man , that was way toooo complicated for an old dog , be ok once i get the camera settings and computer steps figured out a little better and more often . anyway , that combo is 68-69 350 in 65 special , muncie m21 , lakewood bellhousing . used 65 300 v8 motor mounts and stock v6 frame mounts . going down shortly to pick up energy suspension rear tranny mount to take the place of the piece of 2x4 to mock it up . engine , bellhsg , trans and various mounting points and possible contact areas all look ok so far - except for headers . right header is pretty close to fitting ok , but left header has miles of problems . the #3 tube runs right into the back of the k-frame and the one left/front eng pic shows the distance needed to hook up header . i'm gonna use oem exh manifolds first but wanted to see how these looked . i bought them used from a board member and am not sure of the make . i think there is room to move the engine back 1" - 2" and possibly remove the problem . ? . the other area of concern is the super shifter location , there's gonna be some floorboard work needed for that for sure . a few times on here i have noticed people asking about this combo and i thought maybe these pics would be good practice for me and also be useful to someone else . let me know if there are any questions . or any ideas for me to use would be appreciated . hope the pics came out ok . used a sony w80 in case you were wondering . del

Del, I have a few ideas about the header issues on the 64-67 cars and will let you know if things work out and make the 350 into 64-67 cars MUCH better by being able to BOLT in headers without issues!

E-mail me as many pics as you can so i can see where the issues are exactly...

sean : as far as new header pics are concerned - they are already off and hangin' on the wall and gettin' ready to put the heads and stock manifolds on and do a quick dbl check . of the pics posted now - pic #1 , #2 , #7 , #13 , #14 address the right side issues . the last tube on that side touches the frame rail at the "bend" enough so that you can't quite line up the trans mount holes . 1/2 - 3/4 inch x maybe 3 inch length ? there is a yellow line in one of the pics of the approx contact area . it also comes very close to the bellhsg right next to the starter but a stock bellhsg may not have that issue . pic #3 , #10 , #11 , #15 cover the left side . to tell you the truth , when i saw the probably 1 inch interference at least where the #3 exhaust tube contacts the k-frame i knew they were not gonna fit as is and lifted the engine back up and removed them after taking a few pics to give me an idea . that side did look like it may clear the clutch stuff , but was not real sure on the steering column/control arm situation and probably would have to re-route the brake lines or they may cook a little . could not really tell too well without the header up closer to being in position . my thinking ( quickly ) was that an approx 1-2 inch engine set back could be done maybe with the use of hydraulic clutch linkage and and rearranging of the motor mounts and gas linkage and maybe a little floorboard work . of course that would need to be a more serious car - but - a 1 or 2 inch setback would not be really noticeabe and give a few pounds more of setback weight . not sure about the rear of the heads as far as clearance with the firewall and heater box areas . probably have to have bucket seats with a manual trans . my shifter as-is seems to be lookin' pretty close to the bench and may not fit anyway . the person that i bought those from said they came out of a 65 350 car but the mount situation must have been dif . ? . hope this expaination helps a little . del

Thanks Del, I think we can find an easier solution without moving the engine. I'll get back to you on this....

thats not the first time i've entertained the thought of moving an engine back . must be "gasser envy" . maybe i just hate the thought of tweaking things to make 'em fit . performance wise they probably spend alot of time on flow etc and anytime ya' change anything - who knows . with an automatic the room on the left side would be better without the clutch linkage obviously and then the moving of the #1-#3-#5 tubes back would be easier i guess . maybe moving the #1 tube up and over like some of the mopar headers ? fenderwell headers !!! ( more gasser envy ) anyway - sure , let me know if something comes up ( girdle also ) . thanks . del

I'm doing a similar build. 65 Special with SBB 350 with a TH350 trans. I have headers for the engine for the later Skylark and am going to be looking at how to make it fit. Sean if you have any luck, I am interested. I will post progress as it happens. I'm 6 weeks or so from putting the engine in the chassis.

Love that first picture (upper left hand corner).
Nice cleaned up engine bay, nice freshly rebuilt engine with cool rockers and nice new paint job....

....old rusty worn out headers and exhaust pipe with some big dents for good measure.

    LOL! That was classic! :TU:

Sorry. Don't mean to offend. Looks like you're doing some class "A" work.
Very nice job, but those headers gave me a good chuckle.

    Thanks for posting the pics.

just like e-bay,never trust the pic's 100%.so probably class"B".class"A" would be some nice tubular control arms and rollers.no offense taken. picked the headers up here from someone, not much $$,so i figured it would be a good cheap way to check the fit for sure.they are really pretty solid so if they fit then i was gonna fix the dings and blast and paint 'em.wall art for now.may use later or resell?thanks for the look.del

What were those headers again I have modified my hooker headers to fit ( and they do fit my 64 !!!! ) but I would not recomend that for anyone :) move the brake line as well it looks mighty close :TU:

Too bad that wasn't an SBC.
I've got a brand-new set of AK5000's for X-body/F-body, 68-80, still in the box, I got from Super Shops in '88.

in a kind of related "fyi" i just posted at "u shift em" with some pics of shifter "box" i'm probably gonna use . just cardboard and tape and a little paint for now but looks usable . bench seat clearance is nil with the seat all the way back , for me ok but if you are short in stature maybe not . pics did not come out as clear - ? - will have to check that out . camera set the same ? del

a couple "light at the end of the tunnel" pics . next up is radiator support and radiator in temporary , "start up" electronics and fuel lines etc to carb . then tighten down rockers , pre oil and try it . maybe i'll put the exhaust and mufflers on so i can hear a little - just in case . del ( couple pics are distorted ? #3 looks ok ? you get the idea anyway )
