have you thought about using SBC headers for that same year chevelle? just cut off the chebby flange and replace with a SBB flange.... i would think they'd fit that way...:Do No:

yep . contimplated that - but this motor is pretty much a stock rebuild with a TA212 cam , lifters , springs , cam brg's and some quick port matching and minor head work and i've already spent wwwaaayyyyy too much time thinking and changing plans and tinkering - time to start puttin' parts back on the car . the main problem with using chebbie headers and sbb flanges is the angle of the exhaust ports , the chevy is more of a straight up motor while the sbb heads lay over at a steeper angle similar to a pontiac so i think it would also involve changing the angle of all of the header tubes . probably less work adapting TA or Poston 350 headers maybe , the right side header is very close to being ok . the chevy is close to the original 300 v8 / v6 motor angle , lots of side room - the 350 has way less room near frame and k-frame . sean i think stated someone was working on headers for this combo . del
edit-in the pic of right side of motor you'll see no lower htr hose going into firewall , points right at rear of valve cover , after a couple things finally realized the "S" shaped bypass hose from the front was just what was needed , brought it right up and under the other hose , just connected with a small section of 1/2 inch copper pipe and dbl clamped it . don't know if anyone else has used that before . del

I actually used a 90deg plumbing fitting on my 64 to clear the valve cover and it works great as well

    Ken

the car looks great I highly modified my hooker headers to get them to fit!! the drivers side was a real night mare i had to flatten the one tube almost in half but it will still flow about the same just not as pretty, you can't see it anyway. I will have them in the car this spring I just have to decise what 65 I am going to put them in my wagon or my HT both are 350's and both have air when i am done I will post pictures on this post

quick pic of the heater hose thing . please excuse the white wire ties . jeez - you'd think i would have at least been able to find some black ones layin' around . does anyone make "black" hose clamps ? maybe i have some of those oval black metal hose connectors layin' around . del ( edit : found some black ties - mucho better . i'll sleep better tonight . )

could you send me a picture of the frame mounts for the engine? do you have any pictures of those mounts before you put in the engine?

I'm looking at a '65 special without an engine or trans and can't tell if it was a SB or nail

    thanks,

if it was an all "oem" special it was not a nailhead (401-425 motor) unless something was changed . my car was originally a v6 "three on the tree" car . i used the original v6 frame mounts and '65 300v8 motor mounts - so far so good , everything has been lining up fine . i think the block / frame mount pad area / bellhousing distance is the same for the v6-300v8-350v8's its just that the v8's block is one cylinder longer ahead of the motor mount area . no i don't think i have any pics of the motor mounts by themselves , but the first bunch of pics may help if ya look close - ? del ( edit : pic#4 ( right ) and pic#12 ( left ) may be best views )

well the floor has a hole in it and it has pedals for a manual, but there's no shifter "hump" and the steering column looks like it's not stock.. the guy said that the guy he bought it from REALLY wanted the engine and trans... so i figure this was a "three on the tree" car that was converted to floor shift 4-spd and some kind of engine, but what, I have no idea:Do No:

also has BIG front swaybar, and disk brakes up front.. so it was somebody's project car

the only way it could have been a nailhead car was if it was a "GS" which would mean it had a boxed frame like the convertibles and the frame mounts would have been funky lookin' - would have bolted to the k-frame and then jutted forward to meet the motor mount location of the nailhead . my car was a cheapo basic two door post so it had the v6 3-speed but i can remember seeing quite a few small v8's with standard trans also . it may have had buckets with no console ? does the hole in the floor look factory or a little rougher cut ? i'm sure someone here can give you the info with the vin # . i thought about a big motor but with the regular frame the 350 choice seemed to have a little more "balance" to it . del

i've been "weighing" the balance issue myself... I LOVE the look and the "prestiege" of the nailhead, but i also love the lightweight of the 350...

what about a twin turbo'd bored and stroked aluminum rover engine?:Brow:

    with a keisler 5 spd behind it:Brow:

they do made valve covers for the rover that are vertical like a nailhead correct?

looking at my pictures and going by your description, i think the motor mounts were for a small v8 or v6... I'm going to copy the vin plate tomorrow and decode it.. and take a better look at everything.

Those motor mounts look the same as the mounts in my 65 special V6. I was told that those frame mounts will work for the 350.

yep,at least on my car (65 special) it seems ok,used the oem v6 frame mounts and '65 300v8 motor mounts.a set of 300v8 frame mounts may be better if they were a little more heavy duty and then maybe use some energy suspension motor mounts (if available) for a little more "insurance".don't know if thats the case.could maybe brace up the v6 mounts with some small gussets and plates welded in carefully if needed.a left front engine "cable to frame" tie down is always a good idea.del
