

though I have a 97 ford probe I bought for $500.00 with that mazda engine in it. and that thing leaks... though I would rather just put oil in it every two weeks more so than spend the time it takes to pull the whole engine out of the bottom of the car....

My '53 322 c.i. Nailhead leaks (small drips) as of this morning (front and rear - it also has Alzheimer's and doesn't know it's way home this week). As of this afternoon, it is in the HOSPITAL and should be getting a new Neoprene seal installed by the Engine Doctor. Oct 5. . . My birthday is Oct 8 - and I am hoping to have EVERY SINGLE OIL SEAL LEAK STOPPED - as well as a reconditioned fuel pump installed - it has been leaking. I know about that leak because my snippy little 20-something neighbor wrote me a nastygram explaining that I was killing him with the fuel smell. Some things just don't work FAST ENOUGH !
I couldn't wait at the HOSPITAL to see the motor pulled out - but I have been assured that all will be well by my Birthday. I've already covered the driveway drip spots with sand - it soaked up the oil nicely, and the fuel nicely too, and I let the WIND blow it away - do not even have to sweep it. Hope it blows into the neighbor's pool. . .

Not just the engine, don't forget these those engines have large support systems. They have an oil tank vented to atmosphere and usually at least one sometimes multiple coolers, check valves (don't forget these things have all kinds of flight attitude as well), thermostat valves, all kinds of lines and limiters, fuel/oil dilution systems for starting. Also the oil is used to control the propeller constant speed system and of course they are air cooled so run much larger clearances than a typical auto engine. A huge number of sources of leaking and/or venting to take place as well as just plain old leaking, not to mention some of these engines were massive (like the 4360 ci corncob): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pratt_&_Whitney_R-4360

Talking to many of the old timers they said when the radials were new they didn't leak that bad, mostly it was venting and burning.

Even a ultra modern turbine with years of technology and experience on a jet transport aircraft will burn 2 quarts a day easily in operation. Most of that is on startup/shutdown though as the labrynth (air) seals don't have the pressure to work properly....can't really have rubbing seals on parts going 30,000rpm.

And yeah, just noticed a drop of oil on my garage floor this past week. not sure where yet but most likely rear main and if so out she comes....

    Aint the BBB
But my BBB 425 Nailhead leaks. I put synthetic oil in last change and it leaks more than ever. Guess I have to go back to dino oil until I can afford a rear main seal. Never had a head off in the 30 yrs:bglasses: I have owned the car. Been a good one.

Putting Dino oil back in won't slow down the leak. Ask me how I know!!!! Installed a neoprene seal & since all has been OK.

I think if you see a 300" Buick V-8 that the rear main is not leaking, it must be out of oil.

I used to buy oil by the case when I did an oil change just so I could use the cardboard box as a drip catcher on the garage floor after I changed the oil. :)
