Got my car craft today and low and behold there is a 455 build up... 2 TA cams 413, TA212 , B4b,Edlebrock Performer, Sp1 , Spx.....next month they are putting "a few sets of better cylinder heads across it" Stay tuned". " So far the 212 with dual plane (b4b or Performer) is their favorite combo . J 426 hp at 5300 513 TQ 3500 455 +.030 = 462 8.77:1 compression Relieved speed pro pistons Reconditioned stage one iron heads Ta prepped -stock 750 cfm Street Hp carb Performer or B4B performed the same 1 7/8 hookers TA 212 camshaft stock rockers 1.55 Put on an SPX and made 443 hp at 5500 500 lbs at 3600 Then they put a 413 in with an spx and said "basically it was a flop , probably due to our engines low compression and stock heads". 495 ftlbs at 4000 and 459 hp at 5500. "As for torque the large cam lost as much as 40 ft lbs at some points". Next month with new heads ought to be a neat article.....J
No problem ...next month is going to be interesting ....they are trying different heads - that ought to be a really neat article....I hope they mention carb jetting as they didnt touch on that subject at all.... ......J
I was pretty pleased when I opened this month's CarCraft. The preferred combo is basically the same one I'm using in my Skylark, except that I'm using an iron intake, an 800 cfm Q-jet with a 1 inch carb spacer and TA headers.
sweet that is similar to my combo. 466 ci .050 over cast pistons stage 1 heads performer 800 cfm qjet comp cams 212int/223exh 112cl degreed at 109.5deg 9.55 compression ta headers 533 ft/lbs @3400 422 hp @ 5200
I was surprised that the SPX made so much power on a mild engine. Too bad they (probably) didn't degree the cams... Very good article! Looking forward to parts 2 and 3 in the coming months!
What's up with Car Craft and the newstands??? I can't find a copy anywhere, Including the grocery stores, Wal-Mart, and even Barnes & Noble. Is it a subscriber only deal now to get a copy?
Its nice to get some coverage. Now I hope they consult with folks in the know with combos that we've found work on these engines. I'd like to see a bump in compression up to a full point to 9.5 to 9.7. Will easily still run on pump fuel. And another full point if they switch to some alum. Stage 1 heads. Another improvement would be an 830 HP Holley carb instead of the 750. Does the article mention timing curves? I'll have to go try to find the magazine. Engines are engines but these big bore short stroke Buicks are kinda peculiar.
did anyone notice the picture with the printoseal intake gaskets? i've been triing to find them for awhile.ta does'nt carry them, does anyone no who sells them?o No: i used to use then years ago, work good..
Where Would I Be Able To Sign Up For The Car Craft Magazines, Would I Be Able To Get The Previous Mag, Where The First 455 Was Built...
http://www.carcraft.com/index.html The latest is a pretty interesting article, I think it's great to see ANY car mag do an article on an actual street-driveable engine build - and it's really close to what a lot of us seem to be running (me included). Although I'm a bit surprised by their hp/torque numbers - they seem high to me, especially considering their relatively low compression. Aren't most TA212-cammed engines around here making just under 400hp?
I always thought mine did. Though, I think I have a little more compression. My block was decked .010, the heads were trued up taking .008 off and I'm using steel gaskets at .020 thick. I wanted to use my performer intake, but it wouldn't fit (I had it on my 76 Electra so I knew it fit something). For some reason though the stock 70 intake did, so that's what it got.
I found the printoseal gaskets in a FelPro high performance catalog and purchased a pair several years ago. They are probably still available since they appeared on the Car Craft engine.
can someone scan the article and email it to me? the suspense is killing me! I have not got the chance to see if I can get my hands on it yet. My P>I>T>A machinist made a point to call me at work and let me know he got his copy in the mail! He refused to give me any of the details of the article-he said i had to get my own copy!
The reason the compression is so low is probably because they are planning more testing with with the better heads. I believe in the article they mention the heads they are using are 74 with 72 or 71 cc chambers. I'm fairly certain all the aftermarket heads have 64cc chambers. They probably wanted to keep costs down and not have more than one shortblock assembly..
Ditto....egganddg....I tried to sign up for the 3rd time today and i guess the website does not take my card, it says its invalid...geeeez someone advise me, i dont want to miss this years article, and sure wish i had last article. i will call car craft tomorrow...
Would have been nice to see them use a larger carb than that 750, for comparisons. They were swapping cams and intakes, would have been nice to show the differences between a 750 and 850 at the same time with the various intakes and cams.
I can post the article, not sure if there's a copyright issue or not, I'm sure the moderator will delete if there is. admin edit... Ya, heavy copyright issue... sorry guys, your going to have to pick it up on the newstands.
