I tell myself all the time to double check torque specs. And I was rushing and thought I knew it, and that was all she wrote.

You ever just feel instantly sick to your stomach when you mess something up?

Great news, stud spun right out with a ton of effort, but no drilling. I have no more bolts though, so now I'm still stuck.

Also for 430 rocker shafts it's 30 foot lbs

I had a torque wrench that sometimes decided not to click....pretty scary when torquing aluminum heads....went right into trash...but later removed to use as ratchet and breaker bar ONLY

What happened to the other 430? Should be lots of extras?

Holy fack batman, thanks to Ken's 5/16ths 9.325 pushrods, this nasty 430 turns to 5800 and keeps pulling!!!!!!!!! WHAT?!

    Yeah that's not a typo. That's a 5, not a 4.

I might be a special case, here to prove it now has been done before:

    67 430 rockers
    70-later pushrods**** 9.325
    70-later lifters (5/16 cup)
    Steel shim .020 headgaskets
Using both through-head and through-pushrod oiling.

I can't wait to tune it, and holy moly it pulls like a train

Quick reminder: this engine is in a 4500 lb Riviera

I took it for a city block length yesterday, I bet now I could swing two.

By the way, Happy New Year to all, and what a way to end the year! I suppose the story of this build ends here, and I thank everybody again. Maybe I'll throw the occasional upgrade or speed talk here, but this is just about all she wrote.

    Thanks,
    John

Way to go! In a couple of weeks you'll be wondering when the track is opening. Be prepared: Drag Radials may be in your future so start saving or checking Craigslist for some good used. 275 60-15's would be great and are pretty common. The next thread you start can be about your adventures getting into the 13's.

I'd add an * after the 70-later pushrods just in case in the future somebody misses the first line about the non-stock length 9.250" pushrods.

It is noticeably shorter than a factory length pushrod which is interesting considering no block/head milling, deeper 3/8" cup rockers, non-stock camshaft, and .040" composition(I'm assuming) head gaskets. All that usually adds up to close to stock length pushrods or the factory had crazy too much preload.

Just a couple of follow ups. The timing chain cover you used with the larger inlet passageway is from a '71 and up engine. That was a good upgrade from the factory small passage way cover even without using the larger pickup. Timing marks are even better. The '71 and later block's oil pickup passageway was opened up to 5/8" from the factory to go with the timing cover and the larger 5/8" oil pickup.(I believe that only '70 Stage 1 engines also had the upgraded oiling system.) I'm assuming your hot oil pressure is looking good.

Did you ever actually get some steel shim head gaskets?

Yeah let me try that again:

    67 430 rockers
    70-later lifters (5/16th cup)
    70-later pushrods 9.325
    Steel shim .020 headgaskets
