Re: Got My AED 1000HO today

    From the AED site.

*** Important Notice 4/26/06 : It has come to our attention that in the northeast US there might be some new fuel additive in pump gasoline that is affecting the rigidity of clear view sight plugs. Not just ours, but everyone's. The sight plugs may become soft & possibly leak fuel . If in doubt replace them with brass sight plug screws. At this time racing fuel, alcohol, or conventional gas has not created problems. It might even be ethanol related & this fuel might even be used in other parts of the country. We will pass along any additional info as it becomes available.

I wouldn't put anything glass or plastic between the gas and the outside ever . :pp

First I've heard of something like this. I supply fuel/brake systems to the OEMs...I'll ask around.

    Hi Folks:
To 1969Briviera: On a stock 430 I would not use the 1000HO. Even though the Buicks are torque monsters I would have some concern with bottom end & acceleration. Especially with a stock converter & gearing. Use our 850HO instead as it will work very well & provides more bottom end. It still can be used with gears & headers & converter etc.
Hey Larry thanks for providing info on the sight plugs. We got scared last year with a few customers that had sight plugs actually melt when in contact with fuel in the notheast. We later had a few issues on the west coast. It seems like it's the fuel additive that replaced the MTBE additive used for years that will melt the sight plug material. We've used these sight plugs for over 10 years with no apparent problems. Envirenmental issue??? Not sure but to be safe since we don't know the end user in most applications we didn't want to take a chance. I hated that we had to pull over 700 carburetors off the shelf & change all the sight plugs. What we know at this time is it just appears to be in winter blended fuels in some areas, not racing gas or even alcohol. I don't think it's ethanol related at all. Again thanks to all you great guys for giving us a chance to provide our services. You will find out we will bend over backwards to help in anyway we can to earn your trust. Don't hesitate to call or e-mail if there's anything we can do.

    Thanks

John, do you remember what type of plastic was used on the old sight plugs? Might give me an idea of what was attacking them.

The sight plugs used are they the same as the ones mr.gasket or holley sell?

    Thanks

    Hey Devon:
These are made out of acrylic (spelling?) & we actually buy them from Moroso. I know people were having problems with other people's sight plugs too & am not sure who's other people use. They will get gooey for the lack of better term when exposed to the offending fuel. You can pull them out & they woul become rigid again but not retain there shape. We soaked ours in about everything imaginable with no issues but we're located in Virginia. Alcohol will make the plugs blurru over time but won't soften them up. I talked with a fuel engineer at Cam 2 (Sunoco) & he thought it was the replaced additive in street fuels. That's about all I know. Also I think some of the larger clear sight plugs are actually glass & probably not affected by the fuel.
