PHR...455 Buick, aluminum heads, and blower = <500hp...What? In a world of 7-800hp pump gas engines from practically any of the other brands/flavors, that looks pretty sucky to the average "Motorhead"/reader. ou: In the article they do at least acknowledge the set up is less than optimum...ie "all show" not go. Still if this is the best Buick build they can come up with, why bother. It's practically negative press. I'd rather be ignored than made fun of.:error:
Recived car craft today, I enjoyed the comparison between stage 1 ,Edlebrock, and TA heads on a low (8.8:1) compression 455. I think the 413 cam, aluminum head 455 Buick would love at least 10:1 compression. I like that they used both the B4B and SPX intakes. Thanks Freiburger, and Car-Craft for the Buick coverage.
Yup, I was reading mine today. Not as in-depth as the first article in my opinion but I'm still glad to see Buick stuff getting some ink.
For a guy looking into a motor swap this is a great article. A cheap set of pistons, cam, headers, intake, then later heads and you have a big block running 11s. A lot cheaper than a pumped up LS motor or even a rat when you take into account the cost of the starting point. Alot of people think it takes twice the money to make a buick run. The CC article shows that's not the case.:TU:
I would like to see Car Craft raise the compression to 10.5:1 on that 455. I would also like them to plug-in the dino #s to a computer program to get what E.T. a 3750 lb A body with a 3000 stall ,auto trans. 355 effective gear, would run with good traction at sea level. I belive its called a Quarter jr program. I suspect the B4B manifold would E.T. quicker with the 413 cam, as there is more torque at shift recovery point. The dino test between the TA and Edlebrock heads was more even than I thought it would be. David Freiburger writes the low-buck and Buick articals I like to read. I renewed my subscription to Car Craft.
Also, for everyones edification...dont know if i was mentioned in this thread or in another but i read another Buick article I think, in Hot Rod or some similar magazine that did an edelbrock head swap on a 462 that had a dyers blower setup and picked up 50 hp. Pretty cool looking engine, only made 430 or so to the wheels so it mustve been a stock rebuild with the blower to nly make that much power i would imagine.
Horsepower on the power block tv program just did an Oldsmobile 455 assembled by Joe Mondello himself, with Edlebrock ported heads, more cam,and I would think (I dont know exactly) more compression. Made 456 HP. 535 ft. lbs. on their dino. I would love to see what the Car-Craft Buick 455 would do with some porting done to the heads an more compresson.
Just got done reading the CC article. It was enjoyable reading. I also think its rather informative for people who've never seen a Buick before. In the world of belly button chevy 350's, this is a breath of fresh air. Finally a break in the monotony. If they would've gotton everything wrong, I still would've enjoyed reading the article.
Peak numbers for the 413 cam,"SPX" ,Holley 750 Street hp carb ...TA SE heads were worth 54 hp over TA Stage one "IRON" heads in these tests.
