    Guys,

We are going to do a major software upgrade here the week after next. This upgrade should both fix the search function, as well as the garage feature, so I am told.

Scheduled for the week of the 11th of January, we will be offline for a while.

    Thanks

Thanks for the heads up Jim, that gives me time to stock up on antidepressants.

That's where you type in a bunch of stuff, the little wheel thing goes round and round for 10 minutes and then you get a pop-up stating that "nothing can be found that fits your criteria"... please try again later...Only one Ive ever seen that remotely comes close to working is on edog. Ya still have to use your search terms carefully. Don't ever search for a skylark fender or youll end up with a jimi Hendrix fender stratocaster for 900K. Bill in TR

Ya, search engine is a big deal.. and a major dissapointment in the last minor upgrade.

The reason it has not been fixed, is because it's the major upgrade to do it.. instead of a 4.x.x, we have to jump to the 5 series.. and there were serious flaws in the ".0.0 versions of 5.. there has been a whole major upgrade since it's release, and seems to be stable now.

We started with V-bulletin 2.1.3 if I recall correctly.. the current software is 4.1.12

If all this .x.x stuff is confusing, I should explain the numbering system works like this

    4.1.12

The 4 is generation (major architecture, both on screen, and in operating system)

the .1 is the major revision level (major restructuring/fixes or minor redesign)

the .12 is the minor revision level (minor fixes and adds)

And then there is a whole "patch level" beyond that..

We will be going to 5connect.. the current version is 5.1.4

Should fix the search and garage for PC users, and is suppose to be considerably better for mobile users..

Each time we have jumped a generation in the past, it has been a major nightmare.. considerable customization has been done to the templates, to make it "look" like it does now, and that has to be all done again, from scratch, when you jump a generation.

    Fun fun..

Why was I getting audio ads on the harmonic balancer thread?

Your computer has some sort of adware on it that inserts that stuff into webpages. V8Buick doesn't have any of that.

    Thanks Jim!

I hope this time out allows a bunch here to take a break from the board, reflect, grow, and be more thoughtful upon return.

Seems like too many bitch squabbles recently, and really,,, over what?

Happy New Year to all V8 BUICK bretheren!

I hope we all come back to a rebuilt Board with refreshed attitudes and positve subject matter to post and creative threads.

Maybe some fun builds and BUICK stuff to engage in?

I look forward to dropping some 2015 Board Op Funds when It is back on line and the bitching amongst some members stops...

    Cheers!

It is all relative. Visit so many other auto Boards and you will appreciate the environment here even more.

    I concur Jim,

I wouldn't want to see this board become what those others are, but the trend seems to be evolving down that tube lately.

Do u have to install ver 5.0.0 before u can install the major 5 upgrade?
I have been there and done that many times (during my 40+ years of working with computers, networks, firewalls), with server & email, etc. Can be a real pain in the a??.
    Good Luck!!

You guys are already doing a great job! Go over here and either watch the gerbils run in the cage or crank up Mabel at the switchboard and tell her to ring 3 long 3long and 3 short to get on a dial up forum... Its barely one step ahead of binary programming or running your own HTML codac. Bill in TR

    Jim,
Any idea how long we'll be off line? As I recall, the last time drew out for 5 days or so with a few more days to work out the bugs. Just looking for a ball park figure so I can find an alternate activity.

    Well, it gets worst.

For the last 4 or 5 years, when V-bulletin came out with a new product, we have looked at upgrading, and came to the conclusion that we should wait for a while, let them fix the bugs.. this was true before we upgraded to vb4 and then we waited to do vb5.. even tho we desperately need the upgrade (what good is an internet database without a search engine?)

Since we are considering a jump to vb5, I have done some research.. and am not liking what I have been seeing..

    A little history..

Back in 2002 when we started this thing, Bucy and I went out and found and purchased the slickest software there was for a forum. It was certainly V-Bulletin. We had great success with them for about 10 years, thru several updates as we progressed thru vb2 and vb3.

In 2012, when we switched to vb4, the issues started.. basically what happened, is that the parent company forced out a product that was not ready for market, and then abandoned the product to put out the next release, before all the bugs were eliminated.

That's why we don't have a working search function, or garage function in this version, and why were were hacked here a while back.. there were/are serious security issues in this, now abandoned, version of the software.

It seems they are doing this again now.. apparently, vb5connect has some serious speed issues, along with the inability to easily customize the look of the board. And from all accounts, they have now abandoned development on 5connect, and are now moving forward with the latest release.. vb5cloud...

Searching for a reason why such a good stable software company has apparently gone to the dogs, I did some internet snooping, and found out that the original company that Developed V Bulletin is no more... they were bought out in 2009 by the conglomerate Internet Brands Inc...

All of the original developers are gone.. along with the the braintrust and business savvy that made V Bulletin a success in the first place.

Now we have a big company, full of faceless programers, pumping out new products.

    Why?

You know it.. updates are free, new licenses are required to be purchased ($300-400) for every completely new release.

The parent conglomerate is simply out to make money, at the expense of the product.

Their customers are exiting like Mice on a sinking ship.

    _________

It may be time to join them..

I have read in several places that there is no forum on the net, with over 1 million posts, that runs vb5 in any form. Speed, or lack of it, seems to be the core issue.

There are a couple other forum software programs out there, one gaining popularity rapidly is Xenforo.

Here is an auto forum run with that software..

    http://www.stangnet.com/mustang-forums/articles/

It also can look like this.. which is closer to what we have here..

    http://www.orangepower.com/forum/

Functionality is similar, but the look is different.. these are full customized versions of Xenforo, their base package looks like this..

    http://forums.jetcareers.com/

We could attempt to create what we have here with the new software, or we could go with a different look and feel, like the mustang forum..

Me personally, I don't mind that Orangepower forum look... but I am interested in your input.

One this is for sure.. the search function works great on that mustang forum..

No decisions have been made yet, I just about pulled the trigger on VB5 last night, but something told me to do some more research.. boy am I glad I did.

At this point in time, Bucy is coming out to the shop today so we can hash out a plan.. and we need your input.

I would love to keep the current software and have it be secure and work like it's suppose to, but that apparently is not an option at this point.

    Thanks

    JW

More than likely, we would create an entirely new site, with the current database.. with a different address on the net.. and test it's function and get the look right before this one would go away..

The change then would be overnight..

But "don't quote me".. :Dou: still alot of stuff in flux here..
