Barrett Jackson Auction - Scottsdale Az

I did the preview day for the Barrett Jackson auction today. Much better car selection than last year. One 70 stage one caught my eye. It looked like a great original car.

    Barrett-Jackson Lot: 445 - 1970 BUICK GS 455 STAGE 1 COUPE

    Auction: SCOTTSDALE 2010 Sale Price:
Year: 1970 Make: BUICK Model: GS 455 STAGE 1 Style: COUPE Exterior Color: BURNISHED SADDLE Interior Color: BURNISHED SADDLE Cylinders: V8 Engine Size: 455 Transmission: AUTOMATIC Summary: Matching numbers, un-restored with 23,700 original miles. One owner for 39 years. Protect-O-Plate, Sloan documentation and original documentation. Highly optioned, garaged from day one and it shows. The originality of this Buick is amazing. Details: The Legendary GS Stage 1 was one of the fastest Muscle Cars ever built. This Stage 1 has 23,700 original miles, matching numbers and the original owner owned it for 39 years. Kept in a garage since the day it was first purchased on November 14, 1969 at Dirk Waltz Buick in Midland, Michigan for $4,311.47. Not only is this a low mileage Stage 1 but it is also one with a lot of options. Only 1,189 Stage 1's were built with the special Turbo 400 and air conditioning. However less than a hundred had the power options loaded up on this coupe. One look at the detail on the wheels, chrome, interior and even the engine block leaves you amazed at its preservation. These items have not been painted up to look this good, they are original and as the saying goes, they are only original once. This car has the original Protect-O-Plate that documents the Stage 1 codes, copy of original title, original registrations back to 1971 and original owner's manual with folder that docments delivery information. It also has the original sale product bulletin and picture sheet that explains the Stage 1 package, the original warranty brochure and original starting instruction tag. Sloan Museum documentation is also included. Everything including all the power options function as they should. This Stage 1 not only looks like new but it performs like the legend it is.

    Thanks, Bob.

I had the same year and color stage 1also with console and AC. JW owns it now.

They just need to get some new foams and correct the cobb job done on the master cylinder and power booster.:Dou:

There's a pair of 455GS fender emblems on ebay this week. For those building a clone, or repairing a bent fender.

I believe that this car has been on ebay a couple of times and also has been the topic of at least one thread here.

I have traveled from Kansas to Arizona to enjoy 6 days of Barrett-Jackson. Of course I have looked through the car list and will watch the Buick's closely. If you have a car that you want good pics of, let me know and I'll try to help you out.

I am going to say 20-40K is the range for this car. The owner better have 2 or more after it or it could be a give away. There is a high risk of seller remorse with not so good of a chance it will be an upside surprise. What do you say?

I would agree with that Jim..

I have watched this auction for the year or so, and watched various makes and models of nut and bolt resto's go across the block, for far less than folks have invested. 30-40K for cars I know would cost low six figures to do.

The pucker factor this year is high for sellers.

    Good market for buyers.

You can do Ok with a car that nobody has a ton of bucks in.. if it's the Original Owner selling that low mile stage, he might do ok. But taking a restored car out there for resale is a big gamble. I see one of our members has a restored GSX there.. I wish him the best..

I doubt that Brown STG 1 tops 40K.. unless you get a couple of guys who really dig the low miles/unrestored status, and have deep pockets and active paddles.. Big option load and low miles will help that one, but the bench and standard steering wheel are detractions.. Too bad somebody got to it with a can of black spray paint, that alone will hurt it's value.. It would have shown a heck of a lot better with the correct bleeder valve master, and plated booster, and they should have just left the heat stove alone on the LH head/exhaust manifold.. would even have been a better idea to redo the original master, and leave it in "unrestored" status.

It might go for far less than 40K.. but I know there are a few Buick guys out there, who will scoop it up, should it remain inexpensive. So it won't be "given away"... I might guess about 32K or so for that car. Or about half of what it would have brought in 2005.

Someone could get a really good deal on that low mile car.

Buyer pays 10% on top of his bid plus they have I believe city, county and state sales taxes. Then you have you registration, travel and transport expenses.

It is a very nice original car. Todd said it was the factory paint according to the original owner. One panel looked like it might have been repainted. Also looked like it had some minor touch ups. I have my hands full with my convertible so I was concerned about getting too interested.

    Thanks, Bob.

The car before the Buick was a Plymouth Roadrunner High Wing Hemi - maybe a 68 - went for $285,000 - so there's SOME MONEY floating around out there.
The California real estate mini-moguls have all tanked - the highly leveraged ones where they used to take a $300k house, watch it appreciate to $600k - sell it (or a row of 'em) then on the way to buy three rows of houses in Albuquerque, they'd stop at B-J and buy 5 cars. With the leftover money, they'd buy a few kilos of coke and head back to CA to start making money all over again.
When I lived in Albuquerque they ruined the real estate market there, sdrove the locals into apartments.

19K for an 87 GN with 23K miles. Boy the seller should never have put it in there. GN s never seem to do well there.

Watching the BJ Auction in Scottsdale for the past 2 hours. It appears that prices are still down. A couple of Buicks went cheap. A 63 Riv and a 87 GN.
Wish I was there with a fist full of $$. Some good deals to be had.
