I've been racing my Big Block Buick, in my '65 Skylark Convertible, for over 20 years....I've been "loyal"to the BBB, i've built and / or KILLED or sold 13 BBB's in that time frame... Progressed from running 16 second 1/4 miles, to Class racing X275 running Mid 5's in the 1/8th mile... Current "bullet" is a Tomahawk 475ci BBB, made 830 hp on the dyno, and has 2 stages of Nitrous.....Guess what "I'm DONE"!!! I break with thee, I break with thee, and throw dog poop on their shoes!!! I quit this BI#$H!!! Making some changes, check the FOR SALE section...So what's in store for Bad Buick 3.0???? Guess we'll see........... Gary G.
20 years in it. 5 seconds. Put this man in the Buick hall a fame.. your leaving with grace. What made you want to stop and tell us really what you might build or do next. Are you selling the 65 or just the go fast parts?
I am "quitting" something in my Buick racing "program", something that I've been "addicted to" for over 20 years.......NITROUS!!! I have had nitrous as a power adder on my BBB for over 20 years, it has been very good, affordable way to make more power, but I NEED MORE... My current combination has hit a wall running nitrous, 500 shot on one or 2 of the kits, doesn't give any more power/ ET, over a single 300-350 shot. I have 2 Induction Solutions nitrous units, an NX plate, and a ProRace Fogger... I've been fighting issues on this nitrous combination since day 1, 5+years, and its determined that my cam is the issue.. In my 475ci Tomahawk bullet, I have the 54mm solid roller cam, ground on a 114 lobe center, Ford, Mopar, and Chevys (air pumps) running 500 + of nitrous, need a cam with a 116 + lobe center.. So I decided to just get a new cam, HA HA, that turned into a giant cluster Fck!! I learned that the 54mm roller cores, cannot be ground where i need to work.... And there aren't any cores available!!!!! I know guys out there are way worse off because they've purchased Tomahawk blocks, and can't even get a cam to finish their build. And I have one, but need "better",I've been told I could have a "special tool steel" cam custom made, can you say EXPENSIVE!!! Well over the $1200 entry level 54mm.... So after talking to Scott Brown and Bobb Makley, I've decided, "I'm DONE after 20 years"!!! No more nitrous, I'm going BOOSTED.. I just can't see doing the Custom cam deal to "hopefully" run faster on 500+ of nitrous, I'm struggling to make 1300hp, running 5.60 on 1 unit. Class racing X275 in the 32 car field, top cars run 4.60-4.40, I'm usually #31 or 32 qualifier, racing a 4.50 car, he can spin, lift, whatever, TWICE, and drive around my 5.60 like i'm standing still...Going Boosted, 4.70's sounds "doable", and there, that same 4.50 car, screws up 1 time, He's DONE and I move on!!! So I'm taking that $1200+ money and doing something that hasn't been done yet....I'm building a crank driven procharged combination, should be 2000 horsepower, at max effort...I'm sure I'll have my "challenges", seems that I always do, maintaining my BUICK Loyality/Stupidity... I've been told by MANY fast class racers, and famous engine builders to "ditch that Buick platform" run an LSX, but my come back is this, "how do you know that the Tomahawk Big Block Buick isn't as good a platform as the LSX, NOBODY is out there doing it... I'm ready to try... Another EXPENSIVE endeavor, but hoping for the best... The procharger has been purchased, and the CUTTING has begun!!!!!!! If ya need a couple good nitrous Units, or nitrous related parts, check out the Classified... I just can't sell my Buick, it has become my "identity" over the years..... Gary G.
I always said if I went away from my Naturally Aspirated combo I would like a ProCharger. I love the way they sound coming out of the burnout. Best of luck! Glad to see it wasn't the car going up for sale.
Talk to Ken Betts, he has already covered that ground on the crank drive.. I have his crank driven F3R in the shop here.. JW
I have talked to Ken, and had him send me pics of the crank drive he had the Supercharger Store build... F1x-12R. x275 class legal.
Will still use the MOPAR super victor, not sure if I convert my dominator to Alcohol blow thru ( I've heard there can be "issues"), or save more cash to go fuel injected.....
Is there a reason you wouldn't look to go stand alone and fuel injection? Lots of upside including logging, traction control, and controlling the spark to name a few.
I've several friends with fast blow thrus,..they all ended up going FI,...time you go dual needle and seat and all that Jazz it gets crazy,..the Holley Dominator EFI gives you 32 inputs,..i have contact info for fella that gets ridiculous pricing on the Holley EFI stuff,..he was going to save me a grand vs mailorder if you wanna be competitive you'll need data,..and feedback that a carb just cant provide
It's all EXPENSIVE...... I know data is key.... I know what I'd like to do, but budget / wallet will actually dictate whats gonna happen...I'm not "new" at this racing stuff, but new at Boost....I do have friends to figure it out as I go....
Ask your friends. I bet being able to see what is happening with a wideband, fuel pressure and other things as the log replays would help tune it for the next run.
