I built my motor about 15 years ago or more and the rear seal doesn't leak. The front one just started to leak this year after racing it hard. They are both rope seals done by myself. Dave
455 in my Regal - neoprene & no leaks 455 in my pickup - I'm guessing there was a rope seal there at one point in time... every time I turn it off it pees out a spot about the size of a fist. I have a replacement motor to go in this fall yet though. Question on the scavenging system - are they effective on a low-speed application like a tow-rig? What about with stock manifolds (with the 'vacuum' port mounted in the headpipe)? Or does it take the higher exhaust speeds of racing to make it work properly?
I'm the leak master. My Wildcat rear main leaks (Rope seal), rear tranny seal leaks, power steering seeps, even the gas tank will drip if I fill it all the way up. My tires leak air and if I'm lucky the radiator will start to drip. Then I will be 100% for that car. My Skylark didn't drip at all till it sat last winter. Now it drips unless I drive it. Rear main is a Neoprene seal. And the best one is my GS. No motor or trans in the car currently and sitting up on my car trailer. Its leaking oil out of the TRUNK! I guess an old spare qt. of oil wedged down in the quarter decided to sping a leak. ou: Does it get any worse than that?
I have several engines as you can see if you read my signature and most do not leak I use both rope and neoprene maybe I am lucky or maybe i park them on dirt so I can not see them hehehe :TU: Ken
I was talkin to some guys here who are into planes and they were sayin just about any plane with a radial engine would consume that much oil. so there are a lot. that leak that much with gaskets and such.
That FoMoCo neoprene rear seal in my Buick 350 doesn't leak one little drop! To bad the rest of the engine sucks p
LOL :TU: My truck tire has the air leak, wagon is good on engine with rope seal but neo trannie seal leaks. PS leaks on the cadillac. Rear main on the rivvies 401 started to leak this year after 9 years of non leak. Most embarrasing, my freshly restored 65 Wildcat convertible leaks PSfluid and trannie fluid, but no leaks on the rear mains! What I got is a spotty garage floor. I ought to spill drain oil over the whole thing to make it look uniform! :spank:
Opps, sorry, didn't notice the BBB until I voted. Have a 73 350 Buick, I'm assuming rope seal, assuming it's original. Leaks, but not much.
Years ago I worked in a Buick dealership, that was a nitemare to stop oil leaks. Learned a few tricks along the way, but it was still a trick to stop the leaks. My rear main does not leak, but park the car far a few days and you better fill up the transmission, it will self change the fluid. Think I'll look into that while doing frame off. ou: MIke
I had Car Quest auto parts' machine shop re-build my short block in 98' and they used a neoprene seal and it still does not leak. :TU:
Man, I'm glad this was posted! I thought there was something wrong with my 455 because it doesn't leak, the first car I ever had with a modified engine that didn't leak. Thought I'd have to take the neoprene seal out and install a rope seal. The trans on the other hand keeps the bottom of the car from rusting out. Dave B
I'm in the middle of pulling my hair out here. I replaced the pan gasket last week. Leaked terribly! Friday night GSThunder (Al Fiandaca) came over and straightened my pan and replaced the gasket (AGAIN!). Today there was a HUGE puddle of oil under the car. I just loc-tite'd the pan bolts and we'll see. I don't think it is the rear main. Looks like it is at the corners of the block, possibly from even higher... Possible head gasket?
intake manifold to block and head corner maybe? I arn't there instructions to but black RTV on those corners using the black rubber end gaskets?
oil leak?? hey guys, mine doesn't leak.t/a (ford) noepreme.you might want to try silicone on the main cap area.i put it on from the seal to the outside edge, not too much ,just a dab.torq the cap& wipe off excess.i've seen it where the oil leaks down the parting line, causing the rear seal to get the blame.just a suggestion, hope it helps. dan 10.61@125
