    What person is this?

    What do you have?

I think you should not try to fix something that isn't broken. The big cap HEI is not a drop in. There are other things you need to do. My advice is to leave it alone. Re curve your current distributor. Add a 4 bbl intake and Q-jet, and dual exhaust. Do those things first if you have money burning a hole in your pocket:laugh:

How can I tell if it is a Buick HEI

don't have money burnin but I would like to replace things one by one. not up for the whole 4 banger as I hear it burns more gas. Its a daily driver.

You have to post a picture of what you have. We have no way of knowing what you have. The Buick HEI is shorter than the Chevy HEI.

I really think you should not bother with the big cap HEI. I think you would be better off just getting your distributor rebuilt if you think it is worn. Then add an electronic conversion to it if you must.

    Give us the casting number.

Once we've established its a Buick, you can count the teeth on the gear. 13 tooth is a big block. 14 tooth fits a small block. Big block and small block Buick distributors are interchangable by swapping the gears.

The 4 barrel only burns more gas if you have a heavy foot. Keep it in the primaries, and it is more efficient than a 2 barrel.

HEI's need full time battery voltage. Points use a resistance wire to drop voltage. You need to replace the resistance wire.

The big cap can hit your current upper radiator hose, so you may need to replace it. The cap can sometimes hit the intake manifold when you try to adjust the timing. Depends on how it is installed in the engine.

    How's that for starters?

I googled it on my old 8088 computer and was unable to find a conclusive answer..:Dou: I did store the info on a 5 1/4 floppy and printed what I could find on a dot matrix printer..

Hey larry IDK if you remember I posted a while back about my distributor being a tooth off. If not here we go. the vac advance points toward the radiator. the rad hose goes around the cap. coil in cap....I will see if wiring the coil to the to a switch then battery/fues will help.

Now I remember. You already have the HEI installed. Why do you want to replace it? It wouldn't run if you had it wired to the resistance wire.

I didn't ask. I can tell from the photos you have a Buick HEI distributor in your Buick engine.
