No sputter or backfire. Just won't pull between 4 and 5 grand and it stops "pulling" and just revs and kinda lays over.

NOT like running out of gas, though. I've had that and it literally falls over and you feel like the brakes are on. This is just a failure to "pull".

    Yards,
I know the MSD goes to the battery but I want to rule out the ignition switch, fuse box and car wiring. Keep the MSD hooked up the way you do but disconnect your 12 volt ignition circuit and just run a jumper to the battery. Also pull the 8000 chip out for the hell of it.

I'd be much happier if I threw a rod or had a catastrophic failure. That way you KNOW the answer. Chasing my tail is like water torture.

Ah. I have a toggle switch I can use to run direct battery to the MSD and have a switch to turn it on and off.

OK. I'll do that tomorrow, Simple to do.

I am using the original "pink coil wire" (well, not the ORIGINAL one. I've rewired my harness) as the on/off trigger as per MSD's suggestion - you need a "switched" source to activate the box. Once I eliminate that I'll have nothing but MSD wiring and hot wire going to the box and coil.

Definatly sounds to me like it is a converter or transmission problem. Pull the dipstick, and smell the fluid. Look for pieces on it. You might could pull the pan, and I bet that you will find a lot of clutch material in it.

It did it with a different trans and a different converter.

A fellow Buick owner near me had same issue, run hard up to 5grand and fall on its face. After changing fuel pumps, cams, coils, and carbs around, it was a trans issue. I cant remember exactly what the problem was, but it was in the transmission....

After the first run when everything is fine how does the engine idle after the next few runs when the problem exists. Is the idle RPM at a higher rate after a run?

    Nope. Runs the same.

Duely noted. I'll haul the spare trans out of storage and make sure it is ready should I need it.

I had an issue once where a rubber fuel line would get soft when hot and suck closed or almost.......
First pass or two of the day it would rev fine. Was sure it was valve springs but it wasn't. Just a thought..........

I read lots about the new valve springs, but didn't see where anyone mentioned correct installed height? I figure you're open to long-shots at this point.

Another long shot. My car ran a lot better after I rewired it. Are you losing voltage to the ignition system as the car warms?

You forgot that we both drove through it & will pick back up to 5500 rpm.

Yards will try Johns wire Idea, that will rule out the factory wiring. If no result we are pulling it & taking to the Dyno . I dont Have anymore parts to lend you :spank:

Hey Yards- Just a word of encouragement. We'll get you fixed up buddy come hell or high water. It is going to be something that was quickly overlooked but with all of these ideas at least you wont be standing there scratching your head, the solution is there - some where. Hang in there Bud.:TU:

Every inch of line has been replaced with nice, stiff, Push-Lok line.

Valve heights were dead-on when the heads and engine were done about 10,000 miles ago.
