Did I screw up with this carb?

Really? About 20 years ago I bought a Comp. Series 1000 CFM Thermoquad for practically nothing and swapped it out with the QJ that was on my 71 GS 455. I can honestly say it's been by far the biggest bang for the buck upgrade I've ever done. I don't know how much HP it added but going by the seat of the pants meter it had to be somewhere from 30 to 50 HP.

Out of curiosity I did try a big Holley a few years ago and never really liked it compared to the TQ. Back on went the TQ and its staying there. As a bonus I like the way CS's TQ's look compared to other carbs!

I downloaded the latest version of Irfan and when I resize now it makes a BMP out of the photo. It never did that before when I used it. So, I will use photoshop from now on. Haven't tried it yet and hope it's as easy.

Hey John, is there any problem with your stage 1 fuel pump supplying the needed fuel to the new carb? I am getting an HP1000 this week and am running only a stage 1 mechanical pump.

    Hi George...
I am getting Holley from a member of this board. It is already set up with a billet baseplate and metering blocks too, has the four corner idle, good power valves, etc...so it should be similar to the AED carbs. The seller did tell me that the carb DOES have vacuum ports though (I assume that is why you were asking). I am not sure if the stock baseplate had them or if they are a bonus with the addition of the billet baseplate though. Sorry.:Do No:

He's completely ignorant of Buicks all together. They aren't like Chevys at all. If he wants more business from Buick customers and is ( very important here ) OPEN MINDED to buicks, he'll do some research on them. That way he can steer his up and, coming and newly learning Buick customers in the right direction. Buicks like big carbs. Anyone that has a basic foundation of knowledge regarding Buick motors is well aware of this. It's frustrating for me to hear the same old thing OVER AND OVER AGAIN from the typical uninformed Chevy guy who automatically thinks he knows Buick motors. I'm sick of it. Talk about a knee jerk reaction !!! If he stays close minded to Buicks and isn't very interested in doing a little research in to them, I would take my business in the future to a business that specializes in Buick performance. You will have no problem with board members here steering you in the right direction. Just follow the advice of some of the experienced board members here and those Chevy guys will continue to pull their hair out looking at your tail lights. It's a very gratifying feeling to say the least. OK I'll get off my soapbox. Good luck my friend. John.

I never pounded it for a long enough distance to run out of gas. A little less than 1/8 mile I guess. The pressure gauge showed a considerable drop when I revved the engine up. I need to put a valve in the return line to shut it off when I want to run it. I also have a holley pump that I can install out back if I need it. I would let the mech. do the work when driving normal (if I ever do that!).

The video in my sig is the car with the holley hp1000 with only a Stage1 mechanical pump.. As you can see it doesn't run out of gas. :pp

Let's not lose sight of the fact that CFM alone is not the only factor in making a carb choice. The fuel curve in the 1000 Holley HP series is very good right out of the box for a well warmed-up 455.

I emailed AED about their 1000HO carb. Told them my combination. Just got a response from them

    Hi Larry:
That's alot of airflow for that head, wow. The Buicks like Olds & Pontiacs with a smaller intake runner in the head like more carburetor because the intake runner. The 1000HO we make is the same sizing as an 850HO but just uses the HP body which flows about 60cfm more. In turn they lack a little bottem end power over the 850HO. Both our carbs mentioned feature vacuum ports. Also our carbs differ from the Holley's because we don't buy complete carbs from them. We buy unmachined castings & do all the component selection & machining in house. Our are totally hand assembled & test run before shipping also. You shouldn't have to use an adapter just a thin plate so there's no vacuum leaks to install on the Edelbrock manifold. In the past we've used the 850HO on apps like yours. My only concern is missing a little bottom end with the 1000. You will be so much better off than your current setup that you can't go wrong either way. Please let me know if we can help Larry. We have both in stock.

    Take Care

Obviously, they know about Buicks and bigger carbs. I think I'll call and order the 1000HO. I have so much bottom end right now I can afford to lose a little, but really, I think it's damn near impossible to kill the bottom end on a BBB.

I think that carb and the SP1 you've been thinking about are great moves, especially with your head work. A flick of the switch to high stall and who cares about bottom end anyway, you're instantly into midrange.

Yup, I'm gonna try it on my Performer manifold first with 1/2" and 1" spacers. With the drop base air cleaner I have, I have the room. SP1 down the road a bit. I've bought a 1971 8.5 Buick rear. Having it put together with all the good stuff, Axles, Eaton HD posi, and 3.73's:TU: Last thing I'll do is change the cam to a 288-92H (231/234, 110, .525/.525 lift)
